Default A general idea about US Med School Curriculum

To be addmitted to a medical school in USA you need to finish premedical biological sciences requirements (they call it premed), most US students do that in biological sciences colleges and universities and they sometime also finish master degrees.

Then you have to pass the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) and then you go to med school.

The med school is like India composed of 4 years usually divided into two preclinical and two clinical years.

The preclinical years focus on basic medical sciences such as Pathology, Physiology, Anatomy, ...etc and by the end of it students require to pass USMLE Step 1.

The clinical years are usually done in the form of clinical rotations in teaching hospitals or community-based teaching clinics.

When you graduate from Medical School you can either be awarded MD or DO degrees.

Some med schools also allow other degrees if you like such as Masters in Healthcare Administration.

After those four years, graduates enter into residency programs. So unlike India, there's no mandatory internship year. That's why the first year of residency in USA is called (Internship).

i think to do clerkship you gotto apply to a US hospital before you graduate from your course !!

after graduation the only two options for fmgs are externship and observership

Externship : hands on experience

Observership - no touching the patient

Value wise : Clerkship/intership >Extership >observership

If I am wrong, someone do correct my assumptions

Hi

US [3rd+4th years] clerkship = Indian clinical rotations [in 3rd+4th years] ...although some places they start in second year itself

Hands on skills , physical examination, histroy taking......everything except prescribing meds or treatment

Same in both places...only thing i dont uderstand is why call it electives in 4th year

US intership [1st year residency] = indian final year intership

So basically Indian FMGS will have to redo intership when joining residency !
