Question US Citizen versus Green Card Holder

Hey guys,

I'm a US Permanent Resident (Green Card holder) interested in Emergency Medicine, 2nd year of med school. I have noticed that several ER residency programs list being a US citizen as something they favor. Now my question is: are Permanent residents treated the same US citizens even though they are not technically, since they do not need visas, or are they treated like foreign nationals by the residency directors?

Thanks....

If your a US citizen or US resident that completed medical school outside of the US you are still considered an IMG/FMG (American IMG/FMG).

Because of your citizenship/residency status you will have the advantage of applying to more residency programs when compared to an IMG/FMG with a temporary visa.

Some residency programs also hold American IMG/FMG to the same standards as US medical graduates since they are aware that your citizenship/residency status gives you more access to training in the US.

Best - Victor

Default It shouldn't make a difference

The only circumstances when a US citizen is preferred over a green card holder is when you apply for "federal job". That comes into reality (in the medical field) in two situations:
  1. When you go for NIH funded fellowship. That's only in fellowships, in residencies you don't have NIH funded programs.
  2. When you apply for military programs.
Other than those two situations, technically, it should not make a difference for a citizen versus Green Card holder.

Are you sure they mentioned US citizen, or did they mention US graduate?

Also, the same issue was discussed before here

Default Thanks.....

Thanks for the clarification....

Yeah I saw this US citizenship thing in the list of criteria that residency directors look at when making residency choices.... I think was in the NRMP match report from 2012 and 2011.
