Smile The USMLE Step 1 & me...I'm done!!!

First of all...I´m an OLD IMG (I finished med school > 10 year ago)…

I started studying last week of March 2011 (I took May off….bad idea…) and I took the exam today …

Materials:
- Kaplan videos (all except for pathology and cardiovascular / respiratory physiology) = I watched them twice
- Microbiology = I read CMMRS once
- Pathology = Goljan audio x 1 time + first 12 chapters of RR Pathology
- Physiology = Costanzo (loved it!)
- Pharmacology = couple of chapter from Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews

DIT: only the first & second day videos...that guy is so boring!
FA 2011…just read Embryology, Neurology and Psychiatry twice

I finished UW (timed unused random) with 70%
Kaplan Step 1 Qbank (completed less than 40%) 76%

USWA 1 = 680/252
USWA 2 = 800/265
NBME 12 = 600/245
NBME 7 = 580/240
Kaplan Diagnostic Test = 84%
150 free questions = 94%

Test: the question stems were pretty long!…more like kaplan Qbank.

Anatomy I had like 10 questions...KAPLAN videos is not enough!
Embryology FA is enough.
Neuroanatomy FA is enough.
Behavioral Science was so weird! I had like 7 questions…I think kaplan is really good but not enough
Biostatistics I had like 15 question…I didn't use kaplan/FA for this, so I cant help here…a little bit of everything I guess
Immunology like 12 questions…Kaplan OK
Biochemistry Kaplan and UW more than enough
Pathology ...don't read RRPathology!…goljan audio + UW are enough.
Physiology a lot of up/down questions…check kaplan Qbank!!!
Pharmacology…you must listen to Lionel Raymond (kaplan videos)

A lot of CT-MRI, plus microbiology/hematology pictures…(I used google images)

the bottom line is…the test is really doable…don't be afraid and good luck to all!….

@heman466s

cud u plz share with us what things u should have done that u didnt do!!!??...well, I didnt read FA...I really dont have a final answer right now ...I would say:
- dont read RRPathology...with the audios and UW are more than enough
- for microbiology...CMMRS was way too much!!!...kaplan + UW is enough

and is kaplan q bank very important?!!...I think is a really nice resource, specially for Physiology (up/down questions) and Behavioral...if you have the time and money, do it!

@yasirsattar75

Kaplan Qbank = Try to finish physiology and B.Sc. questions!!!

More like NBME 12...with a lot of weird B.Sc questions!

I had 3 murmurs, 1 EKG, a lot of CT scan, 2 really straight forward physiology graph and a LOT of up/down arrow questions!!!!!!!!

Almost forgot!...biostat...simple stuff...PPV, bias, type of study...pretty much like NBME!

Default Congo!!!!

Congratulations buddy , I know you have overcome the beast easily and will be the king of Step1.
You were one of our best buddy and We all miss you on this step 1 forum.
You will be a great asset to people in Step 2 forum.

Few questions

You told there were several CT/MRI questions were the answer to those questions hidden in the stem of the question or we had to recognise the CT/MRI's

Can you please suggest some websites for these sort of questions?

How was Histology tested in your exam, were there lots of histo slides too.

With respect to concept tested in the exam was it more in resemblance with Kaplan or UW Qbank.

For ECG is illustrations given in FA sufficient

Were there 7 behavioral science questions in each block or just 7 in whole of the exam.

What would you recommend for the Behavioral science section of the exam.

Will look up to you in any stage of my preparation

Best wishes for a stellar score

Good luck for your future endeavors.

@usmle2011

You told there were several CT/MRI questions were the answer to those questions hidden in the stem of the question or we had to recognize the CT/MRI's....most of the time the answer was hidden in the stem of the question...dont worry for that!

Can you please suggest some websites for these sort of questions?...I used google "images"...an amazing resource!

How was Histology tested in your exam, were there lots of histo slides too...I didn´t have any histo slide...Kaplan is more than enough

With respect to concept tested in the exam was it more in resemblance with Kaplan or UW Qbank...I think both Qbank are great...but the questions were more like Kaplan.

For ECG is illustrations given in FA sufficient....I don´t know...I didnt use FA for that...I only had 1 pretty easy ECG question...

Were there 7 behavioral science questions in each block or just 7 in whole of the exam.......nop, 7 in total!

What would you recommend for the Behavioral science section of the exam...I would say: kaplan videos + Kaplan Qbank + NBME!!!

Good luck!

Well, I think is better (at least in B. Sc and physiology).
My exam was more like Kaplan/NBME than UW....
I think UW is good for Biochem and gentics....

GOOD LUCK!

Congratulations, bebix! I'm sure you did great!

I have a few questions:
Did you use the Kaplan LN at all, or did you only watch the videos?
Regarding Physio: you said you used Constanzo - do you mean BRS Physiology or the bigger book (textbook)?
Regarding Microbiology: I plan on only using CMMRS and you said it is too much - will it be ok if I use CMMRS without any videos or anything from Kaplan? or would you still say Kaplan LN is better? or only Kaplan Micro videos?

Thank you!

@val7
Did you use the Kaplan LN at all, or did you only watch the videos?
- I didnt read the Kaplan LN...except for Molecular Biology!

Regarding Physio: you said you used Constanzo - do you mean BRS Physiology or the bigger book (textbook)?
- I meant BRS Physiology

Regarding Microbiology: I plan on only using CMMRS and you said it is too much - will it be ok if I use CMMRS without any videos or anything from Kaplan? or would you still say Kaplan LN is better? or only Kaplan Micro videos?
I would say one or the other...but KAPLAN + CMMRS is way too much!

------------

@jaimin
I have done uworld only..dont know about kaplan ques.
kaplan ques are more tricky and harder than uworld?
- They are different...but both are great Qbank. I think Kaplan is harder though.

------------

@qurat21
Congratulations!
"n ur biostat was too good how did u master this subject?"...hahaha, I'm a biostatistician

Congratulations, Bebix! We all are waiting for your great result! Good luck and keep posting!
This thread is getting so long, I guess it says how popular you are

A question: I've noticed you did not use KLN or FA for biostatistics. So, did you just use qBanks for that or a separate book? (was it a joke that you are biostatician?)

You mentioned that you looked at google images for different pictures. Do you have any list of pictures that you looked for or any images that are high yield apart from the ones covered in Qbanks?

Embarrassed Study Materiales Question!?

First of all congrats!! its goo to read something positive in theses forums!
im a IMG from argentina and i plan on taking my Step1 in april , i have time but i want to be sure to have the right books given that all my school stuff is in spanish i would rather reread old subjects in english! (im in 6th year medschool doing my internship)

this is what i plan on using...
1. First Aid 2011 for sure, already started reading it.
2. Kaplan Notes 2011 (theres like 8 books).. im considering if i should buy them or not!?
3. Kaplan step 1 qbook (its published in 2004!! maybe its too old??but i have it!)

* DIT (did you do this entire paid course?)
** i want to use goljan audios/videos but i dont know where to get them?

anything else you recommend??????? im afraid that it wont be the material that is required for the exam, and first aid has a thousand books to choose from! and i dont plan on spending all the money ! i already have to pay for the exams!!

THANK YOUUUUUUUU!!!!

CONGRATS!!!

And thanks for writing out your thread. Its basically the exact same thing I plan on do. I might however watch the whole DIT depending on time, I watched some of it already and yeah it seems very boring.

i think it was tougher than UWSA...something like a mix between NBME and Kaplan....it wasnt tougher than NBME though...just different (same concept asked in a different way)

Hi. I didnt use Kaplan notes...only kaplan videos for step 1. Guyton? I used it just "for fun", but the book is crazy (huge!). I didnt use high yield books, so I cant give you an answer. Good luck!

Are you serious Bebix, you used Guyton for fun?...lol....

I totally understand....I have a major crush on Guyton...and Robbins! And when I grow up, i'll try to be just like Linda (Costanzo) to see if I can marry one of them... ;-o

Congrats on finishing with step 2 and starting your step 3. My gosh...you're on a role!!

Good luck with all.....

I intend to use only CMMRS and you said it is too much - it is certain that if I did not any video from Kaplan or any use CMMRS? You will say Kaplan LN is better? Or only slightly Kaplan video?

CMMRS is a great book, but in my opinion is a little bit too much. I didnt use Kaplan LN though, only the videos...and if I have to choose, I think with the videos you´ll be just fine!. Good luck.

@Bebix...

I've succumb to the idea of using kaplan videos. IDK why I find it so cumbersome to sit down and focus, I seriously have ants down my pants. I do much better just reading- specially when I have big textbooks.

But anyway, my question- you said that you watched the videos twice, did you watch them back to back (like, the same one back to back)? Did you annotate while watching? If so, where..FA?

BTW ..BUMP!

Hi...on average I watched them twice (randomly) and I didnt take notes (and btw, I only used FA for embriology, some neuro and psych)...i guess the trick is to watch a couple of videos and then watch something on Netflix

Hi Bebix, you are my inspiration. I wish all the best for you. I am an "old" IMG too and planning to start full time studying at end of the March. Could you please tell me how many hours a day did you study?

Congrats! Your post is very informative.
