Default A 241 score experience , to those who scored low in NBMEs

Hey Guys , I want to share my experience with you particularly with those who scores low in NBMEs , I think my experience might help them and give them hope .

I was an average IMG students , I live in Iraq in which there was a civil war for years ( my studying years )and my basic science knowledge was nearly zero .

I was always dreaming of working in U.S and getting matched into internal medicine program there and you know all people around me said USMLE is very difficult exam and people who are smarter than u was not able to pass and all this **** , u know , people always try get u down .But I believe in myself and my abilities and I believe if someone else could do it so I can do it definitely and u can do it definitely it is a rule , we all are doctors and we are all smart enough to score high , off course there are individual variances , which will lead to variances in scores , but believe me we are all smart enough to ace it .

I started my preparation one year ago in September in Iraq , and it took me 14 months to prepare for the exam, this is because I was working as a resident doctor in one of Baghdad hospitals and studying at the same time so I had only average 5-6 hours per day to study which is not enough for an IMG .

My preparation material:
---------------------------------
Kaplan lecture note ( the whole seven books including pathology ) but I didn’t study histology
Kaplan videos 2010 ( for microbiology “not doing those of immunology” ) , pharma , behavioral sciences ,biochemistry , physiology , and neuroscience ).
pathoma videos only ( don’t be shocked )
Uworld offline
Qbook
1/3 of kaplan Qbank
Pre-Test -- Clinical Vignettes For The USMLE Step 1
Khans Medical Ethics 101
first aid for step one ( I did it for 3 -4 times )
All NBMEs forms including the old ones.
Uworld self assessment 1 and 2

Preparation
----------------
My preparation went smoothly by studying Kaplan lecture notes books and vedios , uworld , qbook and and Pre-Test -- Clinical Vignettes For The USMLE Step 1 , I thought they were enough to ace the exam so I scheduled my exam on August after taking uworld assessment and scoring 233 .At that time I did not do any of nbme forms , nor First aid or Kaplan q bank , or khan medical ethics. I was confident then came the shock when I took nbme 7 online and I scored 198 , I was very disappointed because of such a miserable score and my confidence was destroyed totally and I didn’t know what to do , I had only one month for the exam and I wrote in this forum asking for advice regarding the possibility of improving scores in one month and I was told to consider postpone and I took the decision and postpone it and I extended my eligibility period.
so I sat with myself thinking what was wrong in my preparation , what are my weak areas and I read many experiences that emphasize the importance of F.A which I didn’t like and found it boring t that time.
so I started doing First aid and NBME forms ( the old ones ) offline , and after one and a half month I reassessed myself by taking NBME16 in which I scored 217 , I was happy that my nbme score raised by almost 20 in such a short period but at the same time I was not satisfied because my aim score was 240.
So I did first aid another time and did 33% of Kaplan qbanks questions and Khans Medical Ethics 101
and I took nbme 15 online and scored 227 I was happy that my score was improving and I kept up the hard work so in the last two weeks I started to do first aid for the third time and for some chapters for the fourth time and I did uworld notes and pathoma vedios and 4 days before exam I tried to simulate the real exam so I took two nbmes together form 12 and 13
and I scored 249 , 247 respectively. So this score provided me with confidence to go to prometric with comfort which is really an important issue

So as a summary my nbmes scores where
NBME 7 ------- 198 four months before exam
NBME 16 ----- 217 two months before exam
NBME 15 three weeks before exam --- 227
NBME 13 ----- 4 days before exam ---- 247

The real deal 241 .
It is not the best score in the world but I am so proud that I didn’t give up and improving my score from 198 in NBME 7 to get 241 in the real deal

So my main message here , don’t get disappointed by nbmes score and deal with it as an assessment tool to help you identify where u stand in ur preparations and what are ur weak areas so u can work on them and improving them

so never give up and belive in ur self and keep the hard work up and remember

Correct Answer NBME

by all NBMEs you mean all 1,2,3,4,5,7,11,12,13,15,16?...if so then in which order did you do them all? and how to get benefit from the old ones?

yea I did all of them , from each nbme I did I learned new concepts and get benfit from pictures and slides,I think they are more close to real exam questions than uworld I highly recommend doing them but if u don't have time do (form 7-16 only ).The problem is it is time consuming cause u dont know the correct answer and u must search the web

You used them as a learning tool. Will take that into account.

Yes a really nice score. Alsó would like to know that, if test is that hard like they all comment these days. Did you do Uworld 2x? Is it helpful?

hhhh I am not a man lol
Thank u very much for ur words and I wish u a great score
And I wrote about my exam experience , I am the same one who said the exam questions were lengthy that I barely had 2 minutes at the end of exam to review my marked questions and I wrote that it is like doing NBMEs and Uworld they are testing the same concepts with some WTF questions .
I found those questions of general health the most confusing ones.

The test is not easy for sure , but most of the questions are testing the same concepts of Uworld and nbmes and I had few repetitive questions of these .
I did uworld twice for some subject not all such as ( Anatomy , musculoskeletal andtomy ) because they are forgettable subjects , i did pathophysiology questions twice as well , for the rest I reviewed just the notes and marked questions.
And for sure it was of great help , if u have time do it twice but try to focus on ur weak areas to avoid wasting time
