Hello vansha!

You should look at their website:

http://www.hms.harvard.edu/registrar...ces/cdexc.html

A lot of people are accommodated, but the process is very specific.

Good luck!

Pediatrics - all specialties. Do not apply in Medicine as you won't get it there.

Strange. Up until last year, a bunch of people from my school all got into their desired specialty in Medicine there. I also remember that anyone who chose Cardiology got worked so hard that they actually gave up their plans to pursue a career in the States. Must have been hardcore as hell.

I honestly have no idea. Did any of those IM specialties include Cardio? That's the only one I bothered asking about...

Still, I hope they really do accommodate everyone. I'm in a rough spot myself for starting my application so late.

Star Clinical Rotation and LOR's

Hi i'm from Colombia and i'm in last year, i'll be applying for a 3-months rotation at harvard and there are a lot of chances to be accepted. My goal is to apply later for a residency taking the USMLE, but i know that at least 3 LOR's are required for a matching at a good hospital. My favorites specialties are Plastic Surgery and Urology, but i read that plastic sugery matching is pretty harder, so i was wondering how many time in a rotation is required to get 3 LOR's from a specialty? it would be enough 1 month, or to be sure i should choose the 3 months in urology. Can i take 1 month of plastic surgery, urology and internal medicine, and still get 3 LOR's from each specialty?

Thanks for your help.

Whups, late reply but here goes.
I don't know if the school's prestige was the main deciding factor, but they all thought it was the bee's knees over there.

I applied for February, got confirmation for my app's reception, did the phone interview and everything, but haven't heard from them since. That was months ago.
Is Harvard's registrar on strike or something? I need to book flights and a place to stay, and it's going to be a pain in the ass if they don't let me know soon.

EDIT:
Alright, I asked a good fellow and he told me that he applied last year for a rotation starting on June 27th, and everyone who applied for that month got confirmation emails on June 2nd. He did call multiple times before that, and was told that there would be no way to know any more in advance what they were planning on doing with him.

So basically, we wait until we have 3 weeks left? Sheesh, talk about last-minute.

Whoever's lurking and was worrying about the same thing, I hope this helps you out.

Thanks for the information...this policy of declaring acceptance so late is totally wrong and very troublesome for those who also have to apply for visa...3 weeks to get visa, purchase ticket and arrange accomodation is impossible...

I've applied for Harvard's Surgical rotations for Feb, March, and April and was wondering if anyone who has gone could give me some idea of what's to be expected. Any help is appreciated!

I've applied for on-campus housing at Vanderbilt Hall and am also looking for any sublets near the hospital. The HMS site under housing provides links to different off-campus accommodations. Hope this helps!

Most probably they should let you know by the first week of March is what I'd assume. Which field have you applied for?

Hi everyone,

I've applied for clerkship for the month of april 2013, but have yet to receive any reply, I understand that they usually reply only a month before the elective, so I'm not too worried about it.

I'd like to find out about lodging and if the vanderbilt hall lodging will be available. Also, will it be a better idea to rent an apartment outside the university instead?

Thanks.

hello all!
i am also planning to apply for clerkships for early 2014 and would greatly appreciate an International Med Student from INDIA who has already been/applied for the same about some minor details regarding the application process:

1. "Dean's letter Request a letter of support from your medical school Dean's office indicating the month and year of your anticipated graduation, that you are approved to participate in an elective at HMS, and that you will have completed satisfactorily the core clinical clerkship requirements of the home school - your Dean's letter should specify core clinical requirements. Letters should be original and printed on your school letterhead. HMS does not accept photocopies." What are our CORE clinical requirements and what are their respective duration???

2."Official Transcripts transcripts should be original and printed on either official transcript paper or school letterhead. HMS does not accept unofficial copies, web printouts (even with school stamp), or photocopies. The transcript should include all the courses/clerkships taken in medical school, including transferred courses, and the grades awarded. International transcripts are required to be translated into English." Does a transcript mean a SEPARATE document than the MARKSHEETS we get for each professional year? my college says they issue Transcripts only after graduation. is that a rule or is my college just playing difficult?

3. "Medical English proficiency international students must take a telephone interview in addition to submitting TOEFL scores. HMS requires a minimum score of 100 on the TOEFL exam. Students whose medical education is given in English are exempt from the telephone interivew & TOEFL as long as this is documented in your Dean's letter." of course we are taught in english. at least that's what they mention on paper. meaning i do NOT require toefl?

4."Online applications and supporting documentation cannot be submitted any earlier than SIX MONTHS. " that's new bc i did read someone applying in June and getting a call the next June!

i would be very grateful if someone helped me out here!! thank you in advance!!

Core clinical requirements mean - your final year postings.

2."Official Transcripts transcripts should be original and printed on either official transcript paper or school letterhead. HMS does not accept unofficial copies, web printouts (even with school stamp), or photocopies. Transcripts are given by university usually and they include the clock hours plus the marks received during MBBS. If your college isn't giving that then ask them to give you a transcript of clock hours only and you can submit your marksheets along with that to fulfill the requirement.

Toefl is a requirement for many elective programs and hence giving it won't cost you much. But if you only want to apply for Harvard then you can tell your dean to mention the medium of instruction in his recommendation letter.

4."Online applications and supporting documentation cannot be submitted any earlier than SIX MONTHS. " that's new bc i did read someone applying in June and getting a call the next June!

Harvard has a strict policy about this so you've read it wrong.

Default Doing Harvard exclerk in Aug 2013

Hi! is anyone going to harvard in August?

Whoever has gone through the rotations, is there any advice you can give? please. I don't have my step 1 completed, but I have been reviewing. I'm kind of nervous about starting.

Thanks

I was already accepted for this August. they dont require you to have a step 1. If you apply during the non-peak times, you'll have a good chance of getting in, depending on the rotations you pick. What's a pain is having all the lab work done, getting insurance, writing out checks..its money.

Default How many months before do they reply?

I have few questions...it would be great if someone answered them

I have sent my application for Jan-Feb electives. I tracked the courier and it has reached on 12th July. Do they send an email once the application packet is recieved.

I have filled out my paper application with pen, the deans office has also filled it with pen. will that be a problem?

After taking the toefl i never recieved the paper score report, all i have is the web page printout of my scores from toefl website. I have sent that only in all my applications in harvard, cornell and yale. will it hamper my prospects?

Also, is getting paeds elective easier than IM. I have applied only for paed subspecialities.

I just realised that while filling the CORI form in the application I may have written my bday in mm/dd/yy format whereas there it was asked it dd/mm/yy

Everywhere else in the form it was asked in mm/dd/yy so I made the mistake

Will that be a reason enough for rejection:sorry:

Hey everyone! I wanted to do an elective at Harvard. I filled the online application form a week back. I want a November elective. Is it a VERY late application? Should I give up hope completely? I called Harvard up to ask them whether this was very late and they said that the application deadline is 31st July and I got the application in a week before that.

Any help would be appreciated!

Also - two more things:

(1) Does the immunization form have to be filled by someone at your school or can it be any registered doctor?

(2) Do we need to get malpractice insurance before sending in the application or can we get it later after acceptance?

hi guys, thought i'd give a bit of an update on how my rotations were. first off, if you get a chance at brigham, take it. they are really helpful. my experience there was fantastic. unfortunately, my second rotation at mass gen was horrible. actually, horrible doesnt even begin to cover it. there was another girl with me, and the rotations we had been told we had been accepted for were suddenly pulled and we had to choose new ones on the spot. my new team intern never replied to my calls, texts, or pages for the four days i tried to contact her. when i took it up with hms, they said it was my fault for switching rotations all of a sudden. when i pointed out that they had pulled my original one, they could say nothing more than 'keep trying to contact your team'. i finally found my intern when i got a friendly nurse to page her for me. when i asked the intern why all of my attempts to reach her were never answer, the only reply i got was that she never checks her phone or pager, and that i should have emailed her. riight.

long story short::: both me and the other person with me were intl students, and all we ever heard or were told was how our countries hand out medical degrees like candy, and to not even think of trying to apply at harvard for a residency, because we just wouldnt cut it.

That's so harsh of them to belittle other universities, especially as a large proportion of their healthcare system is run by 'immigrants'!
spidey, Im applying for the april clerkship too and yes, going to send it off in october.

Just wondering, are people doing electives in America hoping to work there in the future or or just for the experience?

Default Doubts

I have a doubt, and it would be helpful if one can help me with it..

I'm in an international medical university that is a 5 year program + 1 year of internship.

I want to apply for a 3 month clerkship at Harvard after I finish my 5th year, but before I start my internship, so is that possible?

Also, I would like to know how to fill my application so that they know I'm in my final year?

To people accepted at Harvard recently: can you send a photocopy of your Dean's letter and other papers? Or an original copy is a must?
I hope to get replies from people who were accepted and have experience.

Default Receipt of documents

Hi,

Can you people tell me when did you get a mail of receipt of your documents after you sent them? How many months before your elective and how many months after sending the documents?

I sent my application in the 1st week of August for January, but haven't received any kind of email from them.

Thanks.

Hi i applied for jan, feb, march, 2014... They sent me an email that they will send out acceptances before december 6, 2013.

Will they send acceptance for all three months together or one by one?

Thanks in advance.

I sent my application in the 1st week of August for January, but haven't received any kind of email from them.

Thanks.
They said they will reply before dec 6, for the applications of january.

I have a question though:

Do they send three months acceptances together or one month at a time?

long story short::: both me and the other person with me were intl students, and all we ever heard or were told was how our countries hand out medical degrees like candy, and to not even think of trying to apply at harvard for a residency, because we just wouldnt cut it.
Hey i had applied too for jan - march.. should i expect three months acceptances or just one month at a time?
