Romania Romania Medical Student Gearing up for USMLE

Hey,

I am a medical student in the last year of Med School (6th year) here in Romania. I am planning to pursue a residency career in US, and have gather all the necessary materials and the info, and have even started preparing for the steps. The only problem is, I don't know how to schedule the exams properly, so that I'll be in time for the Interviews/Match.

I graduate in June 2012, though I get my degree in September/November. So I can start giving the exams only after that. I plan to spend from 4/5 months on Step 1, and 4/5 months on Step 2. That means, I am willing to spend the entire year of 2013 for these tests. Assuming I score good marks, and pass I wanna apply for the 2014 Match.

The problem is, I don't know when I should start registering for the exams, and when should I take them in 2013, meaning in time with their availability. I don't know when the exams are available, and I heard you should book Step 2CS as early as possible, because its hard to get a place. Also, I would need time to for the interviews.

What I want is help in scheduling the exams properly. Can someone tell me
1. The available months when you can take the steps 1/2/cs?
2. How many months earlier should I apply for each of them so as to be in time for the 2014 match.
3. When is the deadline for the 2014 Match?
4. Also, the CS, I know it can be given before either step 1/ step 2CK, but isnt it better to do it after CK because then u have a better understanding. Or you can perform well in the CS without going through either Step1/Step2CK?

If someone can lay a good plan for this scenario, I'll be very thankful.

Thanks a lot

Step 1 and Step 2 CK Exams are available in all months of the year on most of days of the week except holidays and weekends.
It's conducted at Prometric centers which are available throughout the world.

Step 2 CS exam can only be taken in USA (Chicago, Philadelphia, LA, Atlanta, or Houston). Again conducted on most days of the week.

You should be ready (passed step 1, step 2 CK, step 2 CS) and got ECFMG certificate by September 1st 2013, so that you can apply for March 2014 match.

September 1st, 2013...wow, thats a tight deadline. That means, starting from June2012, I'll have 15months to clear all the steps. Hmmm...Well, its practically 12-13 months since after June, I'll be preparing for the license exam of Romania, conducted in September 2012.

12/13 months, for all the steps. Is that doable? I have been a top good student throughout my medschool, and am very dedicated. But I know my basic sciences are weak, so I will need time. And our clinicals are different from US.

What strategy do you suggest? I ain't asking about the materials/courses/tips or tricks, but just an algorithm. A plan to pursue, like first 6 months till Jan 2013 I should have given Step 1, then till June Step 2 CK, and till July Step 2 CS.

I would highly appreciate any recommendations/advices.

Oh btw, I already have a visa to US (B1/B2) till 2015. So, getting there isn't a problem.

If you have the commitment and will, I believe it's doable in 13 months.
Nevertheless check these:

As for how to plan for your study, check these
There's no magic plan for each one, you have to start your prep and then manage your plan according to your individual circumstances.

Thanks for all the info. You guys are a tremendous help. I am thinking of starting my own blog of the plan that I am going to undertake. Over the last few months, I have researched various plans/options and I'll post once I get myself organized.

For now, I had just one more question. Although I have a B1/B2 visa valid till 2015, when I apply for residencies, the hospitals will consider this and give me preference for a job (since they wont have to sponsor) or I'll have to change my visa in order to start residency and the hospitals will sponsor either H1/B1 visa?

Wishing you all the luck with your upcoming blog.

You have to change to J1 or H1B visa, hospitals can't hire your on B1/B2 visa. But the fact that you have a visit visa ready gives you great flexibility in attending the CS exam, match interviews, observerships, ...etc

Hy. I am also a medical student in Romania in 5 year and plannig to take the step 1 in september this year. Soo because I know how is medicine studing in Romania you should consider to take kaplan notes and video then goljan Path and then first aid and questions bank like uworld. If you want we can discuus about the study plan. I had the same issue felling that I am a very good student in my med school but for step you need to learn in a particular way and you need to integrate lots of thinks. they don't care soo much about the What questions but rather about Why questions.
soo if you want we can talk.

hey!
i have a question! when it is okay to start taking the exams?....as far as i know, you are allowed to take them after you have finished your first 2 years...and yet, i see that you are in the 5th and 6th year...so why did you wait so long? is it better like this? i should mention that i am starting my second year and i am thinking about taking step 1 next summer? do you think it's too early? i looked at some questions and i realise it's a lot, a lot of work, especially for me, but i feel like it would be a good time since i also finish the basics at school....so, what's your advice? do you think i have a good chance to do this now? or should i wait, just like you?
thank you...
