I really need to get into a clerkship program in 4 months... I haven't taken the USMLE steps but I am taking TOEFL... should I apply in prestigious colleges or those where they take IMGs for residency because many of my friends say the only use of clerkships and electives are to make contacts....
Clerkships/Electives can be useful in several aspects other than just getting you contacts and connections.
One of the most important things is to get letters of recommendations, such LoRs would much more powerful if it's written by physicians working in prestigious universities than if they were written by less recognized hospitals.
Not to mention the benefit of rotating in a highly organized and modern training program that will leverage your standards.
However, making connections is also important. Many IMGs do end up getting residency in the place where they've done clerkships.
