Default Take KAPLAN now or after first read?

Hi everyone, I finished basic sciences 4 years ago and am starting to study for step 1 now. I have a very weak foundation and have had very low motivation due to depression, so I have been having a lot of trouble studying.

I am thinking of taking the 7 or 14 week kaplan live lectures.

1) Take them now to build a base and gain confidence
2) Take them in february to solidify and master what I learn in the next 6 months.
(after first read of Kaplan notes and videos)

I am thinking if I do it now, maybe the 14 week is better, if I manage to somehow beat depression and study now I can try the 7 week one in Feb.

Perhaps try this out: find the textbooks online for sale and purchase them. then go over them with the kaplan videos which you can also purchase online. You will learn so much.

From my fellow classmates, they told me kaplan live lectures were not so useful as they go through material very quickly and expect you to know the books and material fairly well and the notes you will have taken down from the videos, will be the same as what they teach in live lectures almost word for word.

So it is a waste of money. Spend that on uworld, nbmes online and kaplan qbank.

Just my advice as I was also thinking of attending live lectures until I received feedback from classmates who could not cancel lectures attended since it was past the date to cancel the charges.

However, choice is yours.

Thank you so much for this response. I have heard from a couple people that it is fast paced as well, but others have said they liked it because doing the videos and notebooks after was a lot easier. It also helped motivated them. I don't know what to do now.

My school (in caribbean) is saying if I don't do the exam soon they will kick me out, I am just recovering from depression and am now once again so stressed out and worried about trying to get this exam done as fast as possible

Hey, I took the 14 week live lectures and I can definitely say read the material before taking a course from Kaplan.
If you don't you're going to understand the information you get from them for maximum a couple days and it goes back to 0. If you read and then go in you'll know what they're talking about and all the little pointers they give will be a lot easier that way.

I went in thinking it can give me a good base and confidence and realized I wasted a lot of money by doing that because yeah I went through the material but it was fast and felt so new again since it had been 4 years for me as well that when I went through the material again it felt new.

In short, read and then take Kaplan course!

Thank you so so much for this advice. I did not end up taking the course, I have three months now to study as much as I can on my own before going to the next classes.
