Default Potential IM Applicant

I am an MS3 interested in IM, and I wanted to see if anyone has some advice on how I should prepare for the next year. I am a significantly below average student academically, but I would like to enter residency at a university program in the Southeast (AL, AK, FL, GA, KY, LA, MS, TN, SC, NC, VA). Here is some objective information.
School: Top 40 NIH (if that matters) in South
Grades: bottom half of class
Step 1: 209
Research: several presentations/posters at various school conferences; no publications
Clinical: passed all, honors FM
Red Flags: none
I am curious about what I need to do to bolster my chances of getting interviews, where should I apply, etc. I know its early on but Sept. isn't that far away and with my grades, any insight would be helpful.

Hii.I wish to add that this is basically an IMG forum so we may not access your application being an IMG. You are sure to get matched being an AMG, but I would love to direct you to sdn where they have dedicated AMG discussion on strength of AMG applicants and where to apply. I know this is not a direct reply to your question but I tried my best so that you get a more educated assessment in SDN. Hope it helps. And sorry if you found the answer rude.

Choose "---" if you don't want to tell. AMG for US & Canadian medical schools. IMG for all other medical schools.
