Thumbs Down Failed step1 twice!!!

Absolutely dejected n heartbroken...
My first attempt was in oct 2010!
I was still doing the last year med school then,i wasn't not prepared, still had to take it because my parents strongly asked me to.
My second attempt was in May2011.
I had put in maximum effort.
Did usmleworld twice with 70+.
Made note out of it as well.
Did kaplan lecture notes thrice,Did FA also!
Did the difficult topics with lecture videos n made extra notes of it too.
Actual Exam was pretty tough though..
But,still thought the hard work would pay off!
It did not...
Go result today 176/68
I am doomed & i dont know if i have hope!?
Please help!!!!!!

Hi Lizy,

Your preparation for the second time around looks fantastic! It sounds like a thorough studying for the second attempt! I am not sure how this happened!! Did you take NBME's before your exam to evaluate yourself? And a UW score of over 70% is amazing! But its done and just move on from here, its better to have failed than to get a low score! I would suggest you work on your weak areas and may be take a review course or an NBME to see if you would have actually failed the exam! May be you can request them to re-check your exam incase there was some sort of mistake?! GOOD LUCK!

hey hope2pass!
thanks so much for the reply.
right now,i am so shocked.. i rly dunno what to do.
No,i did not take nbme. I studied in a new college,no seniors to guide us,so,i was not really aware of it.
I am not from a well off family, already feel worse that my parents spent so much on the exam. A review course here costs twice the exam fee,so,can't afford it, i will have to prepare from home itself.
I don't know if applying for recheck will do any good because a just pass for the effort i put in will only be a glorified fail!! Will again be heavy on dad's pocket.
I Will hafta give the exam again, that's all i can do.
But,will i get atleast an IM residency in case(GOD WILLING)i pass in my next attempt?
Was hoping to do surgery, that seems like a dream now!

Well don't let it dishearten you! From what I have heard (coz im not an expert, i still have to take my step 1!!) is that people who do not do so well on their step 1 or get a low score need good letters of recommendations and need to get as much clinical/research experience as they can get! However, since you failed your step 1 you have the oppurtunity to bounce back and get a really good score! Again, from what I've heard, once you fail and then get a reallly good score in your next attempt, then the Residency directors look at that as a positive change! So if in the next attempt you get, lets say a 99 (hopefully!) then you have a good chance!! But say you passed with a 78 in this last attempt then your chances wouldve been slimmer unless you did exceptionally well on Step 2 and the LOR's & research experience. So give it your all for the next attempt! GOOD LUCK

totally agree with hope to pass..
i know one of my firend failed step1 two times then he got 99 in step1 and 99 in step2 and now he is in residency in states.
JUST TRY TO RELAX FOR AT LEAST ONE WK.
then
1)see in which subjects and parts u are weak try to cover them up
2)try at least two NBME forms
3)as u have exposure to real exam now u will do better i hope so..
FOR MATCHING AND RESIDNECY dont think about it now JUST DO AS HARD AS U CAN..
and keep in touch with this forum as all seniors are here to help us..
DONT JUST BE DESPERATE AND DONT LET THEM GOT U AGAIN..ALL THE BEST

Hi Lizy, so sorry to hear what happened but don't lose hope, just keep the faith and keep pushing forward. Are you a IMG or AMG? I think that makes a difference in what you may be able to match in, but if you do well the next time around and get got recommendations, you should be able to match something and at the end of the day you'll still be a doctor.
This forum is amazing and people are very willing to give advice on pretty much anything, and will encourage you along the way. Just keep on being strong and believe in yourself that next time you will do well. Take a few days off to regroup, then start again. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply, heights!
Unfortunately,I happen to be an IMG,I know that's bad.
Anyway,i won't give up now.
I just have to do it. Not for anyone else, but, for my personal
satisfaction, else, I'll have a tough time giving any other local exam also,
due to lack of self confidence.
Hope i can give it my all this time!

Hey Liz.

Hope u dont mind if I interject. I failed 2 classes in basic sciences - avg gpa 1.87 by the time I sat for Step 1 for which I eventually pulled out thinking I was going to fail - then got administrative withdrawal from Ross (IMG). So i was looking at discontinuation of medical education, failures in two essential classes, and 1.87 gpa. finally took my exam and failed with self-study (I also had no money for live lectures). Then took live lectures with Falcon - out with a new loan of $10,000 (money doesnt matter at this point) - and got a 211/86%. My chances for residency were not good still because of the ONE failure plus a checkered resume already. I knew I had to buckle in and not be scared to succeed.

Clinicals - As and B+s - mostly As. Great recommendation letters from program directors and chairman of medicine. Passed Step 2 CS on first try (practiced for 3 months straight and "loved" the process - not thinking of my past at all). Step 2 CK I got out of house and rented a room for 3 months - got another $10,000 loan (what difference does that make at the cost of your career) took TWO live lecture courses over course of 5 months =- took all NBME's one in beginning, one in middle - and one 2 weeks before exam. U World all the way. Scored 246/99. Got a residency in IM in a hospital of my choice. End of story.

TWO failures is going to hurt you if you don't get a 99% - don't mean to scare you, but anything is possible depending on how bad you want it - must take NBME and get yourself in a Live lecture review class at the very least. Dont worry about dad's wallet - if that's a prob - take out a loan. Theres no going back now.

Check out http://www.falconreviews.com/v3/live....html#upcoming

Best of luck.

Nope! I did not.
Honestly,I did not know that I had to take an NBME.
Ours is the first batch passing out here,so no seniors,no guidance.
I will be taking one soon as advised by Falcon reviews.
I will be taking their course next year, because, this year I wanna attempt
My country exams.

You already have pretty Solid advice.............as far as prep is concerned?

In terms of monetary advice..........I want to say....

Find some job in your own country...........and earn something and help your dad out...........

I mean an in every country, docs are paid as much that they can save enough to give any exam after a few months of working
and is you are not a doc yet,,,,,,,you should graduate before giving another attempt......
