Lungs Lung Gross Pathology Question

This patient, age 65 y/o, was a construction worker for more than 30 years. He also had an history of smoking for almost 40 years and few bottles of beer a week. He died and the pathologist found this in his lung:

A) Smoking
B) Asbestos exposure
C) Alcohol consumption
D) Synergic effect of A plus B
E) Synergic effect of B plus C

This must be a Malignant Mesothelioma = D) Synergic effect of A plus B

"There is no increased incidence of mesothelioma with smoking (not synergistic)"
pp. 79

So, the best answer in this case is B)

The only risk factor for Mesothelioma is asbestos exposure

BUT

Those with Asbestos exposure who have a history of smoking are at 60x increased risk for primary bronchogenic carcinoma

Those with Asbestos exposure alone are at a 6x risk of primary bronchogenic carcinoma (not just mesothelioma, although this is the classic association)
