Smile My step 1 exam day experience!!

First off, this is not a detailed post of my prep and etc. I will write one of those when I finish my vacation. This is just my brief summary of the step 1 exam itself. I took it yesterday, and I gotta say I am torn because on one hand I feel like it was the worst exam Ive taken so far, but on the other hand, during the exam itself I felt very comfortable (exactly like as if I was doing another NBME).

Here are my pointers for future test takers:

- Its all about conepts. period. I know that it must be frustrating for everyone to say the exact same sentence but once u finish step 1 u will understand why. To elaborate a bit, I mean that even if I would have memorized first aid or kaplan books or u name it, the step 1 people always find a way to ask you the exact same question u have read a million times on UW or KaplanQ and ask you something u probably never have heard of. This is not one of those regurgitate med school questions. I think the best correlation to the feeling I have now is those Q's u read on NBME's for example, where you know exactly what they want, u know the exact disorder/disease but when it comes to the answer choices u are always between 2, and then u just click one and move on.
- If I would have studied 2 more weeks/months/years I dont think it would really play a difference. My exam had maybe 25% straight forward questions (the ones where u either know the answer or u dont. For ex. which artery this? or which arch that? or which gene? etc) The rest are Q's were u are either familiar with the process and can deduct the answer or are familiar with the answers and can deduct the odd one out. Study as much time as you need to learn the material but not memorize it. I believe that 2-3 weeks of cramming is more than enough time to memorize the important parts of FA.
- Its all the same. What i mean by this is that there is no possible good way to divide the patho/phys/pharm/biost/etc ratios. Listen the exam is testing u on all of them so study all of them equally as good. I made a huge mistake thinking that biostat or psych wasnt that important but I am 100% sure that I messed up big on those during the exam. The weaknesses u have always come to bite u in the ass.
- Dont freak out. Oh boy is this easy to say but soooo hard to do. I was going crazy the final weeks, less sleep, palpitations, etc. The reason for the good old "freak out" is the fact that u think they will find all of the small details that u keep on forgetting and question u one those. NOT TRUE. lets say there are 25 rare diseases or 50 specific details u cant remember, DONT WORRY. There is a 90% chance u wont be tested on them. I definately had alot of these kind of low yield details (tumors histo, biochem!, parasites, helminths, bunyaviruses, and the list goes on and on). GOT 2 IN THE WHOLE EXAM.

To sum up my "brief" review, I have to say that I feel like crap, I cant say if I did good or bad. I would say I knew 35% straight up Q's, deducted 20% from the answer choices, narrowed down to 2 options and just choice the prettiest one for 30%, and bluntly guessed 15%.
But to be honest I feel the EXACT same way I did whenever I did the NBME's. When I did nbme 7 before I clicked to see my score I believed I didnt get more than 200, got 235! And it was worse for nbme 12, I truly begged to get over 200 and it turned out to be 228. So I have my hope still and pray to God that I did well. I have to go rest now and forget about this as much as I can cause i will literally go nuts waiting for my results.

I will respond to any questions as soon as I can. Good luck to u all and may God be with you.

So this is what I learned from your post:

Exam is a coin toss between 2 close choices, if your luck favors you.. you get the right side..

Dont worry, you will do fine! People always say they feel like absolute crap, but it turns out they did well.

I for am one who is just like you.. narrow it down to 2 choices and end up picking the wrong one! God help me during the real thing!

Whenever you are done resting, would you advise me where to study Gross Anatomy from ? I kinda feel kaplan is too sumarised..From whta you have seen (exam / nbme/ qbanks ) should i just stick to it or i must study from another resource too ? It is really BUGGING me off

@ patelmd: Dont take my words to heart. I did have cases where it was kin of a coin toss but I didnt just pick, I chose the one i thought fit best. Plus people usually say that after the exam u remember the worst parts only. So i may be emphasizing a bit too much on my experience

@ rulz: thanks alot! I really hope ur right

@ hope007: Kaplan neuroanatomy is more than sufficient (esp the pics), gross anatomy Q's in the exam were very basic (most were limb nerve lesions, most were embryo (but collectively were still a very little part of my exam), one or two were chose the artery Q's (which were not in kaplan). But I think that a kaplan read parallel with FA (adding some notes) is more than enough. I read kaplan once and FA many times and felt very comfortable with the anatomy Q's (except those 2 I mentioned with the arteries)

Can you tell us your other stats?

Ex. UWorld %, Other NBME Form scores etc?

I just want a comparison of what I can expect...

Hi! First of all, thanks for telling your experience! I wish I was done with step1 already...
Have you written a thread telling us about your prep? If yes please give me the link, I'd love to read it!
I think your NBME scores predict a score around 230, so I'm sure you did great! Good luck

Actually, and sadly, I only scored 221/94. I was a bit shocked but I realized it was behavioral that took my score way down.

Hi! Gongratulations! that is still a very good score. And dont forget, they are forced to look at three digit scores now cause the two digit scores are not reported anymore!
i'd still love to hear about your prep, so if you ever have time I'd be very grateful!
