Experiences step 1 experience 27 Oct 2014 (first try, IMG)

Hello everyone....I just got my result 2hrs ago!

first i would like to thank Allah for giving me the chance to give and succeed this exam.

And I would like to thank everyone in this great forum, which helped me a lot through my step 1 journey.

I am an IMG, I Started preparation on Nov first 2013. I thought in the beginning it will take 6 months to finish the prep, but I couldnít do it. It took me around 11.5 months!

Exam date: Monday 27 october 2014

Preparation & resources:
I started my preparation with Kaplan LN & videos.
Did it in this order: embryology, anatomy, neuroanatomy, histology, physiology, biochemistry, microbiology, immunology, pharma, pathoma, biostats & behavioral science.

After that I gave 1 month for first aid, with quick review of some Kaplan chapters that I felt I was weak on & annotated very few notes to FA with pencil so I can erase it later on if I want to.

Then I subscribed to Uworld for 2 months, I did 1 block daily(46 question) in timed, random, mixed mode, then annotating to FA. I extended for 1 more week so I can do the wrong questions. I didnít have time to go through the marked ones.

After that I did a quick read of FA with UW notes.

Last month before exam:
I did a quick read of FA with uw notes, then I took NBME 13 scored 230, after that I worked on my weak subjects according to NBME 13, then took NBME 7 scored 235, then took NBME 15 scored 239, revised FA especially weak subjects & topics, lastly took NBME 16 around 12 days before my exam & got 234, then last week I just kept on reading FA with uw notes.

Exam day:
It was really a tough and long exam. There were a lot of weird questions in my exam which you donít find the answer in Kaplan, uworld or fa!
The question stem was long for most of the questions.

I run out of time in one block which I solved the last 5 or 6 questions randomly without reading the question, I was really angry because I would have answered them correctly.

The exam center was having constructions outside with terrible noise which gave me a real headache while solving the questions. So I should have took earplugs, so please do take them with you!!!

3 days before my exam I didnít sleep well , I was a bit anxious.

In my opinion Kaplan, Uworld, FA, pathoma is a must especially for IMGs.

Uworld qbank: cumulative 67%
NBME 13 (22 sept): 230
NBME 7 (26 sept): 235
NBME 15 (2 oct): 239
NBME 16 (13 oct): 234
Real step 1 exam (27 oct 2014): 228

What I found through my preparation:

∑ Watching Kaplan videos and reading while watching is a nice way to understand and saves you time.
∑ Histology: watch videos only in very high speed around 1.35.
∑ Physiology: its concepts need understanding & to master them by doing many questions.
∑ Dr.Turco of biochemistry is amazing.
∑ I found micro Kaplan LN is a very dry notes, not helping in memorizing, but dr.Rubish videos are good, for those having difficulty memorizing you can use flashcards, CMMRS figures, sketchy micro, picmonic. and of course solving questions is the best way.
∑ I only did bacteria & viruses from Kaplan vid+LN, continued the rest from FA as first read.
∑ I did immunology from Kaplan +FA at the same time.

I was hoping for 230+, but alhamduliallah i passed it.

I wish the best of luck to all of you.

Help

Congratulations man!

You have proved to the World - that you can handle it and make it happen!
I have noticed the same phenomenon - your NBME scores were relatively higher then mine - but I took exam 2-days ago - but I didn't feel they were so lengthy or difficult - why is it so ? I'm in lethargy now - what if I actually didn't well - I want ask you some questions - let's Skype, don't worry I already took the Test - now it doesn't matter if we can share some our concerns !

thank you.

well for FA i did around 4 reads, i think the more you read and review FA definitely will benefit you in step 1.

for uworld i did it once, except for incorrect i did them twice. if i had time i would do the marked too!

pathoma i did it once, & if i had more time i would do it twice!

good luck in your preparation.
