Thumbs Up my experience of getting 250 in step 1

Hi everyone,
mine is a long journey..hav been preparing on and off for almost 2-3 yrs...but actual dedicated study is somewhere in between 1-1.5 yrs...Im an IMG.. i started off with Kaplan lecture notes+videos except for pathology for which i studied Goljan. It took a lot of time for me to finish those..maybe i didnt know much abt usmle at that time....after that I started UW+FA like everyone...meanwhile i was giving offline nbmes old ones....just to get myself exposed to question style...I did subjectwise in UW...i think it helped me doing subjectwise...i did Physio, biochem, neuroanatomy and pharmac from Kaplan 2nd time...after doing some 300Qs in UW i gav nbme7 to estimate where i stand and i got 205....from there my nbme scores improved gradually as i was doing UW...
NBME 7 - 205
NBME 12-offline-167 correct
NBME 11-237
NBME 16-247
NBME 13-258
NBME 15-241-this was 4 days before my exam and i got the least below borderline in immunology so i went back to Kaplan and did immuno quickly..and it really helped coz i got a star in immuno in my real exam
UWSA1 & 2-263 and 264

REAL EXAM-250

its has been a hard journey but im happy that all the hardwork paid off....
i had to make lot of sacrifices...family pressures....many personal issues that led me to take so many breaks....manytimes i felt i would never finish this step, many frustrations and anxieties...if i can do it anybody can do it....so im posting this to inspire other ppl in same situation as me...dont lose hope...hav consistency in ur prep..know all the concepts...everything is in FA and FA+UW will cover most of exam..but u need the background understanding fr kaplan to really get those concepts..there were some qs in my exam which were not in any of the books...they test basic common sense sometimes..most of the times the main clue to the ans was in question stem only...reading the Qs carefully is very important..i made lot of silly mistakes too due to the time pressure and fatigue..i didnt do whole anatomy from Kaplan..i only did histology and embryology long back as 1st reading didnt do gross anat.but i referred to only the limbs .but i got a star in anatomy too..50% of Qs were very easy if u do UW then u can answer them and 30% were analytical need some thinking..and some 10% outside of the books but maybe with broader thinking and commonsense u can answer them and 10% tough ones...THIS IS MY OPINION BASED ON MY EXAM ONLY...i got only 1 Q which i absolutely dont know...so exam is doable not very horrific...if ur not reading q properly or not sure of the concepts ten it will be hard..coz step 1 is all abt concepts...some 25% pure memory recall Qs

i thank my husband who supported me all along...and my study partner and all my friends for motivating me especially this forum...it helped me a lot thru my prep...
sorry for such a long post
im happy to answer any doubts and questions

Default congras on great score

you mentioned doing immune at later stage again from kaplan. in retrospect . is it productive to study from kaplan again once u have started FA and uworld? Also what did you do for behavioral? I hear its quite a killer these days of course after anatomy.

i didnt do DIT, so i hav no idea abt it....it all depends on how u grasp concepts from the resources u use....

i relied on FA + UW for anatomy most part...i referred to kaplan gross anatomy only for upper and lower limbs and any topic which i had doubts on...other than these i didnt do anything else...but i studied anatomy very well in college....but that was very long back in 2005-2006...i searched online for pictures sometimes wiki if im not clear abt any question
as i said earlier i just gave a vague 1st reading of kaplan mostly histo and embryo..some parts of gross anat long back...

but according to me the must do thing from kaplan is NEURO it really helped in exam...in my exam they gave lot of pictures instead of naming the parts they labeled the pictures...in one Q they didnt even say which is Rt or which is Lt..so u hav to know the Anterioposterior orientation of stuctures as well esp for brainstem...

for immuno its really helpful...i got a star in it...u dont hav read line by line and memorise it from kaplan, but u shud hav a big picture of immuno so u can apply those concepts...for me it really helped reading immuno from kaplan 1 day before my exam....i got a graph right from kaplan immuno in my real exam...

i didnt hav much time for my final revision...so i was revising till the last minute...
according to my last nbme..i focussed on all weak areas before exam...
i did immuno, micro, biostats and some gen pharm and gen patho---all the 1st parts of FA 1 day before exam

for behavioral...i did 1st read from kaplan and after dat i relied on FA+UW...my score jumped from 228(offline nbme 12) to 237 online nbme 11 after i did biostats and beh sc from UW....

ofcourse there r some Qs which u hav no idea...u hav to just apply commonsense

im not working....it took me more than 6 months to finish UW...as i had so many breaks in between i donno how much time it exactly took...but i didnt hav time to do UW for 2nd time so i decided to do it perfectly for the 1st time itself....
initially i used to do only 20q/day but slowly i managed to do 1block/day towards the end of my prep....i couldn't do it any faster..im a slow reader
also i was doing my 2nd revision of kaplan...studying FA with my sp meanwhile

Congrats Anu. 250 is an excellent score and I am sure you have made yourself and everyone around proud. I just wanted to know about Goljan RR you used for path. Did you use it along with the audios or just the text itself. How were you able to retain since each chapter is really long? Thanks!

i listened to few audios..esp for the 1st few chapters i did along with audio...but i couldnt conti the same for the rest as it was taking a long time. i tried to understand the notes rather than memorising it...theres no way u can rem entire goljan...actually by the time i gav my exam i forgot evrything in goljan.and i couldnt revise it even..i just focussed on FA..and i think dats enough once u hav background knowledge..
