Star How To Score 99 For IMGs !!

Hi Guys,

I have been a silent reader of these forums for quite a while so i realized i would put up my way to getting a 99 ! I will keep it brief and crisp I am a 2010 graduate from Pakistan.

My Exam:

- Step 1 Score: 99 / 249
- Duration of preparation: 4.5 Months
- Average Daily Time: 4-5 Hours

Study Plan:

My step wise study plan was:

1) First read of Kaplan Step 1 Lecture Notes ( Subject-wise )
......followed by......
2) First read Kaplan Qbank ( Subject-wise )

**** Repeat above 2 steps for ALL subject*****

**** Use Goljan Pathology Book instead of Kaplan Lecture Notes******

3) Complete read of First Aid (1st)

4) 2nd read of Kaplan Lecture notes
5) First read of Uworld Qbank
6) 2nd read Kaplan Qbank

**** Repeat above 3 steps for ALL subject*****

7) Complete read of First Aid (2nd)

***** Take an NBME Self Assessment Exam at this point*****

8) 2nd Read Uworld Qbank
9)Complete read of First Aid (3rd) ( MOST IMPORTANT )

***** Take another NBME here if you feel like********

10) Take the Freaking EXAM Nao !!! :P

Prep Time to complete the above steps may vary for each individual so don't focus on that rather focus on the Prep Material and Sequence.

Just to clarify. NO, I did not do any Videos except the Epidemiology/Biostatistics Chapters of Behavorial Science which is very useful.

And YES, I stuck to Kaplan + Goljan + Uworld + FA. Thats it. I don't see the need of any other book than these. They cover much more than is required.

In the End -- Waiting for the END ---- Linkin Park ftw !! :P

Good Luck guys

And Don't forget to say THANKS, If i helped

Yes, it is very much possible IF you practice Uworld Qbank along with these, you can certainly and easily score above 95 +

Studying First Aid is of utmost importance, with my experience First Aid alone along with well practiced Uworld Qbank can get you 95+, but its better to be on the safe side

Thanks buddy.
I did both Uworld and Kaplan Qbank Offline which i believe are good enough.

I did each Qbank after going through the relative Subject Lecture Notes not randomly.

Default WOW!

Thank you so much, Hammad! That really was inspiring... I mean, 4.5 months? I'd love to be able to do it in that much time but I'm unsure. I've allotted myself 10 months roughly but if you say you did it in 4.5 months, it *must* be doable, well, roughly about that much time.

How many reads of Kaplan did you need? I'm doing Biochem right now and it's slowing me down because I feel I won't remember much of what I'm reading... isn't it a lot to cover in 4.5 months, overall?

I'm from Dow by the way and I graduated this year.

Glad my post helped. Well it is certainly do-able in 4.5 Months but IF you have time then relax and do it in 9-10 months although i believe the ideal time should be 6-8 Months maximum and not over that as the more time you allot yourselft, the lazier you get :P I had to do it because i had to apply for this year match so i did things in a hurry also CK in 2 months

2 Read of Everything with 3-4 Reads of First Aid.

Don't remembering much after first read? You WON'T ! No-one does As a matter of fact you still feel similar after 2nd read but Trust me it does get stored to some remote corner of your mind and when the time comes up... you will know it

And during your 2nd read try to do First Aid along with each subject as for me Its the MOST IMPORTANT thing in the preparation. As a matter of fact, On the Exam day, most of the things you remember are from First Aid, rest is just there in some remote corner of your mind

Frankly speaking 4-5 hrs is the time of only the last 2 months. First 2 months were more like around 3 hrs but mentioning that may appear as if i am lying so i just didn't mention. I don't have a lot of stamina for long studies. I would normally study for like 30 mins get off... watch a tv serial..play a game.. study again... go out.. study again etc

Estimate time for First Aid: I don't remember the exact days but i did..
80 Pages / day in 1st read, 100+ in 2nd and 120+ / day in 3rd read. Overall 2nd and 3rd read each was around 5 days or less.

Uworld 1st Read 200-250 MCQs / Day
Uword 2nd Read 400 MCQs / Day

Seriously guys, Please DON'T go for the duration. Do it according to your own schedules.

Ofcourse this much speed needs a compromise at places. Sometimes I would skip the explanations of MCQs even during first read esp which felt simple to me...

Repeatedly I would say, The purpose of mentioning my time is to Motivate people that this is very much possible BUT Don't follow it unless you are really short of time.

Lol. Not necessarily. I was Good is medical school, maybe slightly better than good ranking somewhere around 15/150. My basic sciences were above average i believe, not as good as my clinical stuff. No mle prep in college.

Default Thanks a lot hammad, dear bro. !

Dear Bro, Hammad,

Thanks a lot for you precious and priceless advices to other people, since I am an IMG too, I really appreciate it if you could help me to remove some dilemmas I've been facing with them in the way of preparation for Step 1,

I was looking this web site's posts for a while too, and as I understood FA is the most important book that all of us should be completely dominant on its subjects for exam

I have a question, if we start to read FA and start to reading more for subjects that we feel we are weak in FA, is FA enough for exam?

I mean instead of reading kaplan, if we choose selective studying and maneuver on FA subjects to fully understand its concepts, would it be enough for 99 score? or we still require those data s you mentioned in our corner of mind?

NO ! First Aid is not enough on itself. You really do need the background knowledge of KLN to get to 99. FA increases the output of knowledge you have acquired by KLN. FA can get you alone to 90s but not 99s.

Well Offline QBank Books are available in certain countries. For Step 1, UWorld is certainly the most preffered Qbank to go with. Kaplan Qbank is not compulsory but it can be helpful. If you are doing GooD % in Uworld Qbank just SKIP the kaplan.

Hi hammad

Thanks again for your help

I have a question,
As you know, there has been a change to exam style in questions, from old style and basic science based, to new style which is clinical and more similar to what we may encounter in wards !

when did you sit step 1 ? and which one is more similar to nowadays exam? "Kaplan Q banks questions" or "Fa Q banks questions like: Q&A "

I took my Step 1 in May,2011. As per my experience Uworld Qbank is most similar to the real exam and is the preferred Qbank.

As for Anatomy, I did Kaplan LN and found them fine however some of my friends suggest High Yield Series esp for Neuroanatomy.

As for Images i Did only the ones in Goljan while left the CT Scans to be interpreted via my background knowlede. However, Kaplan does have CT Scans also which can be beneficial

Hey bro! Many congrats for such a great score.
I am also form Pak. I did my step2ck first and AH got a 99/230 in it.
Now I am on to step1. Did physio from BRS and then did its UW questions. Now doing biochem from KLN with videos (coz I am weak in this subject). I will start biochem UW after I am done with it.
1. So do you think doing step2 before step1 will help me in any way.
2. Is there any subject where I should spend less amount of time.
3. I have started UW already, so I will finish it first IA, and then do kaplan qbank with First Aid. Then I will do UW again and FA with it.

I need to get it done within 4-5 months. What do you think?

Best of luck with the IVs and the match

Hey. Thanks for your well wishes.

1) I believe CK will help you because around 30% of the things you have done in CK are basically from Step 1. Plus knowing the clinical aspect MAKES A HUGE BENEFIT in making the diagnosis in step 1 even if you are unaware of the pathological basis.

2)No all subjects require decent amount of time. Do not compromise anything unless you are short of time. Be generous with Goljan Pathology as it will help cover and revise all other subjects also.

3) Your plan sounds pretty solid to me. Just remember to take NBME 1 month prior to exam after your 2nd reads and another 1-2 weeks before exam to know where you stand.

Cheers & Good Luck

2 weeks? I believe the only thing that can really help you now is First Aid. CRAM IT. Seriously memorize everything in it. Give it atleast 4 reads or more if possible.

After your 2nd read of FA, do the marked/wrong UW Qs within 3 days or so. Then give 3rd read of FA. Take NBME here again. Give ur 4th read of FA.

Go hard on FA. With each successive read you will be able to do it in less time.

Hope it helps.

Cheers and Good Luck Buddy !

I have left goljan for the end, when I am done with all the other subjects cos I have heard that he integrates stuff really well. Do you think I should use his audio lectures with it?
When I am done with goljan IA, then do I need to do it again in the second read or I just have to concentrate on FA from there onwards?

Good luck with your IVs. Insha Allah you will get into a nice place.

Yes i would suggest give Goljan 2 reads. It helps. I didn't use audio notes and i believe if u go through the whole book u dont need them as audio notes are more so for those who skip the whole book and go for goljan slides only.
