Default Free resource for understanding the US medical system

I'd like to point you to a good resource for IMGs which is currently available for free online. It is a book chapter on understanding the American healthcare system, covering topics such as

- what's Medicare and Medicaid?

- what's the Veterans' Administration medical system?

- how important is research for IMGs prior to starting residency?

- what are the expectations for residents in teaching, research and ethics?

The chapter is particularly relevant for those of you who are thinking about doing an observership, externship or a clerkship in the U.S., or if you just want to understand what training in the U.S. healthcare system is going to be like.

The document is a chapter from the book "The International Medical Graduate's Guide to US Medicine and Residency Training" which is a comprehensive book that has been jointly produced by ECFMG and the American College of Physicians.

You can check out the free chapter here.

I forgot to mention that the chapter was written pre-Affordable Care Act (aka "Obamacare"). You can read more about this important act here.
