Unhappy Got an insanely hard test and failed. Should I give up?

I took my test in July. I'm from the Caribbean so I was really counting on doing good on this. I studied a LOT. Did Kaplan, Goljan, FA, Uworld. All the practice tests I was taking was indicating in the mid 90s on the step. To take so many numerous practice tests, score so high, and still fail is devastating. My test was very very hard. The questions were like nothing I had ever seen. I had about 20% of Qs from FA only. Uworld didn't help at all for the actual exam. Most of the qs I had had biochem integrated into them heavily. In total I had only around 20 pharm Qs (my best subj). I had zero straight forward questions. Everything was very lengthy vignettes that took long to read. I was fully prepared, knew a great abundance of info, was scoring great yet still failed.
There's nothing I could do different. Should I just give up and move on with my undergrad degree? I have no idea what I could do differently since I knew so much to begin with. This is just absolutely devastating to me since I was scoring so high and got a really unfair test.

So sorry to hear about this. I didn't even think something like this can happen.

I would be devastated also, and really really angry at my luck of getting a more difficult exam than many others.

Hang in there, think positive. Better days will come.

Really sorry to hear about this.

Hey, sorry to hear that to. But I also would like to know what your NBME scores were and if you took it online or offline and how you actually calculated that you were scoring in mids90s? what would your predicted 3-digit score be according to self-assessments? How did you do on qbank and uw?

ur nmbe will be good predictor of ur final score.so either u have not take one or u r just justifying ur self. try to find what was wrong so u can solve it.
.anyway giving up is bad idea, u can try this time with nmbe correlation.

i ran out of time in the end so could only do 1 nbme offline. got in the low 500s on it. uworld i did roughly 1700 qs online and cumulative was 63% but towards the end i was scoring in 70s. either way I have no idea what i could do differently this time.

take the test again very quickly (within a month) score high... follow up with the entire CK CS process, then approach programs directly.. showing them that the first one was a fluke. It might be worth it.

hey my friend be strong !!! never give up or give in !!
here's my advice .. you can reschedule your exam a month and half from now, as you still have everything in ur head, suppress any thoughts about your failure ..don''t surrender to that thoughts because what happened has happened and you can't change past , but certainly you can change the future .... do FA again .. memorize it by heart .. don't miss a single word or diagram and then do UW during that month every day 2 blocks .. then take all the NBME .. take all the exams and compare your score

may God be with you

I would recommend to take NBME with feedback to learn the areas where you are weak. Also, use your score report to assess it and start reviewing the areas you were weak on exam. Do Qs every day, even if it means another subscription to UW or Kaplan, re-read FA to the point you know what's on the page when you turn it, as many times as needed. Check your progress with other NBMEs and UWSA, but keep in mind that there is a standard deviation of 100 in NBME (I don't which sd UWSA has) and take that into account as well. Certainly, don't give up, but rather use that experience to build a stronger knowledge. Maybe start thinking how you are going to explain it to program directors.

I would strongly discourage you to retake your exam within a month or so. Instead, despite depressing mood, start reviewing everything again within a month or so. Take the exam only when you are OK with your knowledge and NBME score(not mid90s, but a 3-digit, that doesn't scares you and REPEATS itself on the next form). NEVER do it offline!

Best of luck to you and thank you for sharing your experience, I believe that we all benefited from that!

hey,
i am really sorry for what happened.
one of my friend took test and she scored 99 in each nbme exam before step 1 .she studied for full 1 year with no job and any other activities ,say 10-12 hrs /day .she used to guide evry1 who was going to take step 1..she forced me to study so hard that i got 99 in step 1. however, she failed her exam. she went for rechecking and failed that time too.

The reason to tell you is that u are not the only one to face a thing like this...this happens to a lot of people and it is usually considered better to fail than to pass in low score( in general) so plz dont give up.

i ll advice you that next tym when u read questions, dont try to read everything instead search for BUZZ words...believe me i passed by this method and i am sure any1 can do it..just take ur tym.
another thing, plz dont bother about how are u going to explain it to PD's. Concentrate on ur studies only.

I think your problem here is also the fact the you did not really test yourself . NBME offline is not predictive at all, I have no idea even how you've estimated that low 500s doing that offline. And gosh, I just hope that you meant that you've only had time to test yourself once and not that I've decided to test yourself on NBME form#1 offline, because #1 is no longer even valid!

well my main concern is if I'll even get a residency even if I get mid 90s the 2nd time. That alone is making me want to give up. I dont know if all this hard work will even be worth it in the end. I wanted to do cardio but with a fail the 1st time I dont even know if its possible at all anymore.

As I hear now Step I is not as important for the Match since SOAP this year STEP 2 will be forced on AMG to take on end of 3rd year.

STEP 2 is going to be the important step now

I think you might be misinformed, Step 2 CK / CS can only be done by completing Core Rotations by AMGs (IM/Surgery/FM/Psyc etc.), some students opt to do research years / extended time inbetween rotations, so it can't necessarily be ''forced'' upon them.

As with many specialties, Step 2 Score is important, but Step 1 plays a ''filtering'' role in this selection process.

Better to be well informed than play on the likes of rumors!
