Hi Geetha,

I am sorry for u.But ur score is not too bad either. If you score good in step 2 and do all the other things right(like USCE,LORS),I think you have a fair chance for FM,Psychiatry,Paeds and even IM.

Try to gain some USCE and find some contacts who can recommend u.I wish u all the best

but this seems like a major set back. i am not sure which universities would accept to interview me with such a score. are there students still getting into residency with a low score ? everybody I know have a score of high 90s. Where do I even stand among them ?

I am not too sure of university programs,,but I believe that ur score is good enough for community programs. But step 2 is also important. If u score good in that,,this loss can be covered

Depends on your goal, where did you get your medical degree ? I know people from all over the world getting score from 85 up to 99 and they get really good programs,

For example, i know one who scored 87 and 89 ( step 1 and 2 ) and he did get into IM on chicago... So Pretty much you are in good chances. Basically what you have to do is get LORS and USCE and you are good to go... btw, Focus on your step 2.

Oh btw, 209/87 is not as bad as you think... It may require a little more effort on the step 2 to get above 90, but that's something you can definitely get for sure... =) So dont worry,, just go for it.

Hey Geeta.

I got a 211 on step 1. I thought the same that I wouldnt get an interview for the residency of my choice.

I'm also an IMG - took my step 2ck - got a 246/99 and great LORs and clinical rotations in the As. Got interviews left and right! Including for ER positions but in the end decided on IM and got in residency of my choice.

your score is ABOVE 85% - you are GOOD! keep it moving honey and get that 99 on step 2! - forget what your friends get!

Thanks M.D.M.C. your word of encouragement means a lot to me.
I am trying to gain USCE through FMG portal. Do you thing its worth spending lots of money on the externship offered by companies like this ? And the clinics where I get to work don't seem to have affiliations with universities. so even if I plan to do externship, where do you suggest me to do it ? Please reply

Hey Geeta

From what I have heard and experienced through internship and from my program director as well as many other attendings from SUNY Downstate, Flushing Hosp, NYHQ etc - Externships/observorships are worthless... thats the word on the street and from reliable sources - they dont hold much weight - ESP if not affiliated with a University Hospital. One thing that might work is if you get the externship and by luck you get to round with either the program director or the chairman of the specialty you're trying to get into (rarely does this happen) - and if so, the only good thing would be a recommendation letter regarding your performance - but even that will be a limited recommendation since, you are still considered a liability and they wont let you touch a patient - no procedures, no patient contact, no physical exams - all you do is observe and at the best ask the right questions to new admits in filling out H&Ps in regards to patient chief complaints.

giving your assistance to a local private doctor's group is equally effective - but none hold as much weight as Step 1>Step 2CK>Clinical Clerkships>Letter of Recommendations (in that order of significance)

hope this helps
