Unmatched 99ers! Seriously!
by StepTaker 07-26-2011, 12:12 PM

I was reading one of the recent threads in our Residency Match Forum and I stumbled upon a discussion about IMG match applicants who failed to match last year even though they had 99 in both USMLE steps!

So let's take this issue into some depths.

First of all, let me say, that's although it's very true that USMLE Scores are of utmost importance for your residency application but they are not everything.

There are so many other factors that play major role and can impact your application, such as your USCE, Year of Graduation, Research Experience, Strong LoRs, and most importantly Interview Performance.

Yesterday, I was talking to the coordinator of the residency program where I work currently, and she told me that last year they did not rank an AMG who had double 240s! I asked her why, and she simply said, the PD did not like her!

In addition, I know many IMG folks who had double 99s but they did not pass the CS from the first attempt. This is really crucial. PDs would like to have residents with good communication skills, not good written exam takers!

On another account, I know a friend with a great personality and super CV and who failed to match despite triple 99s! You know why? because he applied to super prestigious Plastic surgery University programs only.

Another Example, an AMG double 99er did not match, he was going late to the interviews

So bottom line, if you hear such stories, please do not get discouraged and stop fighting.

Every 99er who did not match must have had some critical problems either with his/her personality or with other aspects of his/her application.

Would love to read your comments about this.

Thank you so much for this post ,,,quite on time .

Yes I've heard so many stories similar to the ones you mentioned, specially regarding the interview part, you have to look confident, committed and at the same time likeable, I wonder is there anyway we can get some infos to prepare us for the interview and some of the very common yet important questions an applicant might face during the interview ?

thanks

yeah have heard similar stories as well. What scares me more than the interview issues and personality is the step before that - getting interviews. Its hard enough getting a few in the kitty and for me that would be the first step and then I'd work on my interview prowess..and be on time for them (if I get some).
Thanks StepTaker!

Thanx a lot ......Really a great information. I do have friends with 99 scores and didn't get residency.....might be due to these reasons.
