Arrow My exam experience!

hey everyone

i just took my step 1 yesterday and i would really like to thank everyone on this forum.

it was very doable. i was teribly worried about being able to last there for the 8hrs. but it was not bad at all in fact i couldnt believe it when i was done.
i took a break after every block for 5 mins and it really helped.

i am an img from india and i just finished my internship last month.
total prep time is 3 mnths which is what i was worried about since almost evryone i tlked to told me it was too little.

i read all kaplan notes except anatomy and pathology.
for anat i only watched the videos since i was told they are low yield.
for path i did goljan rr once.
all other subjects i did kaplan notes twice over.
for biochem i also read lippincotts and for pharm i went thru katzung boards review.

i joined uworld for the entire duration and the biggest problem i never finished it completely even once. but i had a subject wise score of 80% in the 70% qbank that i did do.

the biggest mistake i made during my prep is not giving FA enough time. i read it half heartedly once. thats it. if i score bad itll be becaue of this single biggest mistake. it is great as i realised only with a few days left for my exam.

i did several self assessments over the last month here are the scores for correlation.

nbme 4 - 220 (4 weeks into preparation)
uwsa 2 - 248 (1month before exam)
uwsa 1 - 232 (found it to be the tougest out of all assessments)(1 week b4 exam)
nbme 7 - 228(5 days before exam)
nbme 12 - 235(3 days before exam)
nbme 11 - 235(1 day before exam) - found it easier.

will get my scores in a week and will know if my plan worked out.
im hoping for anything over 230.
fingers crossed.

nice job.best of luck with ur scores.

so how were the immuno and genetic questions...the new changes the ecfmg said they would be implementing with immuno?? howwas it i'm worried abt the changes..?

what abt the length of the questions...has it increased..i heard so..or its the same as UW?

in UW i hav the habit of highlighting imp things in the question.is it possible in the exam software too...?can we hightlight...coz it helps in long questns esp.

Did you find it heavier on Immuno and Genetics like the ECFMG update said it would be?

Congrats on finishing!

there were a decent no. of genetics questions. none were too hard tho. 2 involved pedigree diagrams and the rest were term definition oriented.

immuno i dont think appeared as much i would have wanted it to. it is surely my favorite subject. either that or i didnt realise them as much since i find them easy.

the only questions that really had me thinking were some of the anatomy ques and biostats and im sure i got most of those wrong and it is haunting me evry sec of the day.

gud luck to u guys!

the exam software is exactly like uworld. so dont worry u can highlight it helped me a lot too.

the length of ques is just like nbme. not too long. just skim thru the details and look at the answers to get an idea first. that shud help i did that and had abt 10 mins to spare per block in 5 blocks. the other 2 blocks were really lengthy and tricky and ate up most of my time.
usually whn i did tests at home i used to finsh wid a lot of time to spare around 15 mins. so try to pace urself well. it would help in the real thing.

gud luck

If you had to change any part of your preparation, what would you change (other than duration)?

And you will get your score back in 1 month, not a week... so relax for a month instead

thanks a lot. fingers crossed!

well if i had to change something in my plan it would be giving FA a few more readings. i went thru it just once.

also never really finished the entire uworld qbank. it wouls probably have been a better idea to do it a few times over.

but something i did do was perfect the kaplan notes some of the books i even read 3 times and i believe conceptually its so good that if u get it u dont need much reinforcement.

hope thats helpful!

ya this was the post i was looking for
just got my scores today after a long 5 week wait

i got 247/99

so everyone out there thinking it needs a minimum of 6mnths. i can tell mayb not.
I did my basic sciences 3 years ago but 2-3 mnths is enough prep time i feel

thank you everyone and good luck in your endeavors!

Congratulations Susanbal!

Can you share if we need to know the cross sectionos of neuroanatomy,
e.g. cross section at medulla, where the CN nucleus is located, etc?

CONGRATS!
I have one question - I have gone over Kaplan Lecture Notes ONCE. Do you think it helped you A LOT to go over them twice? I have read FA twice so far and plan on going over it more. My exam is in a little less than 40 days! Please help and give any other advice for the last month of studying !!

ya i'd say do neuroanat well.. i wish i had given it a lil more time instead of like 2 days..lol
its pretty high yield id say.

also yup i thnk reading kaplan again is important to solidify the concepts once more.. beyond 2 reads i dont think there is any need.

good luck
