Listening Does Paid Externship Really Help

I am IMG; 1985, I passed all USMLE Steps within 7 years: 1 Step 186 - first attempt, 2 Step CK 185 - first attempt, 2 CS - third attempt, 3 Step - second attempt. Last Step I passed in August 2013. Do I have any chance to find a residency? I had a huge clinical experience in my country but, unfortunately, don't have it in the USA, only observeship. And will paid externship help me if I get it? I can't imagine myself without medicine!

Default Research !!

Ratehr,, Why don't you try for some good research and get some publications under your name !!! It would definately boost your CV and compensate for your low USMLE scores !!

Star How and where can I get any researh?

How and where can I get any research? I tried to find it but couldn't. Besides of it I have not only low scores but I am old IMG. I thought that paid externship helps in my situation, is not it? Do you know some programs which are friendly for old IMG?

Honestly, I dont know how you can get to a residency.Your case is only personal contacts.Im myself grad 1999 and have only massive rejections and when you call them , they tell you "we prefer no older than 5-7 years after graduation".May be, PhD or MS will help, Ive heard with such a degree you can tried pathology, they dont care about YOG....

Star And?

So, you think the paid externship will not help? Or some kind of research?

I'm still applying myself so take my advice with a grain of salt.
In your case, it's highly unlikely that paid externship will work, if that's the only thing that you want to do. I'm going to be blunt and honest here. You have multiple red flags in your application, YOG, failed CS attempts, low scores.

First, what I would like to say is to reconsider your choice to pursue residency in USA. Is this really what you want? Consult with your family, consider pathway in your home country etc.

If you are determined and really sure that this is what you want, understand that your pathway is rough and resource-consuming (money, time etc). Having practiced for that long you should have made several connections in medical world. Try to utilize these connections, to connect you with any physicians in US. Work with them, impress them, if they like you, they might want you for their program despite the red flags. Then, you might also want to boost your chance with USCE and also research.

Star Thank you!

I understood, the first thing is connection... I am shocked... And what do you think about Pathology? Do I have chance there? ( I was a surgeon in my country)

Oh I forgot, that's the other thing. Pursue PhD in that field while publishing papers. Of course PhD from US university, hence you will need to sit for GRE exam. That might be essential for Pathology.

Star ?

So, I can't get a pathology residency without GRE exam? I've never heard about this exam. Does any Pathology residency require to get PhD before? and PhD exactly in pathology field? Or maybe I didn't understand something?

No externship or USCE will do anything good, I have 5 years of USCE, publication and now what? absolutely nothing. They dont care, they keep pointing to my YOG I can not change!
PhD or MS is not mandatory to get to pathology residency.I just said, it would be easier

Certainly you can improve your cv with US clinical experience and/or research. there is no difference between observership/extenrships , paid/free.
Programs directors value your experience, and they know it Is not easy to get being an IMG

Star I hope!

It sounds hopefully! Do you think I can find some residency after externship? For example, pathology or psychiatry? where is some friendly program?...
