Exam-Results July 13th, 2011; Step 1 Exam Results Thread

Hello guys,

After the long wait for Step 1 results, it will finally be out in less than 24 hours time for those of us that sat for the exam after May 17.

There are are lot of people expecting results so I have decided to start a thread which will be a central meeting point where people could post their scores, talk about their preparation strategies and offer advice to subsequent test takers.

I hope we all find it useful

Good luck everyone

@Andy- congrats on the score!!! WOoHooo! Now you can put this behind. I sure would like to put it behind also.

@Payal- Hope is the last thing you should loose. Loose it never. Now reinforce all of your other skills; research & investigations, get experience somewhere, LORs, etc. You passed. Now you can also put step 1 behind and look forward to doing even better in the next ones. Don't get disappointed, I'm sure that mostly people that get a higher score post it here, so it may seem that everyone scores in the 90's, but statistically in reality that is not the case. I wish you good luck.

Thanks guys for posting scores. Good luck!

Hey it's just a score, no darkness in front!!! Be happy you passed and focus your attention on Step 2 now, that's all there is to it!

Default failed badly.

i found out today i failed step 1. i have a husband, in laws and my own family to answer to now. personally, i'm not too surprised i failed i knew i wasn't ready going in and was pretty sure i failed when i left. i am pressured to get residency asap which is why i took it when i wasn't prepared.
i want to do my residency in psych. i have scheduled my step 2 ck for aug. end and am really not prepared because i have been anxious/ depressed about my step 1 result coming out. i am taking step 2 cs in a few days so i'm studying for that.
would it have made a difference if i had walked out and forfeited that exam? and what is the opinion of what i should do now? should i cancel step 2 ck and come back to it later and take step 1 now?

yes they are reported as far as i know.. but dont let the score depress u, is just an score.. is not the end of the world... dont let the test defines you.. Program Directors knows we are Doctor, not test takers... so go easy on you =)...

Everything happens for a reason... Now go with all the confidence on you and rocks the CS... =)

Dude people are busting out with great scores and being all like "what will I do?" This concerns me....Soon we'll find a 99er being like "ahh man, 99, I wanted 100"..lol...just kidding

88 is a good score. Surely you can enter pediatrics with that. Of course, only you know what you were expecting and what you think you're capable of getting. If this is much lower than your expectations, analyze this situation and push higher for the other steps. IDK if you think it's low, only you know what's low for you, but all in all, I think its a good score and you should be proud because pediatrics residency with that score is highly doable. Thanks for posting! Good luck!

Keep your chin up, I promise you a lot of people in the past have found themselves in the same position as you. You have to really focus on step 2 and then go back beat step 1. Better days are in deed ahead. Have confidence in yourself.

If you havent take the UW or Qbank Kaplan please go trough it. It will help you a lot... and Take some NBME before giving a try to the real Exam again...

So, your next plan could be, if you have time, go over Kaplan Books again... if not Go for FA read as Hope2pass said, 4-5 times and Do some Qbank Kaplan or UW and schedule a NBME 7 or 12... ( do as many as you can )

and then it will predict or kind of say where you at before giving a try again.

the mispreception that students have/had about a score is totally bogus! I'm in Internal Med residency - my friend in peds in UMDNJ - she got a 88 on step 1 and then a 92 in step 2. I got a 86 step 1 and a 99 step 2 - we're both in the residency of our choice. keep it moving ya'all. if you failed - take a step review class whether live or online. If you barely passed - SHAKE IT OFF and leave that energy behind you - get some new energy for your prep for Step 2ck, cs, clinicals, research. Although Step 1 scores are heavy looked at during residency interviews - they DO NOT DEFINE YOU (according to my program director based on other programs directors) please remember everyone that it is your overall Package!!!

Falcon prep is really good for Step 1 prep - check out http://www.falconreviews.com/v3/live....html#upcoming

dont forget Uworld.

mustn't be afraid

drop that darkness sista! u still got a chance i reckon!! trust it!

kick Step 2's ass (its much easier than step 1 - all about the micromanagement of a patient)
what's the next step in management?
whats the next best step (treatment or diagnostic test)
what's the most accurate test? (not the same as what you will do)
what's most likely diagnosis?

as one of my favorite professors say - "let the mortality rate drive you"
learn everything about diabetes management, etc - but forget about Nevus-Bleb syndrome. lol

Q-cards is good for a solid foundation before you start hardcore questions on Uworld.

I got a 99 on step after an 86 on step 1 - what did i do different for step 2? I took my time and didnt apply to residency right away. If you are not prepared yet for step 2 ck - dont take it in August - take ur time and learn it all inside out. Step 2 CK is the only chance you have to prove yourself in being granted an interview. THat's how I see it. Live lectures vs online classes - but NOT self-study.

prepare for a marathon - runners prepping for a 26 mile marathon, train doing 30-32 miles - so 26 is nothing for them. at the end of 3 months i started questions and increased my stamina to fight late exam fatigue and early anxiety by doing 10-11 hours of questions with 5-10 minute breaks in between blocks, and one 45 minute for lunch - for a month 6days a week before the actual exam. Practice like you play the tournament - play the tournament like you practice.

Let's get it in

Are you an American citizen or green card holder? Because that alone can make a big difference in your application. Letting us know will also make it easier for people to have a better understanding of what their chances are.

Thanks

Thanks

American Citizen.

Here's how I see it based on my experience with my program director. If there is an international student who has an F1 Visa (or no visa and needs help obtaining one) - any hospital is willing if scores on both steps are in the high 90s. I know some hospitals will shy away from those who don't have any visa status or require one to work as a resident - because its a hassle for hospitals to do that, and even to some degree a liability - their status with Medicare reimbursements for residents also affects this decision. But in the end again, if you have a student from India who is flawless in their performance and has amazing scores on both steps - even those hospitals who shy away might reconsider.

hope this helps.

That wait for these scores was torture. I got 206/85. I know its bad but is it still doable for me at this point or is it a lost cause?

I got my results on July 13,2011, I wan not know that there was a delay because I took my exam on June 22 and received the score exactly after 3 weeks. Anyway I scored 232/99.thank God for that and I would like to share my experience:
I started my effective studying on October 2010 by doing Kaplan lecture notes which I finished by the end of the year.I did it only once.
Then I did Kaplan Qbank for 3 month, the first 2 months I use it only as a studying material that is
Make tests and review the answers with first aid and Kaplan medessentianls. By the way when I read firstaid for the first time it made me frustrated later it become the only book I read in.
After finishing Kaplan I started 2 months of UW Qbank and i did 2 test/day and did all the incorrect question when I finished. And continue to review on firstaid until 2 weeks before the exam I feel that there is nothing else I can do and I reviewed some important tables and images from the back of firstaid.
On the exam day I was so anxious and I feel completely lost on the first and second blocks that I barely Finnish the block and there were many answers that I am unsure about. On the third block I gain more confidence and the whole exam ran very smoothly. So my advice is try to kill the fear and anxiety as soon as possible.hope that this experience be helpful and I am ready to answer any question if someone have.good luck for all.

I made notes of Kaplan and UW Qbank which I review in the last week before the exam, but only few of them was useful as some notes I found silly because I wrote it in the beginning of my studying. One block per day I think is not enough, I did tapper day and I was not satisfied.

I read my own notes about kaplan and UW notes not revised the whole thing. Doing untimed tests is ok in the begining but later u have to switch to the timed mode to practice ur self on pacing. Try to do subject by subject first together with firstaid then do everything in timed mode. But remember that I am telling u my experience not giving u a professional advice that may work with u or not. So try to plan ur study according to ur need and preference and do not do anything that u are uncomfortable with. Good luck

your best bet is to personally get to know some program director and definitely you need more time. you will be doing residency for lifetime +- one year does not mean much, look at it from other side.

yes always forfeit if you feel ur failing.

are you looking at doing this yourself (self-study)? or are you going for a prep course (online vs live)?

I don't know if 3 months is enough but that depends how much you know at the start of the 3 month training you will be putting yourself through.

Absolutely! now you have to do consistently well on Step 2 CK (which is a bit easier because its less abstract than Step 1) - pass CS on the first try - clinical rotations and electives in the area you want to specialize in - you need to do good on those rotations, and of course letter of recommendations from those specialty areas are always a plus esp if its coming from a dept program director or chairman. These hold the most weight when programs are selecting who will be candidates for interviews. Once you get an interview, you have to do something extra like - exemplify your skill set and what sets you apart from others
