Default Australian medical student sitting USMLE step 1

Hi,

I am a medical student from Australia and have recently decided I would like to do residency in America. I just completed my 3rd year of medical school of a 5 year program (first 3 years are pre clinical years) and will be starting my 4th year rotations in Jan.

From the little research I have done, I know I must sit all USMLE and do extremely well in USMLE step 1 (250+). But apart from that, I do not know what else to do.

I would like to sit step 1 sometime in 2015, and finish both step 2 parts in 2016 before I graduate.

I am very motivated and although I have a 4 week vacation atm, I plan on studying everyday (goodbye partying and new years plans !!! ).

From what I said can you please let me know if this is feasible as well as any tips or recommendations. What resources should I use? etc

P.S. I want to do surgery!

EDIT: I have a copy of FA 2014. Will that be fine, or should I use 2015

Hello ,
6 months ago I was in the same situation , I m a student too ,I'll give my exam in march
My suggestion to you is to read many experiences then build up your own plan
It's not easy to study when having the school exams , requirements ..etc
But you can do it, try to start right now and keep reading recent exam takers' experiences
If there was a set of books to suggest absolutely it'd Kaplan lecture notes along with videos its great and saves time but I don't know if u can get them in Australia but there are other sets

so i have decided to do kaplans books first, followed by FA, while doing some UW questions as i go (i found them all on torrents). I will spend the next few months doing this and then do a practice nbme exam to see that this works.

what are the kaplan videos that people recommend? is the content different to the books?

is what i have a good basis to get a 250+? i plan on signing up to online qbanks a few months out from my test date (unconfirmed, possible nov-dec 15).

for extra resources that everyone seems to recommend like BRS physio or pathoma etc, should i include them now? or finish what i have above then add them if necessary?

Also will FA and kaplan cover everything in the test? Hypothetically, if we had unlimited time and it was an open book test, would we score 99-100%?

Well , I can't comment on an individual's plan but let me mention what I understood from many takers*
It basically depends on you and how much knowledge you have gained in preclinical years *, b/c I think most IMGs have weak basics compared to (AMGs) and need a quite longer time to cram the materials ..I think Kaplan videos are essential *for Bio, Pharma (ANS , CNS,Cardio , renal ), physio(cardio , renal ,respiratory ) !*, Embryo ,Gross anatomy,,B/c these are not self explanatory to me .. If u have time do the rest!*

With that being said , I think KLN cover most aspects of the exam but if you aren't good at some subjects you might go for other resources
For me *so far , in my 1st go I have watched most of Kaplan videos and read all KLN (except pathology I did Pathoma I really recommend it .. And CMMRS which is as good as KLN * )*
Then in the 2nd I did read most of KLN , most of USMLE-rX *(it's quit good helps you hammer 1st Aid into your brain but I think Kaplan qbank is better I didn't choose it b/c there isnt 3 month subscription!) and 1st aid *
I'll finish the 2nd before the end of this year then last 3 months then I ll be doing 1st Aid (3-4 times ) and UWorld **

I did other resources qiuckly like High-yield Neuroanatomy , Linda physio but did take long time I can't cover everything these days as cardiologists say time is muscle :/ *

Best wishes
