Hi Spidey,

I don't believe Harvard routinely send out confirmation of the documents being received. I emailed them to confirm they had received mine so perhaps you could do that. They usually send out acceptance letters around 6 weeks before, on a Friday. So I would estimate they'll let you know of acceptance on Jan 24th, but don't quote me on it!

Default Malpractice insurance and health insurance

1) I would like to ask whether You could recommend any insurance company that purchase malpractice insurance to international students. What is the approximate price for such an insurance?
2) Is foreign travel insurance policy equivalent for health insurance?

Hello! Before that interview, I prepared it for a whole day. I even prepared a case for presentation. But all my questions are somewhat "yes or no" types about my application information and what we do in our own school in terms of English environment. It is like doing a questionnaire. I guess they just want to know that you can survive in the US and make sure that you are qualified. Do not worry too much.
But I do not make sure everybody's interview is the same. So, you had better prepare a little.

Hello, hope u would help me. Desperately in need of it

I completed my Mbbs in March 2013 & now doing my internship. I'm trying to apply for a clerkship at HMS for 1 month. Please help me with the following doubts of mine regd the application process.

1) in the HMS immunization certificate, should we fill the blanks with the date of immunization or the date of report or the antibody titre value?

2) what should we submit for the personal health & malpractice insurance?

3) is a single report stating mantoux negative enough or 2 reports compulsory?

4) I have a childhood BCG vaccination history. Should I send my chest x ray & it's reporting?

5) in the application they ask us if we are done with our step 1. And if "NO", to give a reason or explanation. Can some please suggest me some valid & decent reasons.

Please clarify. Thank you in advance

Your feedback would be of great help...

Haha, I think you are just very anxious about application, is this a problem to you? Actually, they have all their information on their website which you had better first read them through.
For Question 2, when you finish shopping your insurance, you could print your confirmation of your insurance, that's all.
For 5, if you are not Canadian or US student, you are not required to offer USMLE transcript at all.

Default July HMS Clerkship

Hey everybody!

I'm having my July HMS Clerkship now at Children's hospital. It's Pediatric pathology. And I'm so disappointed. Nobody knew I was coming. Nobody knows about the course description. I just was sitting at a desk reading books which I can do at home! So I've been trying my best to learn something. I'm going to other departments. I've been talking to many people and I hope my next 2 weeks will be more meaningful!

It's such a disappointment!! Had anybody experienced something familiar?

hi. i am sorry for you. just want you to know that people working there are too buisy. its really hard to find someone exited about new students coming to clinic. i felt the same way when i arrived first but in time you start thinking of yea they are right about it, because you are just 1 month there and you want something to get from them..they dont need you there. my suggestions is to talk with residents (not chief and not 1st year because both of them are too buisy and nervous). just walk with them everywhere they go, ask them to do something. in our departmen till i asked to take history of patients at emergency room they never told me to go and take some history. if you want to do something just ask them and they are good people they ll let you do it. ask if they have any research goin on, if yes ask more about that, show them that you are interested in. good luck

Help Dilemma-internship extension in india for electives and ecfmg application!!

I am in desperate need of some help. Here is an insight to my situation.

I am an undergraduate from india and i am in the final year (5th yr.) i.e the internship year of my course. I have already done 1 month of clinical electives at harvard in january this year. I have completed my internship somewhere in the first week of july. I havent applied for completion certificate (i.e diploma) yet. And so technically i am still an undergraduate.

My plan is to give step 1 in november this year and then apply for electives again with step 1 score in december. I wish to file for completion (diploma/final degree) after i have sent my application for electives.

Now, my question is suppose i get acceptance from xyz univ. and go to do electives in the month of june next year. And i get a LOR from them stating i was with them during the month of june 2015. What if during my residency interview the P.D. asks- "How come you managed to do electives during the month of june when you became a graduate in december 2014?"
Will that really be a problem if i do that? Should i delay applying for diploma after i finish my electives?

And one last question. A week back i registered with ecfmg for taking a 3 month slot for step 1. In that i have registered myself as a graduate. The reason for this was - it was mentioned in their website that all those who have completed their graduation but are still in the process of acquiring their diploma should register themselves as graduates. So i did that.

Now suppose while applying for matching i upload a LOR on ECFMG website dated as june 2015. But as already mentioned i have registered myself as a graduate and entered the date of graduation as july 2014. Will ECFMG see this as an irregular behavior and book me for this discrepancy. Please advise.

I'd like to say that this was one of the best rotations I've ever had. It got better after I talked to them and everything went well! I got to do many things in the department!

Default Application fee

hey guys,

how did you all pay the application fee?

it says the following two options:

a)U.S. check in U.S. dollars drawn on a bank on U.S. soil(if you do not have a U.S. account, a family member or friend living in the U.S. can issue the check on your behalf. Please send your documentation to the person providing the payment, have them attach the check, and send everything together in one packet).
b)American Express Travelerís Checks which must be signed before submitting.

I dont have a family member in the US. Is there any other way to do this?

hope someone will reply!

Hi, first I think that you should be a last year medical student in order to have the clerkship. I think they won't accept graduate students but you can ask.

Regarding the questions, here are the answers

1) in the HMS immunization certificate, should we fill the blanks with the date of immunization or the date of report or the antibody titre value? Yes, you should get the titers done and write the month and the year.

2) what should we submit for the personal health & malpractice insurance? You should make a travel health insurance which is made by a private insurance company. Regarding the malpractice insurance, you should buy one unless your school covers it. I had mine by Academicins.com

3) is a single report stating mantoux negative enough or 2 reports compulsory? You should check the check list on Harvard's website. Each year they change their requirements. For me, mantoux negative was enough. (2014)

4) I have a childhood BCG vaccination history. Should I send my chest x ray & it's reporting? Nope, negative mantoux test is enough (check the previous answer).

5) in the application they ask us if we are done with our step 1. And if "NO", to give a reason or explanation. Can some please suggest me some valid & decent reasons. If you're a foreign you don't need to give any reasons as I remember.

I hope I've helped

Early application is the key to securing a harvard elective. Apply to the less mainstream branches, by which I mean do not apply for Internal medicine. Pediatric sub-specialties are more easily available, at least to IMGs. I did do an elective in paediatric endocrinology. It was a good experience and lots to learn. Most of the people up at Children's are wonderful and welcoming to students.

I am facing exactly the same dilemma....did you proceed with the clerkship.....any helpful suggestions......please

Hello there!
I have been accepted for clerkship at Mass General for the month of march 2016. Anyone wants to share accommodation for March??
And it would be nice if you all can suggest a specific, safe and reliable rental/sublet which is 5 mins walking distance from MGH.

FYI - I am an female Indian med student, looking for a female roommate

PM me if interested!!

They typically reply 4 weeks prior. You can apply to any of the 8 hospitals. The clerkship options are available on the website.

I don't know if the school's prestige was the main deciding factor, but they all thought it was the bee's knees over there.

I applied for February, got confirmation for my app's reception, did the phone interview and everything, but haven't heard from them since. That was months ago.
Is Harvard's registrar on strike or something? I need to book flights and a place to stay, and it's going to be a pain in the ass if they don't let me know soon.

EDIT:
Alright, I asked a good fellow and he told me that he applied last year for a rotation starting on June 27th, and everyone who applied for that month got confirmation emails on June 2nd. He did call multiple times before that, and was told that there would be no way to know any more in advance what they were planning on doing with him.

So basically, we wait until we have 3 weeks left? Sheesh, talk about last-minute.

Whoever's lurking and was worrying about the same thing, I hope this helps you out.
Hi

What did you send in your application apart from the documents hms has mentioned on their website? Personal statement or any academic achievement or research publication? anything additional? I mean something that increased your chances of acceptance?
or is it just about the money?

And any advice on what i should do to get selected?
Also if you can suggest me some other universities for electives which do not require step 1 scores.

Thanks!
Please please reply. I'll be really grateful.

Hey! I was looking at the Harvard Elective Catalogue & could not understand the meaning of the following.

Open to Exclerks: US/Canadian

Open to Exclerks: Yes (may be restricted for international students)

Which one applies to a Non US IMG?
