Default STEP 1 - My 235 history

Hello everybody! I hope you all can find my experience useful.
I want to thank my family for supporting me and always helping me with an smile, to God for giving me the courage to go 'till the end and of course to the collective intelligence of the forum.
UWORLD qBank %: completed: 72%; avg: 80 %
Kaplan q Bank %: completed: 50; avg: 70 %
NBME Form 15 [Oct 13, 2014] : 550 - 239 (online)
NBME Form 16 [Oct 27, 2014] : 540 - 237 (online)
Exam [31 Oct, 2014]: 235

I begun my preparation on a Live lecture with Kaplan, at chicago from SEPT 2013 to DEC 2013. Lectures were good, but the books not really good. My first Kaplan assessment (the one they make you take when you begin) was HORRIBLE! it was the worst exam i took on my life! haha! i couldn't even complete it.

Anyway, after december i studied with the basic ground from Kaplan. I was waiting to get my eligibility period by March this year, (i begun the whole process by the beginning of february) but my school and the courier service i used made a huge delay. ECFMG got everything ready for me to take it on MAY-JUNE-JULY.

By that time, i was already studying for Step 2 cs & then Step 2 ck. I did it because i found them particularly easy (no kidding) and i thought: would i forget it? WORST IDEA EVER! by the time i received the ok to take the exam, it was already 3 months since i had last studied anything for step 1. I then started again reviewing my notes, but it all was kind of mixed :roll eyes: I had many important concepts already understood, however many topics that require memorization were almost gone from my brain. I then started reading for a month, tried the FA, but that freaking book just confused me more (i know, its the bible for step 1, but, well, just saying i don't find it helpful at all.)

By June I realized i was wasting time trying to read too many things so i did, what i should have done a month ago. RESET! I started again my Kap books, with my notes and the videos (just in case) one at the time, and it all started to come back to my mind. It was a really slow process but helped me to re-gain the confidence i was loosing.

After my first NBME i got particularly scared, since honestly i expected more. Then i thought i had to memorize all the random facts i didn't know SECOND WORST IDEA EVER. It is true, some topics require memorization, but freaking out just because of this topics is like shooting yourself on the feet. I spent the last 3 weeks studying material i never ever saw on the exam (the random memorization topics) instead of building more confidence on the topics i knew i had mastered.

On the day of the exam, I was on autopilot & found some bizarre questions. My memory is fading now, so don't be angry if i cannot recall the topics. But again, if i had only practiced my general principles more (as i did the 3 months prior) i think i could have done it better.

Anyway, a 235 is still a good score, so, My advice is: enjoy your preparation, remember your knowledge will definitively save someone one day. Don't lose your mind the last part of your prep and of course: believe in you. This exam is a conceptual exam, my error was to think i could master the concepts and memory. I have to accept we all have weak spots and mine is memory, so, i focused so much in improving it, that in the end i just left my strongest spot widely open. Still, I am glad if my mistakes could help someone and well, lets hope for the best.
