Smile The struggle to pass AND I am happy

Ok so this is my first ever post on this or any other USMLE forum and it is for especially for those who know they will NEVER get a 99.

I took Step 1 the first time in December 17 2010 and FAILED 187, You can imagine how devastated I was failing by one point . My first preparation was long. I took almost a year to read First aid twice, and do Kaplan Qbank with the online lectures. I think this was a big mistake to take so long. Anyway, I decided after lots of encouragement to do step 2 CK (which I had already registered for). I took Step 2 and got 213 and that gave me the motivation to register and redo step 1.

Since this is about step 1 I will go into my second round of preparation. So I decided to take 3 months and review and prepare for this intensly. Being a mother of two young ones both under 3 at the time This allowed for only about 6 hours of study per day. Between trying to read First Aid, Going through the Kaplan notes on my weak areas, With a family wedding in June here is what my scores looked like throughout my preparation.
As I said I am delighted to have passed Step 1 on my second attempt.

NBME Form 6 Score 7 April 260 = 165
NBME Form 5 April 19 280 = 170
NBME Form 11 July 06 420 = 203
UWOrld Overall 48% first time
UWorld Sim 2 July 13 480= 214
NBME Form 7 july 27 380 = 193
NBME Form 12 july 27 380 = 193

The last two I did to simulate the actual 8 hour exam.

Test date: August 2, 2011
Score 192 / 77

I passed and am really glad it is behind me . It is not a 99 not even an 80 but I hope with my Ck results and hopefully a pass on CS first attempt I hope to get into a decent Family Medicine Rotation (which has been my desire since entering medical school).

I hope my scores can motivate someone who is doing NBME and getting really low scores initially. Study hard. Don't cheat yourself on Uworld do random timed unseen. If you get low scores learn from them. I was getting 60's in the end as I was learning more and more. Don't worry about saying you are getting below 50 in you assessments. They are a learning tool. Use them as such.

Anyway. That is it for me . I am very happy with my scores. Thanks for reading.

Congratulations!

The "99" is way over hyped! Your scores are good enough for Family Medicine!

All the best!
