Default pranavmerchant step 1 exp: 251

So two months after I gave my exam, due to silly paperwork issues finally today I got my score.
Needless to say Im more than happy :-)

Heartfelt thanks to this amazing forum and the amazing people on it!
Also many other friends on Whatsapp and FB.
God Bless the Internet!

This is not much of an experience, just a few random points that might help someone.
Atleast this is what I wished someone would have told me before my test!

1. Mine was a test pretty strange and different from the usual questions we see on UW. Closest to form 16 I feel in terms of question difficulty, maybe a little more. No buzzword or classic cues whatsoever.

2. Be prepared for the worst. 50% of questions are straightforward. The rest require either serious application of concepts or just educated guesswork.
If you have good instincts and usually get decent marks on UW or NBME then you are good to go.

3. FA and UW dont cover everything but they are yout best bet especially in the last 2 months.Practising questions under a time constraint is the key to getting your instincts up. The exam does not have any repeat questions from UW etc. You have to solve each question by using your previous knowledge and application skills.

4. Always be confident on exam day. You will face weird questions too, I was marking 12-15 in each block (I only mark the very hard ones) but the key is to be calm and make the best guess and move on to the next question.
I am really cool on exam days so that was a big plus point.

5. Get your NBMEs to your desired score, those are the only things that might give you confidence. Form 15 and 16 are the latest and the best. Regardless of my strange exam I landed up very near my NBME scores, so I suppose thats how these things are designed.

6. I used Goljan, Pathoma ,Kaplan, FA 14 and UW and feel these are very good. DIT is also fine but not indispensable.
Ultimately depends on how much time you have for your prep.
UW online 3 months was very helpful indeed.
I used to do 4-5 random timed blocks a day and review them over 4-5 days to build concentration from the very start so 7 blocks in the exam were no big deal.
Reading FA 4 times and memorizing it word for word was pretty dumb, there were no mug and vomit questions anyway but well I guess I did like that book too much lol!

I took a year to prepare but Im in med school so could afford that much time.
UW first pass random timed: 79%
Offline NBMEs 240 or so (use correct answers* 1.4)
NBME 16 (1 month before test): 247
NBME 15 (15 days before test): 245
Step 1: 251

So thats about it, hope I didnt scare you guys.
Just trying to be honest coz most of the experiences I read here said the exam is easier than UW and very straightforward etc... I guess those people were really lucky :-)

Above all work hard and give it your best shot.
I will stick around and help the people on this forum for as long as I can.
Good Luck!

Congratulations. What advice would you give on UWorld annotations? Did you annotate stuff from UWorld into First Aid? What to annotate from UWorld?

yup directly into FA.
whatever concept is new just put it down near the respective FA section. FA has a lot of space for that.

Awesome score pranav. Congrats. U said there were no straigt recall questions from FA. So what do u recomened doing in the last one month of prep. I hav read fa 2 times and done uw once. Nbme 7 score 228 about a month back. Nbme 3 score 248. What do u suggest? Should i read fa one more time ? Or solve uworld again? Or pick kaplan qbank?

dont do anything new in the last month.
revise forgettable stuff from FA and do UW wrong ones.

most importantly do form 15 and 16 online ASAP.

Congrats on the great score! You can take off the heavy burden off your chest now! Enjoy while you can!

About the exam contents, how much of it were from gross anatomy and neuroanatomy? I have heard they increased the amount of anatomy questions, would you agree? Did you run out of time at any block, and finally on average how much spare time did you have after each block.

Thanks!

Yes Absolutely. Gross anat was huge. 4-5 Qs in each block.
Pretty weird too, I was just guessing between two or three options I could narrow down to.

Nope never ran out of time.
Keep an eye on the clock, every 10 Qs should finish in every 12 minutes this way I used to get 6-8 minutes at the end to review marked Qs.

Do you feel the FA + UW is what helped you most? IMO by the time you finish with FA + UW, you will barely be able to recall anything from other sources SPECIALLY Kaplan LN. What are your thoughts on this?

Yes thats true.
KLN is very good to clear your concepts.
But what you remember on exam day is only FA and UW

I feel they did help me no doubt, but what helped me most was my ability pick the right answer from the given (very confusing) options.
That just takes practice.

nope Im still in the final year with my final exam in Nov. I dont think its hectic at all, maybe coz my college is cool that way. You have to plan and schedule well ahead.
Its not easy but its not impossible either.
Good luck!

Yes I did half of Qbank offline before UW.
Do it if you have time.

Path Micro BS genetics are really good.
Physio is overkill.
Rest I did not do.

Hey pranavmerchant congrats for your great score!!!

My question is a little bit different. I couldnt quite understand the score calculations of Nbmes and step 1. I ve answered 91% of questions correctly in nbme 7 but ı ended up with 249. So based on this can we say i have to answer 95-96% of questions correctly to end up with 260+ in real one?

Thx in advance

For that Ive used Pathoma videos, Goljan RR and audios.
And FA of course.

Its not compulsory but You should start questions early in your prep.
since we keep UW for the end you should start some other qbank at the beginning to gain practice.

When should I start doing questions? After a complete first read or after a subject review?

Do some other qbank like Rx or Qbank after each subject.
UW can be done at the end.
