Unhappy I am Shattered, I failed Step 1

I just received my step1 result. I failed 187/74.
I've lost all hope.
I've been going thru a tough time for so long. I somehow managed to give the step. It was my only hope.
I am shattered. I don know what to do.
What should I do now.
Do I have any chance of getting into residency? or should I just quit and do something else.

Im so sorry to hear this, and of course is not the end of the world... you will take the exam again and you will score great!... You will get Programs/Interview etc... just focus! =)

Please take a look at this Video it will give you some point of view about this process... In the same way, Remember we are not test takers, we are Doctors... USMLE Step 1 doesnt defines you as Good/bad doctor,,, Is just measure the ability to take exam...

Some cases, Low score are worse than Failed the usmle step 1 and take it again and score above 90+... so Be calm.. take days off... if you want take a month without thinking on this... just RELAX and next month start again,,, so you can take the exam by the end of the year or so,,, you got some point on your favor, "YOu already know the system and how the exam it is... in real life" so take that for you and great things will comes....

Here a few phrases maybe can work with you... im a believer, and NO "Justin Bieber" I hope that makes you laugh a bit =) humor sense... <> i believe in GOD... =)

"Effort and desire to compete in spite of our circumstances honor God and inspires people"

"Often what you think is one of your greatest defeat or challenges is something that God is using to give you more blessing and influences than you ever Imagine"

On a bright note, its better not to marry a person who lets go so easily (over an exam), so someone up there is looking out for you!

Sorry to hear this; but two things: one, you have the chance to bounce back with your second shot at the exam and get a way better score. I don't know much but I've heard of people who have got residencies after failing their first try...and two, it made you realize that that person you were going to spend the rest of your life with did not love you. Don't feel its the end of the road, take some time off, you'll get over this emotionally; get on track and come back stronger. I hope everything goes well for you.

It was resported as "No attend", so it wont count as a Real attempt, in that case you are free. Dont worry about it... for ECFMG or NBME you have just failed 1 time, the other one dont count. ( because you missed, you didnt take it )

Btw, you look Overwhelming and that's understandable but please TAKE a break! Go to your parents house, buy so ice cream and take it easy... We will be here when you get off the break! =) in order to overcome this you need that break =) keep that in mind... and comeback with all the positive energy! =)

I wish there was a huge faces here, but a big hug for you! =) take care...

Honestly it is harder than if you do by the first attempt, because there are some hospital which in they requirements set "Pass Step 1 with first attempt" but again... You will get the residency because they are just few hospital with that, the normal requirements are "score above 200+" "Usce" "LoR" etc.. and some others are mor strict asking score above 230+ etc etc...

I don't know where i read, but they really recommend to go for step 1 again, because the chances are pretty low to fail again,, compare to those who do the same thing that you want to do, instead give a try to the CS which is easier ( for IMG i guess ) and in fact its funny =) ... According to what i know and how i deal with patients in real life =) .. Its something serious but relaxing and fresh... i like it...

So My recommendation, go for CS if you want to take a break, if not, take your break and go back for FA... i did take a break back to December/ January and i did forget a lot of things of FA... so what im saying is... taking a long break from FA/Step 1 its not recommendable because you could start forgetting a lot of things .. that later on will take more time to take it back.. =)

I know its hard... but this is not a failed in Life, its just a test =) You are better than that for sure... =)

No i don't think that's such a good idea cuz even if u do gain a couple of points, passing on the margin is much worse than failing. When you fail, you are able to try again n the second time you shud try to get a 99% cuz some residency directors see ur good score on second attempt n they overlook ur failed attempt..

Default really sorry!

Hi Alpana,

I feel really sorry for you! Please hold yourself together and stay strong. Things might look dismal right now, but please believe that the Almighty might have a more serious and different plan from what you have chosen. Maintain the faith.

As far as your studying goes, I agree with the people who have commented before me. I think it is a fair option to take time off for a while and go back to Step1 as it might give you the best shot at a good score.

About residencies, I'm sure there is a chance, you have to work on other aspects of your CV. That should seal the deal. You might not get into a top program, but I'm sure you will get a decent one.

About the boyfriend issue - He doesn't deserve one bit of your attention. He was a jerk, and him getting out of your life is probably the best thing to happen to you now.

All the very best. May God bless you with strength and focus.

hey Alpana!!!
sorry to hear about the result.....first the bad part----you failed
now the good parts-----
1. you didnt pass with low score so you have chance to improve
2.this failed test got you rid of some A-hole bf of yours(sorry for the word but he deserves it) who didnt deserve you as for him marriage is a deal n not love. so be thankful to God for showing u his true face.

you can NOT give up bcoz this test will never make u a bad doctor. this is only a stepping stone. one of my friend failed 2 or 3 times n he is a nphrologist in Dallas making 180 grands an year.

you dont need to give up.i understand u naturally feel sad but all u need is a friendly hug.dont worry.....stratagise ur next attempt n plan properly. YOU WILL DO WELL....email me anytime u need help or advice at mahajankapil@hotmail.com...good luck n God bless you.

and yes----no point in recheck

Hey alpana, Kaplan is really good for concepts...i havent given the exam yet (just 8 more days) but it really did help me in developing concepts so ya i think u shud do that with the videos BUT---> Right now u NEED to relax and take some time off plz because ur under alot of stress ryt now and i can understand that. You need to find peace of mind then u can start ur studies and form a study strategy...
Basically everyone uses Kaplan+First Aid+Usmle World...search this site for other's who have given the exam and who got 99% and read about their experience and advice and u will understand it all more.
And don't despair we are all here to help! All the Best n may God brighten ur future

Default Better day

Hey don you worry , just take a deep breath and then think about your priorities , I strongly suggest tat one shold not entange professional and personal life . No doubt you gave a good effort , no one can take that away from you . One question though , have expectations taken a toll on you ? Perhaps if the answer is affirmative than think how much of negation has it bought upon your efforts . And dont worry about boy friends , they are plenty , a dime a dozen , but a good doctor is one in a 10o grand , take a vacation and get back positive to this forum .
Each one here wishes you a very positive life ahead .
Live free and turn right.

Hey alpana,
sorry to hear that.
Its quite understandable that you must be feeling very distraught right now.
But firstly, you need to calm down. And work a strategy for the future.
And at the risk of sounding insensitive, its better than getting stuck with a poor score.
As for writing CK, why don't you just write Step1 again, considering you ve just read it and it would be fresh in your mind.If you lose touch, it will be like starting from the scratch, especially cos those subjects are so darn volatile! Do think about it.
Take a little break, stop being hard on yourself. And bounce back with a vengeance. Nobody makes it to the top without facing an occasional failure.
As for the BF bit,my scumbag of ex bf screwed things up during a tough academic phase of my life.
And now,Im glad he did. Such men/women aren't worth it.
Chin up, cheer up and be brave.
All the best.

Default Life is beautiful ! Don't give up

A partner in life can help you succeed in life or destroy you by their actions. A life partner than doesn't deserve you should be erased from the equation. Don't look back, it is time to regroup and make a new study plan that is feasible. Try to disconnect for a few days from studying. Do something that makes you happy for a few days and then get back on the horse

Calm down, mate.
Scroll up.
And wipe the sweat off.
Its not the end of the world.Nothing is.
You can always bounce back. Always.

Never take such a big decision when you feel depressed.... what doesn't kill you, make you stronger.. don't forget that

Ya i think u mean ppl who want to persue surgery...i dont know much about it but there are many residencies out there that take ppl in the 80s even....the key is to never give up n if u really want it u can get it. I think ur still thinking about wat that boy sd n u dont need to blv him hez just being a jerk.
If i was in ur place i wud be even more diligant and i wud not rest until i prove this dumb boy wrong...but that's just me.....

What did you study before? What materials did you use? Etc.

I think you had serious flaws in your study methods / materials used! Tell us what you used so that we can guide you better.

Golden rule rules- Don't make promises when happy, don't take decisions when sad/ angry.
Do whatever you want to do, but you shouldn't decide right now.

As for IMG not matching with 99, I also know of an IMG with 85/95 doing IM.
And another with 85/88 doing Anesthesia. Only cos they didn't give up.
So you can't really generalize. That will only bog you down.

I've been going thru a tough time for so long. I somehow managed to give the step. It was my only hope.
I am shattered. I don know what to do.
What should I do now.
Do I have any chance of getting into residency? or should I just quit and do something else.
I have friends with Multiple failures who got matched to Path, IM and Surgery. IM is the thing to apply dont stress explain thin in ur CV
