IMG matching in 2012 remained the same

There has been much rumors and speculations about the rate of IMGs matching into residency and that the increasing number of AMG grdauates would displace the IMG seats and therefore IMG matching numbers and percentages would eventually decline.

I have discussed this issue here http://www.usmle-forums.com/usmle-articles/20534-no-more-imgs-future-true.html you can check it for further details.

Yesterday, the ECFMG sent out an email giving us some numbers about IMGs matching in this year's 2012 match season.

They said the following;
The number of IMGs, including Fifth Pathway participants, who matched to first-year positions increased by 260 compared to 2011. Of the 11,134 IMGs who participated in the 2012 Match, 4,886 (43.9%) matched. In the 2011 Match, 4,626 (44.2%) IMGs were matched to first-year positions.
Ref: http://www.ecfmg.org/news/2012/03/27/img-performance-in-the-2012-match/
You can see that the percentage remains pretty much the same and even the absolute numbers are higher, more applicants and more matchers.

Furthermore, the ECFMG email also mentioned an important point that we (USMLE Forums staff) have always been talking about; the NRMP data does not include "prematches" and many IMGs obtain their residency positions via prematch, so this percentage is even lower than the reality. I personally think it's around 50% of all IMG applicants get accepted into residency.

So another year, and another successful IMG matching story.

This should give hope to IMGs currently preparing for the USMLE and getting ready for the 2012-2013 matching season.

Good luck to all.

its a great news but will it be same 2 years from now ....... I know its hard to predict the result 2 years from now but what I hear every year is that some 3000 additional AMGs will apply and then they don't :D which is a good thing for IMGs ..... so any news regarding that ?? I hope they don't add those 3000 AMGs in the next 2 years :p

The supply of US Medical graduates is going to grow over the next fews years, but the demand for physician services is expected to grow even more sharply. This is due to a few factors:

1. Population increase. There will be about 40 million more Americans in 2025 than there are today.

2. The US population will be an older population. (Older people generally have a greater demand for medical services).

Other factors are at work too, Physician working hours have tended to fall over the last few years - meaning that the growing number of doctors are a little less available than previously. There is a strong political movement for universal healthcare, which may add to the demand for access to a medical practitioner.

If anything, I see the demand for IMG's growing, not lessening, over the coming years. As has been pointed out, IMG's make up over 25% of the current physician workforce. Given that it takes between 12 and 14 years to train a doctor (undergraduate years included), I can't see any way that IMG's are not going to be at least 25% of the medical scene for the next fifty years (or more), at least.

Residency Matching

Hello,
This is my first time posting on this forum, however my concern is not about USMLE but Residency matching process. Could you please elaborate the figures mentioned on NRMP for 2012 saying total of 38,377 participants against total positions of 26,772 which includes 11,134 IMG candidates. Now if only the number of candidates were selected for the Posted positions (26,772) what about the rest even if the whole process included pre, during and post match residency. Or how they adjust the rest of candidates if there were more positions then posted.
Or my knowledge might not yet cleared of residency matching process.
Looking for your kind information
Thanks

About half of IMG's who try, do not match. They are free to try again next year. A large number are also withdrawn. Those withdrawn may have made a pre-match or failed their USMLE exams. The failure to match, especially among IMG's, accounts for the main part of the difference in the figures you are looking at.

The NRMP does not publish data about Green Card Holders, none of the points you quoted above refer to Green Card Holders.
