New Online Letter Writer Portal (LWP)
by Sabio 06-14-2011, 06:23 AM

New to ERAS this year.

Writers of letters of recommendation will be able to log in to an online Letter Writer Portal (LWP) through the ERAS interface.

This is expected to make the process of uploading LoRs to the ERAS profile much faster, the ECFMG estimates it to be less than 2 weeks.

Previously, applicants had to contact their letter writers and ask them to send the letters via regular mail to the ERAS inbox, together with coversheet and DSF documents. The new procedure should make the process much easier.

No details have been disclosed yet as how this steps for the LWP will take place. But it's likely that applicants would be able to send the request via their ERAS profiles to their letter writers (the letter writer will get an email and instructions on how to upload the document).

New Online Letter Writer Portal (LWP)

I have a quick question as well. I have 2 US lors. I had waived my right to see them, so one professor of mine will be sending them to ERAS directly when the tokens open up, whereas the other professor has submitted me with a soft copy of the letter and mentioned in it that even though I have waived my right to see the letter, he would like to provide me with a copy which he has done. My question - with the new online document submission portal (for LORs) coming up this year, can I just provide them with the links and ask them to submit it there directly. Or must I go through the entire cover letter and works all over again...? I suppose to waive my right to see my letters from my home country I will have to go get new LORs, which might not be as easy, atleast thats the take home Im getting...any thoughts?

It's a good idea to ask them to use the new LWP if they have Internet access and soft copies of the LoRs.
It's not yet clear whether they will need coversheet or DSF, but logically they should not need it, because the link will be secure into your ERAS profile (with it's associated AAMC ID no.) so no need for them to go through the hassle of coversheet and DSF.

I think it's available now. Does anyone know how it works? Should I finalize my all LoR authors first?

Can somebody give us more information about this new portal and how it works? I'm done with my externship and my attendings would like to give me the LoRs soon. Should I tell them to wait until I figure out how this works?

Letter Writer Portal (LWP)

Hi Guys,

Any idea when will LWP be available for 2012 ERAS season? I could not find any details on how will it work.
Did anyone come across some instructions on LWP on ECFMG website?

hey, I think anyone can do it from this place. I tried using it after comfirming with someone i had previously worked with. But after I sent in the request, they decided to send it by mail, didnt specify a reason, though I was curious and wanted to know. Incidentally eras states that if you send in an electronic request then do NOT send LOr in mail, wont be accepted. but after a quick call they said that we can simply deny the request and send it in by mail... Anyway, another friend of mine was trying it the other day and she said that it crashed for a short while. So perhaps, more updates when I actually get to know someone whos done it.

By uploading, does it mean scanning the document through a scanner, and then uploading it online or can the writer simply types in the letter and send it?

hey haisook, I'm not quite sure about that! sorry! would like to know though! most people I know are using the traditional/old method barring a few who are in direct contact with their letter writers and hence are able to direct them first hand..I'm going old school as well...
