Star aisakya Exam Day Experience

I did my exam on 18th of July. I would be mostly writing about the my exam experience and not the way I prepared it. Because I feel the way anyone prepares for the exam is way more personalized to his capacity and goals.

When I confirmed my exam appointment 7 days prior on Prometric, the real feeling of an exam really sunk in and I started to feel nervous. Till now I was studying naturally but after that I started to panic. I was forgetting more and more which I don’t know was true or not. So, I decided to change my plan and set my focus to first aid. I did try to complete it but I didn't succeed, anyways It was good thing to try. Also 3 days before, I practiced free 150 questions, did bad on them and again got depressed. But it was not a bad move at all, I nearly got 8-9 questions from them, 2 were exactly the same, rest were asking the same concepts. So I seriously advise you all to do it but try not to judge yourself on them as the questions are relatively different from uworld and it may take one time to adjust to it. As I didn’t do any NBME, so this was the closest I can get to simulate real exam experience. Also, the orientation part was so useful, helped me gain extra 14 minutes of break time. All I did was to check whether headphones were working fine or not and I was good to go.

Last day before the exam I did nothing special, studied for two or three hours. Went to grocery store to buy stuffs. Bought some mineral water (you don’t need it, Prometric center provides cool water), some chips, some bananas, chocolates and red bull. Around 10 pm, I packed all my stuff and double check them and went to sleep praying. Sleep didn’t come to me until 2 o’clock but at last I was able to get 4 and half hour sleep. Took a warm shower and I was ready to go.

I reached the centre around 8:45 am, made me a little nervous as I was planning to reach the center half an hour early. But there was some diversion in traffic due to construction, so make sure, u know well that there are not major glitches. Anyways after arriving at center, I was given a locker and was told to put all my stuff into that except scheduling permit and identification card. No pen, no water, nothing extra is allowed inside the room. After the proper verification they gave my two card boards and two markers and I was finally allowed to sit in my cabin. It was quite isolated which was nice. I began my exam after taking the time to settle all the things. Make sure you do that and just don't type the CIN no. right away because once you have entered it, clock will start ticking.

Exam was quite doable, took break each time after 2nd block. 4th block was the hardest for me as I thought I am not quite hungry but midway during it my stomach pangs were making me dizzy. Otherwise all blocks went fine, thanks to sips of redbull. Did go to bathroom in each break and did drink some water too. Helped me relax, but one can plan accordingly. Also, when I started fresh block I shivered in the beginning, I don’t know whether it was just cold or some jitters. So make sure u r comfortable enough. Also, one important advice of all, don’t try to move your legs too much, as one girl sitting opposite to me had her computer turned off. Thank god it was only her desktop but you never know.

As for the exam, I marked 10-12 questions in each block even if I have the tiniest bit of doubt. It did help me a lot, as I was able to look into the question with a fresh perspective and was able to correct some easy questions. Remember your mind tends to get bit monotonous in later parts of exam and u won’t be able to save more time, so if u do follow my strategy of double tap (thanks to zombieland movie), try to minimize the no. of marked questions in later blocks.

I was able to save 7 minutes from my break, I was pretty happy the way my exam went. I was hoping for something worse but thanks to God, it went all good. In the end I want to thank you all for helping, I did learn something here and for that it was my pleasure to contribute here.

Any questions would be most welcome.

Hi, aisakya, thanks for sharing. How long did it take you to prepare? Did you work while studying?

I don't the remember the exact distribution, but I think we tend to remember those questions which we find difficult, so it can be misleading. Overall the difficulty level was much easier than uworld and plain simple too. I think the difficulty level was similar to free 150 questions, I don't know about nbme.

@nerves, I am going to write about the questions which I found difficult. There were questions on immunology like one of bare lymphocyte syndrome(asking mechanism), Th1/Th2 switch mechanisms, delayed type of hypersensitivity. Rest was relatively easy. Anatomy questions were little odd, as I got questions asking the same thing twice two times. One was about Intercostal artery and nerves relationship and other was asking about the area of origin of seizures in brain map specifying certain aura conditions. They did ask me all about genetics, like hardy weinberg principle, Rflp, and usual mode of inheritance. So learn as many as concepts and clear your doubts, because then will hit you double on your Achilles. If you think you don't know any topic well, then go for it all the way.

@usluipek, I was not working at the time of studying. Started preparing for it in march. I gave 5-6 hours each day on avg. someday more, someday less.

@Bandar, best of luck, come with flying colors.

@ Manoj, u have all the time in world. If u think u study well with a partner then u should look for it...but make sure u are comfortable first. Just don't try something because u have heard of someone doing it.
I didn't have a study partner as I was comfortable studying alone. But I did ask all my friends about their experiences and tried to learn as many as things possible.

Congrats on taking your test! How are you handling the waiting until your score comes out? I took mine on the 16th, so we'll probably get our scores the same time. Even though i am trying not to think about it...it's a lot of thinking about questions I got wrong and nail biting going on lol.

Default How to revise RR

Sorry for being away from the topic but i am really tense here.Have my step on 25th august and currently i am revising FA.Have completed UW with 64 %.my main worry is am not getting time to revise Goljan . I have read it twice but the last read was in march and i dont know how much i have retained. How to go about it as path is a vvv imp subject and without revision i might not recall everything.I had listened to audios in december. What should i do?How should i take out time to read RR again or i am better off just sticking to FA and my path UW notes now or listen to audios... Suggestion plzzzzzzz

Everybody study differently. I can't stress it enough but its not the multiple revisions that count but the ability to master your weaknesses. Trust me, clear your doubts, master the concepts and you will be conquering step 1. When you are revising, focus on your weak points, go an extra step, try to learn something not just remember it.

As for Goljan, wasn't able to complete it in first place so can't give any advice on revision. I wanted to revise the completed portion but was able to do only first 10-12 chapters. In the end I was doing only those topics which I thought was imp or I was forgetting. Its a very good book but not that essential for usmle exam to require revision; Goljan audio and FA are enough for pathology.

Congrats to you too. I am not worrying much as it's not in my hands now anymore.
Btw I am just enjoying the feeling of completing step 1. The thought of wrong questions do make me feel bad but can't do anything, can we? Let's hope for the best.

@Laura best of luck for the result.

@doctordexter: Please don't ask me about how to study for step 1. I won't be able to offer you any good. Each one of us are different and so we all study differently. All I can do is to share my experiences and see if it benefits you.
I was unable to revise kaplan and FA wholly in first place. I wanted to do it at least once but somehow I didn't feel like doing it. I would advise you to assess your comfort level through uworld and nbme and try to remove your weakness afterwards. That's all I have to say.

@ Manoj: yeah maybe..I was too discussing my progress with my friend and it sure helped me.

@drciri: best of luck.

Default all the beest for your results!

I am a medical graduate from Nepal , plan to take step 1 on Jan 31 2012. I have finished a reading of Kaplan notes with the videos of all the required subjects except Pathology for which i studied Goljan and also listen to his audios. I think my weak subject is Biochemistry especially the cytogenetics and the molecular biology and the immunology part. For now i am revising the Kalplan note books and am having a hard time remember all the points, i think what we study in the notes, and most of the time the questions are asked in such a way that even if we had studied that part , it becomes difficult to answer that Question. The Kaplan videos are awesome and saw them all once, do you think that i should listen to them once more as i have only 3 months in hands before i take step 1. I plan to take U world in November for 2 months and NBME in last week to brush the revision and build in some confidence before i take the exams finally. Its stressful to through revisions also. Tell me the high yield topics from the subjects that you know. Have your say at the plan that i have made for the next 3 months
-Starting solving Q world along with lecture notes and First Aid
-Take NMBE 2 weeks prior to the test or may be a week prior
-Take step 1 on 31st Jan 2012
-wait for the results for 4 weeks in between i will read step 2 CK books
-if the results are good take Step 2 CK in June
Step 2 CS in July
Do reply to this thread as your advise/suggestion will surely motivated me as it has done after reading your post! Thank you for posting it. All the best to you for step 2 , i am sure you will come out with flying colors!
Fahad

@ Fahad, You are doing great. I am no expert just by posting something about my experience. In my opinion you are on right track. I'll advise you to complete first aid before starting uworld as you will learn the wrong questions beforehand. Also, I didn't do much of Kaplan videos, so won't be able to offer some help there. If you have enough n that's lots of enough time in the world, then only I would suggest to re-watch it. If you haven't watch it once then I would suggest you to take picture snaps through vlc player of imp slides so that you'd able to revise imp ones, also I hope you are watching videos around 2x speed. Thanks.

I thought I should post my scores here as I forgot to post them, this way you guys will be able to correlate more of my experience.

uworld score: 75%(random and timed)
uwsa1: 260
step 1: 246( I was expecting a little higher but fair enough, step 2 is yet to come.)
