Arrow Disappointing end to a LOT of Hard work!

hey guys,

First off don't get me wrong, I'm thankful that I passed, but I still believe that my score does not reflect nearly the amount of clinical knowledge that I have. See my problem has always been Test Taking Anxiety and it showed as I needed to use the restroom numerous times, even 2ice during 2 blocks (that's another biggie that might have affected my score). Unfortunately for me it seems like I've got a long uphill road ahead of me. Secondly, I would advise everyone who has not taken the Step 1 yet to DRILL IT INTO YOUR BRAIN NOT TO DOUBLE GUESS YOURSELVES UNLESS YOU'RE 2000% SURE YOU'RE WRONG....I think that is what doomed me on this exam, but I'm going to go ahead and get it rechecked anyways.

know your physiology and pathology well, especially Goljan and Kaplan physio if you can get to it. Pharm, Micro and the smaller subjects FA is MORE than enough.

Lastly, there's a lot of people who recommend the more Qs the better, but I think the Quality of Qs and the thought process is more important. Do nbmes early on, even though I didn't and wasn't anywhere near my Last NBME score.

I had a lot of questions which were Nitpicky in details especially in genetics, required a good understanding of a lot of mechanisms and how things work on a cellular level, even some genes that I have failed to find in Kaplan and FA. Unfortunately, most of the things I got required a very thorough read of the actual Textbooks which is kind of what I was afraid of. But nonetheless, I passed, and I shall work even harder for the step 2.

UW = 72
UWSA 1 = 200 (1.5 months prior)
nbme 7 = 211 (10 days prior)
nbme 12 = 215 (7 days prior)

Actual score = 200/83

To be honest I'm very stressed after getting this score, I don't even know where to begin. Q for some of the Veterans, what kind of residencies can I hope for with this score? Can I at least hope for Internal Med?

Last but not least, thanks guys for all the support and help that I got on this Forum ...

Goodluck to everyone!

Stop worrying Doc and dive into the Step 2 preparations with great hope and confidence.
I can assure you there are many who would die to get a score like yours. Step 1 is not the 'only' thing that matters to get into a residency. Try and improve in the other parameters. So, study study study till your brains pop out of your ears and I can assure you, you will not be disappointed at all.

Well, if u really have the exam anxiety, then this a big problem. I started my exam with sever anxiety and was totally lost in the first 2 blocks. I advice u to take the pre-test exam in your prometric center shortly before ur actual exam date. Even it will cost u extra money but it helps a lot to relief anxiety in the real exam. Good luck in step 2.

Default Dont Worry be Happy!!

First of all i would like to congratulate you for passing the dreaded exam!! Kudos!!! There are many others who score even less than you have a a few unfortunate ones who dont even make it not ONLY because of their lack of knowledge but due to MANY other factors!

Your focus should be entirely on your step 2! Dont limit your self as far as prep time is concerned! Try to make your weaker areas your strength and the stonger ones impeccable!

As far as getting a residency is concerned specialities like Paeds. IM/Paeds, Family Med are the less competitive ones with improved performance in the rest of the exams you can practically think of getting a residency! Further you can boost your prospects and make your case even stronger by doing researches, observerships etc. If you manage to impress an attending at an IM prog or a PD at your observership you can definitely think of matching there! I would recommend you to look for an observership in a community or a community affiliaed university programme just to be more practical!

You are through the first part of your journey have faith and you will reach the other end with hard work and determination!

PS: Special thanks to you for posting your exam experience! Many who post usually do so only if they have high scores! But you have definitely done others, who are yet to take the exam, some wonders!
