Heart Venous Pulsations (JVP Waves)

The JVP and the venous pulse / pulsation is a frequently tested concept in USMLE

Here's a quick review

A = Atrial contraction
C = bulging of the tricuspid valve during ventricular contraction
There's dip between A and C which conincides with the Tricuspid valve closure

X descent = is the filling phase when pr decrease then gradually increase as more blood fill the right atrium until it reaches a maximum at

V = which is when the tricuspid opens

Y descent = is the emptying phase where pressure decreases as blood leaves the right atrium and then gradually increase as atria begin to contract going back to wave a.

Can't see the dip between A and C in the graph!

. The "x" descent is due to a combination of atrial relaxation, the downward displacement of the tricuspid valve during right ventricular systole, and the ejection of blood from both the ventricles.
