USMLE Scores TerenceJ 244/99 My Step1 experience

User Name Terence Jackson IMG
Status Res aspirant
Exam on 09/22/2009 Result on 10/14/2009
Result Pass Attempt No 1
2 Digit Score 99 3 Digit Score 244
USMLE WORLD Score 81% UW Percentage Completed 100%
NBME 1 score --- NBME 2 score ---
USMLE CD score --- Kaplan Q bank ---
Kaplan Q book --- Kaplan Simulated score ---
Duration of preparation More than 1 year

Experience
:

STUDY MATERIAL:

PREPARATION:
Started very slow, around the middle of second year MBBS. Initially reading Goljan only along with Robbins. I feel it is very important to study Robbins, it will give you a better understanding of the subject and an edge over the others. Took me around 5 months to study Goljan, although it can be completed much earlier. Then I started with the Kaplan books. They don't need a lot of time. The material is concise and vivid enough to understand and study everything at a fair pace. I completed my syllabus only by march this year, when I started revising. Revised Goljan the most. All the while solving the pirated version of UW that I had. Did it nearly three times. Also did Kaplan QBook. By the end of August, I had completed 2 revisions of all the subjects and done a good deal of questions. Then I subscribed for the legitimate edition of UW. Had a lot of repeat questions; no wonder I scored 81. Last Two Weeks - Completed one more revision of all subjects, revised the UW notes, did some NBME forms (they were a little easy), then stuck to FIRST AID for the last few days. Finished it fairly quickly, had time to revise it too.

LAST DAY PREPARATION: Slept most of the time. Saw some Manchester United videos. Read some First Aid. Prayed and Slept (with a lot of difficulty).

EXAM DAY
: Woke up at 6 AM. Bathed and freshened up peacefully. Prepared some sandwiches, had some for breakfast and packed some for lunch. My friend dropped me at the center at around 8 AM. At the Center I was the only USMLE examinee, everybody else was there for GRE. The Center was comfortable, the staff was very professional and guiding me at every step.

EXAM STARTED:
Did three blocks in a row. Took a 9 minute break, had a sandwich and a red bull (it really works). Two more blocks. Then an 8 minute block, another red bull. Then the last two blocks. The questions I guess were similar to UW and the computer screen was identical to UW. I was in too much of a daze to note what subject the questions were from, I just know that there were many pictures and graphs, and three audio questions.

EXAM OVER: Came out tired and depressed. Didn't feel too good about the test. Felt the same for the next three weeks, until the results came.

COMMENTS
: I Suggest starting early and preparing slowly. No need for coaching and stuff. All things are available on the net. Do as many revisions as possible, as many questions as possible. Never wrong to repeat the same set of questions over and over again. Have Faith in God, He will never let go. Believe in yourself. Best of Luck!!

i did 5 nbme forms that my friends had downloaded from the net. they were easy, and i was scoring between 42 to 46 correct answers every block. of course i couldn't calculate the score because it wasn't a legitimate subscription. once you do the usmle world qbank, nbme is kinda easy.

well...most of the q's were the same. but i'd say there was a significant number of new questions too. some questions had updated explanations. u see even after doing the pirated version three times i was only able to score around 81 percent in the legitimate one. that should tell you that it was a good buy..

Thanks a lot for sharing man!

You worked hard, were so well prepared, and it all paid off. I can't imagine a more gratifying experience, and many reading dream to do as well as you, including myself.

Just one Q: did you find the Guyton review book useful even though you had the Kaplan's book?

Good luck to ya.

thank you so much...
honestly...the guyton review book wasn't so useful, at least not as significant as the other books mentioned. it's pattern of questions is a lot different from the usmle, but it helped me get started with physio at a time when i was wondering what i had to do next. the q's were simple and some were too challenging.
one doesn't need to do it, i did it because i had a lot of time on my hands. if you do too, then it wouldn't be a bad thing to try it. it doesn't take too much time to finish once you get into a rhythm.

Help step 1 help

hello,

congrats on your success.

if u don't mind, may i ask u a question.

how many hours did u actually read everyday for step1 preparation?

did u do any other work or hospital duty during the preparation or just simply reading for 9-10 months?

it would be of great help if u could answer my questions.

have a nice day

Thanks a lot of sharing you exam experience.
Congrats on your score.
Goodluck with your other steps.

I wanted to ask few questions...
Where there many non clinical questions?
Did u feel that they concentrated on some topics more?(i mean just in ur test..not general)
How long did it take to finish each block?

Hi

thanks for sharing your experience. I have a question, though it may sound weird, but please bear with me. You mentioned in your post that the questions were like UW. Did you mean that they were actually repeats?
O and how many hours did you study each day for this uber score?

Thanks
