Help Failed the test by few points, your opinions

Hello guys,

I took the step 1 and failed by few points. I like to know if its necessary to take a review like pass program, falcon etc. to pass the exam or studying by my self its good. I Read again the First Aid, first aid general principles and right know I'm finishing the Goljan book to then begin doing questions. Opinions will be appreciated,

thanks....

Do you mind telling us about your study before failing? Did you study hard? Did you do any questions?

I think you should review everything again and start doing as many questions as possible.

Hi, I only read the first aid and do world questions. My study was good but not the best i think because at that time I had a job and the hours that I use for study was about 4 or 5 hours a day. Thanks for the comments.

Hey Charles,

I took Step 1 in 2005 and Step 2 in 2007 - residency in internal medicine at NYHQ 2008. Let me re-direct your focus as per program directors. The USMLE Step 1 score is by the far the MOST important gauge to see if you will get an interview - followed by Step 2 CK scores and then Clinical Clerkships & recommendation letters in your specialty of interest. I am sorry you failed - if you pass the next time around even with a score of 85% (210ish) on Step 1 - the chances are your application will be put to the bottom of the pile (especially if you are an International Med Grad). For you to prevent that - you NEED at least above a 95% (230 and above I believe) - as well as good step 2 ck scores to be considered

If a program director sees a failing grade, and then on the repeat attempt sees a 99% - he/she will most likely be convinced that something happened that you failed. He/she is most likely to ask you to an interview to find out your struggles (They only care about your struggles if you get a HIGH score). At which point, you can say whatever (you were sick, your family was going through economic issues, you missed a lot of questions on your exam because of loss of time accidently, etc etc) AND they will BELIEVE you.

Step 1 holds the most weight by far in terms of residency interviews. You only have one shot at getting a really high score your second time around - If I was you, I'd take a live prep class or at least an online class (depending on your motivation) - but NOT study alone or do the same thing I did when studying for it the first time around. Falcon is definitely better than the Pass program - and in Step 1 they surpass Kaplan - mainly cause they got Goljan teaching up to date material for the current USMLE. The professors themselves do the free tutoring after class. Questions is great - but with a failing score I think you may need to re-evaluate your fundamental knowledge and content that's hard-wired into your brain. Maybe you need to look at the material from a different angle??

Hope this helps and good luck!!
