Thumbs Up My Step 1 experience

Hi everyone, Im Jyo from India and I would like to share my step 1 experience with you all. I gave my exam on sept 3 and got my results on sep 24th. My score is 239 and i have to admit that I was aiming for a 240. So I was a litttle disappointed with that.

People close to me have told me that I still hav chances so Im gonna do a better preparation for step 2 ck

My Exam was extremely difficult and trust me they dont use classical presentations of the disease anymore. For me, the time management in each block became difficult after the third block. So I think those who are giving the exam should focus more on solving more questions on a timed basis. Its all bout questions and less about the knowledge now.

I made some obvious mistakes which I regret even today. So please make sure you read and revise a lot. First aid is everything! and Dit videos were quite useful in the end. Uworld and the real exam are quite different so exam takers dont be fooled by a high score in uworld. the nbmes are closest to the real exam. To be even more precise, nbme 16 was quite predictive for me where I scored a 243.

Its very very important to have a proper study scehdule with a lot of breaks in between. Never ever exhaust urself and have too many burn outs. I took over a year to prepare and still it was not adequate. Im a final yr student so it was a big challenge for me to read everything. Do know bout the new topics OUTSIDE of first aid tat is being increasingly tested in recent step 1 exams like urinary incontinence and its types.

Any questions, please ask me I would love to help. Though my score aint great I do know a lot bout what you should not do while u prepare. I dont want others to repeat my petty mistakes

Question Congrats..

HI , congrats, as 239 isnt that bad score..
I'm also from india , ahmedabad.. aiming for 240++ as high as possible..
I've done NBME 11,12,15,7... quite good performance.. but i havent done 16, which is quite hard, i have heard..nd i have also heard that exams have become heard from last few months.. my exams in 2 days.. i m worried that exams have become tougher. my basic concepts are very clear. nd I had no problem in NBMEs, so please advice what should i read in this 2 days..??
+I haven't done FA, as most of it was covered in kplan+goljan.. I've done usmle rx..which covers FA..
should i read FA now??

I suggest you take up nbme 16 asap online. Because that one is the closest to the real exam.. Not doing the fa might be a bad idea.. cause the fa has all the high yield facts.. can i please know ur nbme 15 score? all the best for ur exam

I would like to ask a couple of questions

1.Did you use kaplan videos or lecture material?
2.Did you use goljan or pathoma for pathology or something else?

I am asking this because they are highly refereed by other people and i am just beginning my journey.

Hi Jyotsna. Congratulations on your score! My preparation story is almost exactly like yours. I, too, am in final year and been preparing for a year now. Going to give exam in October. So, I have a month? Any suggestions on how to best utilise this time?

I have taken NBME 13. And, I think I would have to agree that "buzzwords" and "classical presentations" were not that frequent on it too. Got 570(243) on it and I want to improve on that. Being an IMG, I want to be safe.

And please don't beat yourself up. You have a good score and there's still a long way to go. Stay confident.

That's a great score, good job and congrats!

How many hours a day do you think you were able to study for that year? Did you have a good foundation on the topics already or did you feel like you were starting fresh when you started rreading?

I tried scheduling my exam sooner but there is no date avalaible until 10/18 ( sat), i really need the score latest by 11/5( wed).... There is no accurate data/ post about exam takers on saturdays...

Kaplan lecture material is very useful but i did not have much time for their videos though. and also both pathoma and goljan are highly useful in preparing for path.

I could read for an average of 4-5 hours everyday. But since it was hectic, on some days i would just close my books and get some good rest! yes i felt i could study better because im still in med school and did not feel fresh bout the subjects

Im afraid i dont remember much about the exam content right now But I can say that medicine is being highly tested too. That is, the exam looks like step 2 ck now. behav sciences is tested just like always. i did not find much difference from the nbmes.

Hi.. I get really scared when you guys at the exam was extremely tough..
If the exams are actually tougher than the nbme, how can they still predict our score?

please do not be disheartened by the exam being tough. it varies for everybody who take the exam. maybe i found it tough because i was convinced that the exam might be easier so y dont u think of it this way? now that u know that the exam is tough, u can prepare way ahead.. just convert ur fear into courage and work on u can do it

anatomy was not so tough if u ask me but they kept asking more bout nerve supply. and biochem was pretty direct only.

pathology and medicine are closely related right? so yeah focus on that and have an overall understanding of different concepts!

I usually did one second yr subject along with a first yr subject. and for behavioral sciences i used kaplan notes. i used to keep revising ethics and other stuff as i kept forgetting it a lot. study time: 4-5 hours a day. one week before maximum of 7 hours a day. but it will vary for different people

Thank u for replying.. Makes me feel better.
But I have been hearing that the exam is becoming more clinically oriented and tougher over the years.
If that is true,do u still think nbme is a good analyser of my preparation?
