Default nervous breakdown

Oh God!
I am having a nervous breakdown ... I have this feeling that chosing USMLE was the wrong decision(I am an IMG )..

My batch-mate who recently took usmle exam told me that its very very tough and since then i am second guessing my decision...

I am still in the beginning phase of my studies its only been a week or so....

Is USMLE that tough??? Should i quit this???? Or should i go for it?????

It has always been my dream to settle in USA but since I am an IMG matching into residencies will be all the more tough.....

What should i do???

I haven't tested yet. Even I have heard a lot of people say that the exam was very tough, new pool, CK content etc. And I have been feeling worried too.

But I have realised that many of them got scores similar to the NBME's.

I am not saying that they are posting wrong info. or something. Maybe the really difficult part was not graded. It could be anything.

The main thing here is your scores will be about the same as nbme.

We are always scared of the unknown. Here we will know the range of our scores after NBME. So no reason to be scared or worried.

I think it doesn't matter if someone is average, below average or above. We are all learning. Never ever doubt yourself nor do anytime fully be confident that you know everything.

Don't mean to lecture, I am telling this to myself too.

You are probably right....But I am still you know a bit nervous thinking what if I fill up the form and my nbme are not good then what will I do???

And if at all I clear all the exams then matching will yet again be a Herculean task coz i am an IMG without any LORs from American doctors and no research work ..

So was just thinking about all this stuff...

Well, in that case you need to sit and strongly assess if you've made the right decision.

Scores are definitely important (perhaps the 1st 2 important criteria they look at) but so are observerships/externships and US LORs. You can obtain these in the US but keep in mind that each externship/observership costs money (not just the travel expenses, but also the accommodation, food and pretty much everything else.)

So if you have your finances in order, then I'd say go for it.

This exam is tough for pretty much everyone and the only way to getting around that fact is to study as hard as possible. You mentioned you were an average student, which is absolutely fine and many students preparing for this exam are "average" students. What counts though is if you can sit >8 hrs a day and study "smart" (cross-integration of concepts across all the subjects tests in Step 1 etc)
