Fire Thread Took the Exam yesterday - Nov, 17 - 2014

Hi Everybody!

Yesterday - November 17 – 2014 I took that God Damn USMLE Step 1 – unbelievable that it is hopefully over, unfortunately – I was informed about not disseminating any information - even now I could remember all questions and could reproduce them in my mind:

I decided to post my experience now – because I know myself – if I could possible fail – I wouldn’t write a single word, and if luckily passed – everything I would write would be biased, adapted, distorted …

But general picture of my impressions are following:

First of all I must to say that Each of us have the ability and potential do very well on this Exam – it is very Fair – not such Evil Exam as people describe – I even had questions with 2 lines, I think there are about 5-10% of questions which you answer with 100% confidence – within a 5 seconds, others are not lengthy or difficult – and you don’t need to read – Golgan to answer these question – Pathoma itself is more than enough – personally from Golgan I only read Urinary Incontinency topic a little paragraph – and that is it. I didn’t had a single WTF – questions – where you totally lost and don’t know what was actually asked – contrary I had couple of meaningful questions – you will UNDERSTAND what was asked at least from second slow reading – if time would be enough – I think I would be able to come to better conclusions. About 10% question – you pick the answers because other answer choices are less likely. 50% questions – “yes, I remember – it should be this” and about 30% - educational guess with your subconscious mind. I selected only 1 question – without fully reading understanding the meaning due to rush for the last 4 minutes seconds on 4th block – when I was on question 39 – it would require more conceptual approach with all this up and down arrows - time is the FIRST Enemy – I wasn’t able to go back and review questions I surprise how people finish the block with 10-12 minutes left – in addition I know if I change answer I will got it wrong. By the way the Anatomy was not so bad as people say – yes some question were confusing – but most of them were clear.

I think – I still don’t understand Human Physiology – because I don’t know what has happened with me the night before exam – that day I specifically woke up early, did some running on treadmill and walked about 8 km till Puget Sound Beach – went to sleep around 10 pm and woke up close to 12 am – and couldn’t sleep till 3 am, periodically looked to my Pharmacology notices to distract my myself and this is where I always mess up drugs name - then again fall to sleep till 4 am and could sleep at all – took shower and finished my breakfast about 5-30, got dressed and again tried to sleep till 7 am but I couldn’t – before I tried several times Melatonin tablets 5mg – but they used to keep me drowsy and malfunction till next day noon – so I didn’t take them – but I think it put me in stress in beginning and first two blocks – I needed to read questions couple times – brain fog has disappeared after bottle of Flappuchino ( if I have spelled it right) and Monster – I took breaks after each block – got out, did push-ups, stretches and washed my head each time before coming back to start next block it helped a lot to release the tension accumulated at the end of each block – I didn’t eat any lunches till finished exam and came home around 7 pm – Emotion and Happiness moments very so high and kept me full – that I finally took the Test!

Question banks I used –

USMLE Rx – about a year ago when I did with FA – first read – culminating predicted score was 212
Kaplan Q bank – 1st route 65% second 80% - for the last 6 month - the hardest ever Q-bank – actually some ABD questions were very close to Kaplan questions in approach – you guys know UW is not enough good on ABD [ Acid-Base Disturbances ] – questions.
UW – God Damn it 3 times through – 61% first time, 90 % was second time and 3rd time 88% - for the last 8 month time interval between each route about 2 month – I was alternating them between Kaplan and going through FA – cover to cover without interruption, chapter by chapter did 3 times followed by watching USMLE Express videos – periodically I believe each FA page was looked more than 20 times.

Kaplan Diagnostic 150 free – was 48% was in somewhere in May
Kaplan 1st Self-Assessment 8 hour – 65% - August 4
NBME 7 – in August 29 – 217
UWSA 1 and 2 in September first 2 weeks were 230 and 241
NBME 13 – 222 in September 19
NBME 15 – 228 in September 29
Kaplan 2nd Self Assessment 8 hour – 74% in October
USMLE Practice Session in Prometric Center – 88% - November 6,
NBME 16 a week before exam – 222
(Eventually, nothing has changed in NBME scores )
NBME 11 and 12 off-line – about 30 questions got wrong – but it was off-line, useless – no time was set.

How questions look – they look as UW and Kaplan – if you have time do them both.

Everything could happen - I still hope and pray that I haven’t failed the Test.

May Allah bless all of us!

Thanks man for sharing your experience and thoughts...It helps a lot to boost up my confidence and energy..

I need your opinion on some facts..

Was the practice session in pro-metric center useful?

Were there a lot of calculations/Images/heart sounds?

What you think about the adequacy of FA+UW?

You're welcome - I would say the Practice Session was useful in my case, because I didn't worried at all about organizational and logistical sites of the Exam - especially when I couldn't sleep day before exam - cut my confidence - I expected to perform less then I did - even I don't know yet score - I'm half happy - this journey is gonna be over soon. If, have a chance then go and take the Practice Session.

2 Heard Sounds, about 5-6 EKG images - I've tried to diagnose it by given CV - I don;t know if I got them correct

Bio-statistics were easier then UW Biostate Question about 5-6 - I also did 25$ Biostate - I was able to calculate all of them - because number I came to were among given options - hopefully they were correct.

FA and UW will cover 90% of the Exam - other 10% is I'm sure can be found through Google and WiKipedia

Congratulations man i think you aced the exam.

I took the test 3 weeks ago and my nbme scores were between 245-255. But i had terrible exam. I felt like it was way harder than nbme 16. Based on your experience i guess you will get 250+ because there are people in this forum who got 250+. I read their exam experience and they were totally shaken after the exam. They were talking about how hard the exam was( I am one of them lol). You seem pretty comfortable. Enjoy your time right now!! You deserved it!!

Thanks for encouragement - I hope your guesses to come true, it wouldn't be right to say I was enough comfortable - but all questions were doable if you could spent little more time - even experimental questions - I drew some schemes to organize given information and apply some logic - but each time I run out time for last 5-6 questions - with a need to manage them in 3-4 minutes, remember I had one question from page 237 FA -13 edition at last 5 question - I'm pretty sure - I could find the correct answer with 100% confidence - if this questions would be at the beginning the Block ....

What was horrible site of your exam? Specifically - what was difficult? Calculations were easier then I expected - I prevalently had pathophysiology questions - then Anatomy.

Just checked the https://iwa2.ecfmg.org/home.asp - Scheduling Permits are not available - so I'm in the system...
