Default Step 1 exam Period: august-october

Thought I would start a thread for those taking the exam during this period. I'm hoping we can all contribute to each other's success.

I have currently done the following:

kaplan notes and videos (1 1/2x)-think I forgot some of it though esp
anatomy because I found those profs put
me to sleep
-the 1/2 is because recently I felt I forgot
so much and had a small panic attack
uw 3x-made notes 2nd and 3rd time because 1st time did really bad
so I would recommend making notes on separate pieces of paper and
put the page reference from your first aid on the note itself
kaplan qbank (tried it out at first, but found it not helpful for me)
usmle rx qbank (just to go over FA)
usmle rx express videos (to go over FA)
Kaplan HY videos (found it helpful after doing kaplan videos esp for cardio because has the visual locations for heart murmurs with associated audio sounds-you can scroll over all areas of the chest and hear each sound). Very detailed so only do if you have time.
HY neuroanatomy
Conrad 100 ethical cases
Pathoma-very very helpful. tried goljan out but was too detailed to recall
everything and I could do pathoma multiple times so really gave
me confidence.
-made notes and attached pages to each first aid section so I
could remind myself of what each disease has not just the name

FA-done many times (lost count because I keep referring to pages as I do uw question bank and end up reading the whole page and associated sections for each topic) so let's say more than 5x

NBMEs did all of them. Started with 7 though. Online only. I know it is good idea to save some until the end but I did extend my period so it's too late now to change that. However, it did give me insight into my strengths, weaknesses and how they actually test the exam. Better to think positive at this point I believe as only a short time remains.

And that is my honest and detailed experience up to this point. May or may not be helpful. I found some people excel at learning with ease and others have to just work hard at it over time. I am the latter. Slow and steady wins the race as they say. In the end I'm sure we will become exceptional physicians.

Oh as of right now: doing FA and UW. and some HY neuro for images that may or may not show up.

I did kaplan 1x (but review some subjects from kaplan again and made notes)

Did Goljan 1x ( it takes time but I found it useful ) have flash card of it too so gona review from it now.

Did anatomy videos last month from kaplan cuz I havn't done it before and made some notes.

FA done 4x ( third time actually with my UW )

For ethics I used kaplan and conrad 100 cases.

For Epidemiology & Biostat used kaplan and lange book ( with 100 Qs) lange I found very useful some one recommend that.

UW 2x ( made some notes on seperate paper and some i wrote on my FA along with relevant topic)

No nbme yet but planning next week.

Now a days covering few topics from FA and done reviewing UW notes but left with some notes from kaplan and anatomy notes of kaplan..

Hi
I am planning for end of October.

I have done-

Kaplan once
Goljan twice
UW once
FA done with UW

Right now I am doing Usmle rx with FA to do FA properly and also because I am not able to do FA by myself. So Rx is really helping me with FA.
I am also trying to find sp for FA so that I can go over FA as many times as possible.

For now I planned to take it end of October but my first nbme (7) was not that good: 210 ! Way to go! ..228 is not bad for a first one slacker! By the way do you know where we can find answers and explanations for the nbme? Thx !

alittlebitmore: you're not crazy. I think at this point in time, we're all losing our minds and panicking a bit. try to get the most out of uworld as you. Read all the explanations of each choice and refer to your FA. That's what i'm doing. Do what works best for you.

Dr.ann: for images, i'm using HY neuro and kaplan neuro as well as google image searching. Also used university of michigan radiology section.

personally, Neuro is my worst course by far so I'm doing the kaplan vids again.

slacker.mle: your NBME score is really good. So no need to compare to any of us. You can just work on weaknesses and get that high score. go for it!

My NBME scores really varied along the time period when I started to now. Range was 140 (at start-was in shock with the performance) to an avg range now of (220-267). Plan on writing an NBME this week to see where I stand.

ramen: i'm not sure where you can find the answers for the nbme. Although, i'm sure if you look online you may find something.

bonoz: I can't really say of anything I've heard of from my friends about that.

good luck to everyone!

Hey everyone,

looking forward to feedback from exam takers these next few months to see what is being heavily tested. In the meantime, study hard and push yourself to get that high score each day. Make a study plan and stick with it.

good luck!

Well.
Don't worry about uworld percentage but worry about whether u know the stuff in uw in ur head. By the time u know uw very well in your next round you should be scoring in the 90s not by recognition pls!

For biochem i think kaplan notes are wonderful. Pharm is hard to retain , skmetimes i forget even simplest things like what is pilocarpine and what is phenelzine etc all those phe sound similar to me . I makes flashcards sometimes for hsrder stuff. Or just keep revising

Hahahahahahhahahaha
None of us here is a king in these. They sound so similar. U will learn a drug so well in detail knowing all MOA but u meet it again and it's like u haven't seen before.

thanks for the help slacker.mle & nsesereso!

I have finished most of biochem videos @ a faster video speed with my first aid and done some quizlet flashcards for pharm each night before I sleep and when I wake up to see how much I recall. Man do I despise pharm!

Have also started going over pathoma vids randomly as I know it must be very important for step 1.

I can only pray for the best now and see how it goes.

How is everyone else doing with their preparation?

If u haven't done Kaplan pharmacology vedios yet, then don't worry, u will love pharm with that man called Raymond! U will forget some though but u will remember quickly as u do the main qbanks. At times it's difficult to rattle the answers when as from spinal level. But u will be able to pick most of the right answers with practice.
The key to knowing pharm is continual revision.

Hi,
Wondering how is everybody doing. How is your preparation going?
As for me I will be completing Rx in 2 weeks.
Then I will give nbme 11 to see where I stand and after that FA and UW only.
Hoping to get that 250+ score.
Best of luck to all of you guys.

Default hello everyone

Warm Hello to everyone!
SO i have booked september 24, finally, oh GOd!!

I have done kaplan with videos, goljan 2 times (although second time i rushed). uworld qbank offline 1.5 times. nbme 7 offline 179/200, nbme 13 offline 178/200,
Yesterday did NBME 15 Online, scored 249.. I dont know if it is representative or not.
First Aid done 2 times.

Now my plan is to do Uworld online, FA 2 reads,, AND complete Rx (just did 1 volume uptil now) Is it possible? should i do something else?

Also about Pathoma, i havent read or listened the lectures, im freaking about it, should i give it an hour or two to the lectures everyday?

Good luck to everyone!

U will likely get above 250!
Ur results are so consistent even your offline score shows u are around 250.
I guess what u want to do over the next one month is barely possible.
Having done offline uworld 1.5 times means u can finish the online bank in 2 weeks. A score of 249 shows your pathology is good so pathoma could be done in a week 35hours. Infact you cannot complete urx over 2500 q. but u can manage to read FA 2 more times.
You may want to do nbme 16 as well.
Good luck.

Good luck to everyone!
i totaly agree with nsesereso . thats a lot to do with the limited time you have.. dont just read all those sources for the sake of completing the check list. stick to uworld fa . pathoma is not that long so do it if u want or just stick to what ever resource u used for pathology before goodlck. u have nothing to freak out about .

Hey LaFerrari that is an amazing score for an nbme!

I wish I could score that high. I think the highest I've scored is 220. That is with 8 months of studying. Looks like I am not destined for 240s or 250s at this point. Any advice you or other colleagues here could provide?

Pathoma only takes a few days to go through. Seeing as how you know pretty much everything, just review your FA and uworld and go over your weak areas in pathoma.

wish you luck

Thanx Dr.JayMD for the advice and words of encouragement.
When are you giving your exam? I hope you perform phenomenally on your exam! My prayers are with you.
I dont think i can give any advice right now, you probably already know better than me but for its worth i have found UWorld and FirstAid to be fantastic after setting your base with Kaplan lectures. Especially uworld, i think the more times you can go over it the better. and try annotating everything on FA. From Uworld, and kaplan, goljan whatever bcz we will be revising FA in the end so...

Default Need guidance

Hi guys.
I need some guidance regarding prep. Exam in December. Done with kaplan notes and videos once, except few topics from anatomy and physio. Doing goljan now. Aiming to scire250+ What nbme would you recommend and when to start UW? Any help and advices as to plan studies effectively will be appreciated. I understand that many of you have exm in upcoming few weeks and this May not be good time to give your input so Anyone who is done with exam or has it in oct is requested to put their input.
Thank you so much guys.

Thank you so much nsesereso. I appreciate that. Money is not a issue. I will do all nbmes online.
I am poor at CT/MRI and PATHO images. Can you suggest something to practice it or UW will be enough? One quick question, does anyone have offline version of UW? please please contact on polymerdell@gmail.com
Again thanks a lot.
Good luck.

you're welcome laferrari and thank you for your advice & prayers.

I have been going over FA and Uworld as many times as I can. My recall is not so great though it seems.

Do you think that knowing every single line in FA is very important or just knowing the main concepts is adequate?

Maybe I went overboard with the annotations from pathoma into my FA.

Plan on writing my exam towards the end of this month.

So nervous and thinking I may fail. I have already postponed my exam & cannot extend any longer. So panicking here a bit.

2 worst courses are pathology and biochem. So not too confident that path (the biggest portion of step 1 is bad).

Looks like 12-14 hours/day studying it looks & a miracle.

Oh and anyone who has taken the exam in august, please post your experience (roughly). Would really help us all.

Guys I have a few questions:

1) I have 2 weeks left. I want to take 2xNBMEs (15/16) and I want to take 2 UW SAs. Do you think that it's realistic for me to do one last FA review + 2 day quick FA review? I have planned it out and it definitely looks like a busy schedule. I only have 1 make-up day.

2) Is it worth doing or at least browsing through past NBMEs? Ones before NBME 7? Because I've heard they repeat questions from those too? Is this true? Is it worth going through those?

3) I need to refresh myself on heart sounds and murmurs. Any resources?

4) Also need to refresh myself on CT/MRIs of brain, thorax, abdo, pelvis +/- angiograms. Any advice here?

5) As far as sequence of practice tests go, I was think of taking UW SA 1 tomorrow, NBME on Friday, another NBME on next Monday, and then take UW SA2 + Free 150 on Friday before the test?

Really appreciate your help in this. I'm really freaking out. I was around 226 on NBME 13 2 weeks ago so I sure hope I have at least reached 230 by now.

Thanks

Hey bonoz i am o expert and havent taken the exam yet but here is what i would do . Hope it helps
1. Yes i would revise fa one more time but a 2 day review will not b productive i guess . On the contrary it might affect negatvely bcoz of the burnout from doin over 550 pages in 2 days . So just revise it ine more time.
2. I was thinking of doing the same but they r way too old so not much help i guess . There are more importnt things to focus on in the fial 2 weeks. And they dpmt really repeat tht many questions may b one or two will have the same theme by luck but defiitely no repitition except the images.
3. Totlly upto u. I have heard frm some exam takers being tested on murmurs without any history in the question and some getting history. I tried many sites but i think they r not easy to master and u wud probably be more confused so if it was me i wud just focus on reading abt the causes histrory and presentation of those mumursss.
4. Kaplan natomy has cts at the end of every section . Try those . There r no angiograms there but google a few like circle pf wilis etc .
5. Ok here i might try something different. Try doing one uwsa and oen nbme on the same day and then tke a nice gap for the next one so u can have plenty of time reviewing and reinforcing ur weak areas. Assesment every other day might imapct badly if the score doesnt come out as u wish.
And lastly keep urself calm and asss calm as possible. It will help a lot trust me :-) goodluck

Hey everyone,

So I have been busy at the library day and night studying hard for the step and not logged on to here for a very long time. Not one day off.

My day consists of waking up at 6am, quick workout for half an hour. Go to library by 7 after a healthy breakfast of tea and some fruits.

Spend most of the day going over first aid sections and uworld questions (right and wrong and seeing why I chose the correct or wrong choice). Although sometimes I feel I forget everything I just read.

Take random naps at the library. So turns out I snore, who knew? haha. Luckily the librarian is kind and reminds me that I need to get up and walk around so the material doesn't bore me.

I leave the library around 10pm or sometimes later. Did not tell my friends which library I study at because they all like to enjoy summer activities and none of them are studying medicine and will probably bother me.

So ya that's my life. Anyways, I see there's a lot of feedback on here which is good. No exam experiences which is sucks as the whole month of august has already passed. Hopefully some kind people will give us something.

Wanted to ask of what is the best method to answer nbme questions. Having some difficulty choosing between 2 right choices. Would appreciate any input whatsoever. Thank you so much!

Also, feedback from exam takers would be great.

Good job Doctor! Here it is a little bit the same with less time in the day and I'm in late on my schedule ...
For nbme try to put yourself in condition and pick the choice you find the best or eliminate the others by thinking at what they mean with them...at least that what I do for Qbank. I Plan to take another nbme soon. Which one did you took yet?

thank you ramennoodles! I will try that strategy and see how it goes.

No idea how the grading works for each question because it's not about how many you get wrong but what type of questions you get wrong. Not sure really. There must be some secret grading system they use.

understandable to fall a little bit behind on your schedule. Just make appropriate adjustments and i'm sure you'll be fine.

Recently I took nbme 16. Plan on taking 13 and 11 before my exam.

I found 16 very tough but maybe that's normal.

What about yourself?

Slacker: Yes, nauseas came at the first round for me, lol
Doctor2k14: Keeping the 16 for the end, just took the 7 and it wasn't that good 1 month ago. Hope the next one in one or two weeks will show a drastic increase in the score... :/

Try reading it 5 times!

1st read --> not bad
2nd read --> still manageable (considering I didn't master a lot of the stuff in the 1st read)
3rd read --> patience is wearing thin
4th read --> induced mood swings every 2 days (ranging from cursing each and every topic to feeling like burning the book)
5th read --> something like the bargaining stage of Kubler Ross model (just that it's not for grieving but for anger and insanity): I tell the FA to please help me out by passively diffusing into my brain.

Still have 6th and 7th reads to go and I'm dreading it already!

Well I'm planning for the end of Oct (I signed up for the 30th)

Gave only 2 NBMEs so far and 1 UWSA. The first NBME was in low 200s, the 2nd NBME (12) in high 230s.

UWSA1 obviously overpredicts so I scored in high 240s but correcting for that overprediction would put me in the 220s range, which is not what I'm aiming for.

I don't know how some folks on here manage to get >245 with using very few resources. I really would love to be in their shoes.

well thats still pretty impressive...i would say you are in the 230s now and u still got almost 2 months to improve....if you don't mind me asking, how many reads of FA took your 200 to 230? and are you using any other resources besides FA and Uworld?

Well only another NBME will tell me where I stand (and I shall be giving that very soon.)

I did my first NBME after 3nd read of FA and it was definitely low (and I made tons of silly mistakes). So I was quite depressed as I felt I wasn't studying FA the right way. Then I modified some of my resources (added/removed a few) to make sure I can get the best of out of FA). So I did one more read (4th read) and it improved to high 230s.

I used quite a few other resources but I think the two main resources I used extensively were FA & UWorld.

I'll definitely post the resources I used if once I get a good score (I don't want to do it now because I don't know if my study method is working. I mean once I start scoring consistently on those NBMEs, then I think I can be sure that I'm making progress.)

I HATE these NBMEs. They're the bane of my existence. I found 12 to be quite hard but I've read that 13, 15 and 16 are even worse (ranging from harder to hardest in that order.)

oh nice...do you mind sharing what exactly you modified in your study for the 4th read that took you 30 points up? you mentioned you removed/added some to get the best out of your FA? what exactly you did differently the 4th read? your help is greatly appreciated

Good luck. Going slowly here, in my first real thoroughly reading of FA...Will do an nbme when I'm done, around the 20 I guess....As for me I'm aiming the 220-230 range...Have a family to take care of, so my time to study is reduced. Keep up the good work everyone!

hey slacker.mle,

I'm just revising FA over and over with uworld questions. Trying to fit in some nbmes along the way. I despise NBMEs also as they really destroy my confidence. so that's my strategy at the moment.

Good luck to everyone here!

let's score high!

Oh and anyone who has taken the exam in august, please post your experience (roughly). Would really help us all.
I cant really say.. First aid looks pretty concise with something in every line. But of course the concept behind should be understood well. And dont worry! You are going to do great.. Remember the Anxiety Performance curve. Some worrying is good but excessive can decrease your performance.

Exam in little more than a week. So I did some online NBMEs and here's my feedback.

1) go with your first choice and don't spend too much time on a question or you'll convince yourself that "oh this question must be more difficulty than this" and end up making the wrong choice

2) read the question at the bottom first. Really helps you go through the question much faster. I found myself reading the entire passage first and then thought everything was important & got to the actual question and had to read the passage again.

So when looking at what they are asking for first, makes asking the question much easier as you read through the passage.

3) save time for calculations. Actually takes more time than expected.

4) you can't get every question correct (unfortunately)

5) you will see some overlap from uworld questions on your nbmes

Ok so here are my scores from my forms so far:

August 21: Form 7: 173
September 1: Form 13: 173
September 8: Form 11: 234
September 10: Form 15: 237

Notice that when I changed my strategy from september 1 to 8, my score changed drastically. I was overthinking and always chose the wrong answer. September 8, I just picked an answer and moved on.

This may or may not help people but it worked for me. There is no secret solution for these exams. Just make sure to know your uworld and make good notes from questions. Understand your first aid (memorizing that book is too much for me).

I always wondered about people who say "I think I failed my exam" then come out and tell us they scored 240+. Not sure if that concerns anyone else.

Oh and my uworld scores were all over the place if anyone will ask. So went from 50-80% depending on what was tested. I just made notes of areas I scored badly on. Uworld is a learning tool not a diagnostic of how you will do on the exam.

good luck to everyone writing & be confident!

i can not stress this enough. overthinking really ruins your score. may be thats bcoz we train overselves to the pattern of uworld. uworld and nbmes have a very different theme of questions i feel. uworld twists and turn the question and makes you really think , dig deep and figure out the answer but nbmes on the other hand i found to be sort of either 'general' and more direct or totally vague.
thanks for sharing these tips and good luck to you

Thanks for the input and good luck for the DDay Dr.JayMD! Overthinking is definitely not productive for questions, though sometimes it is hard not to fall for it...

I'm a bit disappointed that nobody has provided any feedback about their step 1 exam experience for the period of august-october. It is already halfway through september and august has already gone & we are in the dark.

There is still time. Please be helpful!

I will certainly post my exam experience here in hopes that it may inspire others to join. My exam is next week so you will hear from me then.

thank you.

I cannot be specific but the fact is that trust your nbme 15,16 and 13 scores. Your score will fall in between your nbme scores plus/minus 5
I scored 260 in nbme 15, 256 in nbme16, 258 in nbme 13 all nearly 3 weeks before my exam and my score was like a mean of those. practice hard and keep your concepts clean. kaplan videos and notes are great. revise with first aid. goljan is the book of choice for pathology. I gave my exam on 20 aug and i had lot of obs gyne related concept questions. infact there were few questions with almost similiar history and physical examination and same options ( and prob same answers!) as if they were testing my confidence of answering from the given choices...

Prepare well, learn to sit and focus for 8 hours... keep yourself hydrated and well fed during the exam. use the breaks wisely. i ate lots of snickers..immediate burst of carbs helps the brain to function better i guess!!
perspire now guys... U will smile tom for sure then!!....

Hi ramennoodles. thanks a lot dear. anatomy questions were exactly like u world. infact very few from anatomy. i cant recollect any tendon or muscle origin/insertion question ( may be i couldnt answer properly so i am using ego defense of repression!!) any ways neuroanatomy had those classical questions like uworld there was gross of the brain stem and pointing out normal structure with a clinical scenario and yup the cut section of brain and spinal cord with what area is affected with a given clinical symptom...

Hi excellence thanks a lot. well those questions were related to obs and gyne pathology. what helped me i guess was the robbins/goljan knowledge superimposed on obs and gynec teachings in my 3rd year of mbbs. so i guess its a combination...something what i call your previous hard work doesnt go in vain. it culminates into something higher and better...

Thanks a lot pioneer. To be frank I had just finished my MD pathology exam in may so was fresh with indepth knowledge of pathology as from robbins. hence i had one big subject less to worry. so i didnt do goljan more than 1/5th of the actual pages. fA also i went through some topics during the end days. Uworld i thorougly did once and than revised about half the questions again. I believe FA and goljan are excellent compilations for usmle step1 and you must go through it atleast once. i actually dont believe in number of times you do a book. more important is to understand the dots in present in it!!

Default Extending eligibility period as a student. Please help.

Please help me. I dont know if the rules are different for students. This was mentioned on ecfmg when I opted to extend eligibility period.

"Original Eligibility Period: 01 Sep 2014 to 30 Nov 2014
Extended Eligibility Period Requested: 01 Sep 2014 to 28 Feb 2015
Deadline: 26 Dec 2014
Note: ECFMG must complete the processing of your request by this deadline or your request will be rejected. In order to process your request, ECFMG must receive both the on-line part and, if required, the Certification of Identification Form (Form 186) or Certification Statement (Form 183-E). If your medical school is required to verify your status through the ECFMG Medical School Web Portal (EMSWP) Status Verification program, ECFMG cannot complete the processing of your request until it receives this verification. As a result, the time needed to complete the processing of your request may be contingent upon your medical school's response to the EMSWP verification request."

So, according to ecfmg, it may require form 186 and medical school verification. anyone has done it before as a student and has any idea? I have nine weeks for my exam. I've been advised to take 6-8 weeks of bed rest by the doctor as I have disc herniation. So, travelling to my medical school (which is a day journey) and getting all the process done again is impossible. I'm not able to prepare properly due to pain and discomfort, and I'm not very confident of giving the exam in other 9 weeks. I must extend somehow without having to send the form 186 again. Please help me!

I think your form 186 is valid for like few years (i dont remember but it is either 2 or 5 years). So unless you sent them your form many years ago, you wont need to send it again.

I'm testing end of October too! finishing FA and planning to take the 12....It is one with longer question stems like the real deal, and I read that 13 and 16 are the more predictive of the score so was thinking to do then like in October... If I find time to do everything, feeling kind of rush right now

Hello everyone. I am going to take Step 1 in October (last week). I have already taken NBME 13. I was thinking of taking a total of 3 NBME's. I have already bought Form 15 and was thinking about buying Form 16 as it is the latest one.
What do you guys think? I have seen so many posts floating around that say you should always take Form 7.
