Neuro Basilar Skull Fractures

There are a number of buzzwords when seen in USMLE should alert us to the possibility of basilar skull fractures:

  • Raccoon eyes: periorbital ecchymosis.
  • CSF rhinorrhea.
  • Battle's sign: delayed ecchymosis over the mastoid process.
  • Hemotympanum: blood seen through the tympanic membrane.
  • Pneumocephalus.
