Help cover letter? letter of intent? statement of purpose?

hello,
i have come across these terms repeatedly while going through applications for electives. one of my friends told me that the letter of intent is the same as the statement of purpose. when i checked online, SOP seems to be an essay kinda thing, while the letter of intent seems to be an actual letter. are these two the same?? i am familiar with an SOP as i have submitted them in my college, but have no idea about the letter of intent. how long should they be?
Cover letter on the other hand seems to be the same as the letter of intent plus the documents enclosed inside. hope i am right.
it would be helpful if someone could throw light on what is exactly expected of us.. kindly help

Statement of purpose and letter of intent are almost the same. I took me some time to figure this out. You have to write an essay beginning with what inspired you to become a doctor, why are you particularly inclined towards the subject you are applying for, why U.S., why that school? Write about your achievements, and please don't try to sound modest. It doesn't work( Include your PMT and other ranks, mention workshops, seminars, your scores, how you ranked, explain the projects you have done, how it helped you or the community, any volunteer work). The key is, try and sound believable and genuine. Write it yourself or else it'll end up looking impersonal. Take your time and ask a friend to proof read.

I wrote one to Weill Cornell following the above guidelines and was approved.
Hope it helps.

I applied 4 months prior to the elective date. At Cornell things don't work on a first come basis but its still advisable to apply as early as possible. Just shows that you are responsible. Check out the website, they have everything there. Make sure that while filling the application you mention as many choices as possible. print out another table and add as many elective choices you want but before that speak with someone from the office of global health about it.
Good luck!

You can write an e mail to the elective coordinator asking about the module dates. Her address is there on the website.

Wink email or calculate

hello,
as Dr.rishika pointed out, i was planning to write to them regarding the actual dates. but if u have the patience u can calculate the dats urself by looking at the pattern..its not that hard. basically harvard and weil cornell start on the same day.. but weil cornell ends on a sat while harvard ends on a monday. so its not really much of a problem. all the best

i already did. no reply. been waiting.

1. also, in the description of electives, there is a general module given.. minus the year. should i follow this?
for example-
https://s018.med.cornell.edu:8443/el...jsp?course=314

2. on what basis should i chose the hospital in the electives? there is this Doha one, Houston, memorial center, weill cornell medical center, weill cornell university..etc.

Unhappy WC advice !

Hello I am applying to Weill Cornell myself for March 2014. The person at Global Health office told me its okay to apply even with 5 months left if I apply in due time. Ive given them 8 options. Please tell me what are the odds of getting into Cornell as this is my last resort and I ve becoming hopeless- applied to so many places, nothing came through until this reply to an email I sent to Cornell.

Im composing my CV and statement of intent at the moment. Just wanted to know if 8 slots gives me a chance of selection? Any help you can give will be appreciated! Also, how was your experience at WC? PM if possible.

Thank you !

Hey
What e-mail did you use? Globalhealthelectives or Ms.Reeder's?
I have tried calling them several times over the past 3 weeks without any response.

ANOTHER QUERY
For SOP, do I scan and send the document or do I simply send the MS word document?

Thanks in advance.

Smile Hey guys, hope this helps!

For EaglesEye & Nomi:

I am sending my documents on the globalhealth email .. I emailed them prior to applying. Emailed Dianne Young infact and she has replied to my queries. I am sending my documents as I type and they do not tell you about your application status by a minimum two months before your elective start date. Iam scanning some documents that needed signing and sending soft copies of others such as malpractice policy, CV etc

Ive applied for March so I am expecting to hear from them by end of December. Nonetheless I will contact them after I submit my documents to inquire about my money transfer status and a while later as I need to book my airline tickets in advance.

Its a proper institution, I doubt they would be negligent in replying or responding so just stay put, have patience, God willing they will reply and accept you (and me as well )

As for the Statment of Intent/ Purpose, since it is supposed to be an essay, it does not need counter-signing by yourself and thus you can send a simple soft copy.

Good luck with the Cornell Elective quest.. I hope we all get thru Insha Allah.

Cheers !!
