Question Did I make a huge mistake!

Hi! I'm still a final year IMG so I wanted to do electives. After MUCH research and 100s of emails sent, the only option I had left for a clinical elective was a paid agency like the one listed in the poll on this website. I had a HORRIBLE experience with American Medical Opportunities (AMOworldwide), it was unorganized, inefficient and very very irregular.

So I finally chose Americlerkships (because of the high poll numbers)
Now I've made a $5k investment by signing up for 2 months of electives. I'm FREAKING OUT because I've read multiple threads like this and I just want to make sure that it was worth it. Did I make a mistake?? Is the legality of all this really a thing?? Do program directors really not accept students based on this??

I have a THG core gaurantee but both of the descriptions read as more clinical outpatient work than hospital work. One of the hospitals is affiliated with an osteopathic school. I asked them to change it and they gave me another DO affiliated school when I'm more interested in MD programs. So I want to know whether I just made a huge mistake and this kind of paid elective/'externship' (the badge reads 'medical volunteer'?!) is not applicable as USCE.

One of the options of attendings are at Swedish Covenant and the other is Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital. Anyone recommend which one is better? Remember both are more outpatient clinics.

Default It's all good

Hi abstudyin,

I know your anxiety all too well - I signed up with Americlerkships earlier this year and wondered if I'd made a huge mistake. I've just finished three months of clerkships and have to say that the experience was great! I didn't know much about my attendings to start with either (Americlerkships give details the week before), but all three were really keen to teach and have me demonstrate whatever skills I have. Ultimately, I got that much needed US experience and LORs out of it. Having to pay does suck, but it was money well spent in my humble opinion.

I think that residency directors just want to see that us IMGs have integrated into the US health system. The THG core thing will be (most likely) outpatient work, but I took initiative and was allowed to take full histories and non-invasive physicals on most patients. This was reflected in my LORs, which is (I hope) what program directors want to see.

Hope that helps, and best of luck. Just take the attitude that you make your own destiny and really go for it in those clinical rotations!

Bob, how does 'thg' then translate to mostly outpatient? That's absurd!! How is that not illegal to advertise it as 'teaching hospital guarantee' and then stick you in an outpatient clinic?

And frankly, you sound like an americlerkship PR rep.

Anyone else other than Bob-the-bot out there who can answer my questions 😔

Since you are still a medical student why don't you apply for electives at colleges with residency programs you are interested in applying to? I feel that would be the best alternative.

Since you are an IMG, do you have a year of internship following medical school? Because I believe that even during your internship period you are still considered a student because you have not graduated yet. In other words, you do not need to rush because you do have some time.

P.S. A lot of residency programs which I have looked at have mentioned that observerships and externships are not considered as 'USCE.' Instead they want clerkships, which is what you can get as a medical student.

I am currently affiliated with americlerkship. I would say thay yr ride isnt gonna be smooth. n about the legality of expi, nobody knws it. everyone is doing it as a last option.

as u r still a student, I would stronglly advise u to go directly by university.

n let me tell u that THG guaranty is <50%. for me currently even less than that. so yeh u will get expi bt will u get match or not, that u have to find by yrself in match.
