Hey

What time of the year depends on your med school curriculum . How many months of elective training are you allowed in your sixth year? american hospitals usually allow electives all around the year with few exceptions. No program will ask you to have an ECFMG certificate but step 1 score ( or even scheduling permit sometimes! ) may help you with some programs.

I am sure you will find many great posts in this forum that can help you. If you don't, feel free to contact me with any questions you may have

yale, cornell, jefersson, harvard, jhu do not require your step 1 score. But there are some electives there that do, so before you apply read the prerequisites column of the individual elective carefully. usu, the int med electives don't req anything but the surgical electives do. as you are from india, apply in your final mbbs year during may-june for electives you can do after finishing with your final mbbs exam. also, if you don't get any during that time, then you can re-apply once your internship starts and you'll still be eligible.
