Show Teeth Got 213/90 and a New baby (My Step 1 Experience)

I received my score last Wednesday but I haven't had a chance to sit and write the new thread. I have a pediatrics test on Friday so things are a little crazy.

I'm writing this because all the 99ers write their experience and no one else does. I am very proud of my score for the following reasons:

I studied max 5 hours a day.
I'm married and when I started studying I had a 4 month old baby which I breastfed (on demand) all the way through my studying process.
I watched the kaplan videos and made notes but never read the Kaplan lecture notes themselves. I used them as a resource if I didn't understand something.
I went over First Aid twice.
I studied from January 24th until June 24th.

My score: 213/90

Thanks to everyone on this forum!

Yes I think that UW is very important. I never did the kaplan bank so I can't tell you. But I can tell you that most of the questions on the step are more straight forward than UW.

Wink Congratulations!

Dr. Laura, congratulations on your score! I think many of us on this forum were also as anxious as you for that score and thank God you've aced it!

I really admire you for doing it in a nice, classic way, having to provide for a family and a brand new baby. You've done an amazing job and I congratulate you for it.

I wish you the best of luck on all your future endeavors.

You'll be missed on this side of the forum. GodBless.

I started January 24th, watching the Kaplan videos. In February I started UW but I did 1 block a week. Once I finished the videos I started reading FA and did 1 block of questions a day. I was able to finish FA by the end of May and I read it a second time. I finished UW once and did 30% of it again... I'm planning on getting into ob/gyn and I've heard that 90 is a good score to get in. I'm a US citizen IMG so that will help me also. I don't know about IM but I imagine that with a 90 you can get into programs. I hope to do better on step 2 CK, I'll start studying for that in June of next year because I'm still finishing medical school. My son will be 2 by then and it'll be a little easier to study. :sorry:

Good luck to you!

If there was one thing I would do different it would be to go over FA more times... FA is the most important thing, once you understand everything obviously. I wish I could've read it 10 times.

Hi Dr Laura,

Can you please tell me what was your UW score? Did you do any NBME? Thanks again for sharing your experience!

My UW score is not any good to you because I started doing it too early and so it was VERY bad at the beginning. Towards the end I was always around 75% and the second time around I was always over 80 - 85%.

UWSA 1 - 194
UWSA 2 - 223
NBME 5 - 196
NBME 11 - 210
NBME 7 - 210

I'm still in medical school so I haven't done any observerships. I wouldn't know about residency because all I've done is step 1 but from what I've heard on here, USCE is always good. I don't think it's a "requirement" but it obviously looks good on your CV.

I think that it's better to complete 1 and if you have time to do both then great, but know 1 really well. I never did Kaplan but it seems to me that everyone prefers UW. I LOVED it and learned a lot by doing questions. I think one should start doing questions right away. Even if you only do 1 block a week and then revise it during the week, you will get so much from it.

Thank you very much for your posting. I really like to know how many time did you do Bank? As I only have 4 hours of day to study.
I started in February and stopped at the end of June...

Honestly, I felt that my base was good. I do well (not great) in medical school. But when I took my first NBME I got a 194. In fact when I took my first assessment it was UWSA 1 and I got 194 and those usually over shoot your score so I wasn't even passing. I REALLY tried to learn from UW and the questions. I did questions almost from the beginning. FA FA FA FA!!!! That's the key... You have to be able to read the question and KNOW where in FA it was. If I had 1 more month to go over FA another time or maybe 2 I'm sure I would have gotten over 230. I made silly mistakes about things I knew. I believe that you must study well, not hard.

No, I watched the videos until about April but I didn't read the kaplan lecture notes unless I didn't understand something. I made notes from the videos in there as well. Then once I finished that I went over FA twice... UW since Feb.
