GIT Risk factor for SCC of the Esophagus!

What are the most significant risk factors in the United States for the development of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma?

A) Chewing of betel nuts & consumption of foods containing N-nitroso compounds.
B) Consumption of exceedingly hot food & beverages.
C) A Diet lacking in fruit and vegetables.
D) Smoking tobacco and drinking alcohol.
E) Heartburn and reflux esophagitis.
F) Achalasia.

i think Option E would be for adenocarcinoma of lower esophagus, so D.

  • highest risk for middle aged older individuals
  • African or Asian heritage
  • (choice D) Cigarette smoking & alcohol intake - In United States
  • (choice A) Chewing of betel nuts & consumption of foods containing N-nitroso compounds - In Asian countires

B) Consumption of exceedingly hot food & beverages = SCC in endemic areas such as Iran & Russia.
C) A Diet lacking in fruit and vegetables. = SCC but not a predominant cause.
E) Heartburn and reflux esophagitis. = Barrett's Metaplasia & Esophageal Adenocarcinoma
F) Achalasia. = Squamous Cell Variants.
