Cre-Lox recombination is a special type of site-specific recombination developed by Dr. Brian Sauer (DuPont). Cre-Lox recombination involves the targeting of a specific sequence of DNA and splicing it with the help of an enzyme called Cre recombinase. Complete knockout of many genes causes early embryonic lethality, hindering the study of those genes in later development and adulthood. Instead, Cre-Lox recombination is commonly used to generate a conditional knockout animal, in which a gene is only knocked out in a specific tissue or at a specific time.
