Default UW SA 1 gave me 232; Test in 2 weeks, want to get a score in 230s

Hi guys,

I took UW SA 1 today and got a 232. I know it overpredicts. My test is in 2 weeks. My plan is to go over FA one more time and take NBME 15, 16, and UW SA 2+Free150.

My previous NBMEs have been so:

NBME 7: 205 (2 months ago)
NBME 11: 215 (5 weeks ago)
NBME 12: 222 (4 weeks ago)
NBME 13: 226 (3 weeks ago)

I was going to take the test last week but decided to extend it so that I could study a bit more and take more NBMEs.

I am aiming for a competitive specialty and ideally wanted a 240+ score. But I would be happy with a mid-230s score at this point.

Any advice? When I was taking the test I felt like I had forgotten some things and another pass of FA would definitely raise my score by several points.

Do you think that I should just press the gas pedal, study hard in the time left, and see what happens in the next two NBMEs?

Because if I extend, it won't be until December or January that I can take the test.

I don't want to end up with a score in the 220s...

This means u need to get 10 points more than ur nbme 3 weeks ago.
I think only nbme can decide that one. So at least by end of this week give nbme and know where u stand. If u get above 230 u are sure of getting in 230s if all things go on well.

Hey guys!

I could really use some expert advice.

My exam is in exactly 6 days. I still have to re-review micro/biochem/anatomy/pharm (all drugs again) + forgettables + take 150 sample exam + memorize equations/rapid review/last minute stuff.

To be honest, I feel rushed. I thought that in the last week I will have finished FA and UW marked (which I haven't). I was going to use my last week to do very final prep (i.e., go through very weak subjects, memorize volatile subjects/pathways, etc.). When I think about all the pathways, cycles, drugs, etc. that I still have to cover, I honestly feel overwhelmed.

I still haven't taken a test since my last UWSA 1 a week or so ago. My plan few days ago was to take NBME 15 tomorrow and let that decide whether I would go ahead with it or extend it.

I want to match into a specialty where the average score is 240 for matched applicants. I wanted to be at least +/-5 points within that. I cannot extend the test by another week or so as my rotations have started - I will have 5 weeks off during the winter holidays and was thinking about that as an option (I know that I will forget things by then, but hopefully I can study in the time between, strengthen my weaknesses, and really make a push in those 5 weeks?).

I am also concerned about potentially wasting "NBME 15" if I do end up extending.

Please advise - I'm feeling the rush.

Thanks

Hey Bonoz,
Well, 6 days before the D day, it is pretty normal to feel the rush I guess.. but at this point it is important to stay calm.
So your goal is >240. Will a 225-235 be enough for the residency you are expecting? I think step 1 may not be everything, but you know probably better on this than me since I don't know which specialty you are aiming for. If the average score is 240, it's probably mean there is scores below that.
If I were you, I'll think carefully if you want to take this test now, even if it happened that you score a little below 240, Then take the nbme 15, see if you feel in a comfortable zone. And if it is again a yes, stay calm, go one day at a time to try to do your last revisions, you can fill a lot in this 6 days, particularly if you stay concentrate without panicking! Of course if the answers are big no for both of the previous questions, or if you feel in your gut (stress apart) that it is better to reschedule, well, then you have your answer...
Well, just my 2 cents...hope this help. Stay strong, you're almost there!

you are thinking right. just focus on ur weak areas and try to narrow down your TO-DO list dont overstress yourself with the burden of doing everything in such a short period of time. may impact negatively on ur test day performance from the fatigue/burnout. good luck

You're taking a risk by rushing into the exam.
Especially without a decent NBME score I would not advise anyone to give the exam.
But if you've already made up your mind no point getting confused here.
