Default Hi

Five days left n u dont want to take nbme if ur basics are strong and confident that u Can cross 99 than tc the exam if not than u have to study more.
Take the nbme n see what you have to do. It's better to test before the real exams at least u know where u stand that's my thinking .

Study FA FA FA n your notes

I dont have experienced yet ...so sorry

Good luck n give your best shot

Default thanx bridget...

thank u , i mean i was jst wonderin if not givin nbme wud in ny way hurt my chances, i mean its far too late now with jst 5 days, some of my seniors suggested i take nbme around 3 weeks before...

ny ideas wat to conc. on, last moment cribbin nd stuff nd i hvent kept a list of forgettables(evrythin looks forgettable to me now )... m slightly confident as i was doin d kaplan qbank and was getting an average in d range of 75 - 80% but i kno its not an xact predictable science as compared to nbme...

nd oooh yeah, ny idea how d qs r in d actual xam as compared to mleworld...

hope you ace d xam, nd i get 230, its all i ask... :sorry:

so....it's upto to you

Ok so your fear is taking the NBME and seeing a score you dont like? Think of the other side, taking the real exam and seeing a score that you dont like!

While doing great on the NBME doesnt always equal doing great on the real exam (even for me scored more than 20pts less ), there is a strong correlation and it will give you the confidence that you need.

Ur UW score is really good.. Just take nbme, it ll predict ur score , but also u ll get to solve many more new questions and i have heard people from this forum itself who got a few nbme ques in the real exam.. Just giving u another reason to take the nbme..!!

Default hey guys...

ya well, i gave my step1 on oct 3... nd frankly, i think i shud hve given nbme... i was so low on my confidence dat i dint want to giv nbme, nd now i m regrettin d fact dat if i had given it, i wud hve known wher i stand, i wud hve been more confident, not on d basis of wher i stand in terms of my knowledge but rather been confident based on doin away wit d uncertainty of my expected performance...

wel, so far so well, its not in my hands now, m jst hopin to get a decent score, which i wil b postin up here...

again, thnks for d help guys...

also, just wondering, what (NEW 2 DIGIT SCORE) did you get with a 260? I know its not important, but I am trying to figure out if its possible to still crack a 90 on this exam

Thumbs Up

Look at that! Such a high score for someone so nervous and freaked out.

Congratulations! You shined. Please do post your prep experience. I'm guessing it must be awesome because you were all low in confidence and popped out with an amazing score.

Congrats again and thanks for letting us know the outcome.

Default Hey guys...

Thanks Tootsie nd mikemike... i guess i was jst freakin out more than necessarily, but i m more than happy now, cudnt hve asked for a better score...

nd m more than ready to help here wit ny advice and tips, but mikemike u actually hve posed an interestin question here, nd m no more an expert on d 2 digit score, rather think myself as a conspiracy theorist( :P wel, theories on wat nd hw d changed new format 2 digit score wil b appearing now on)

so, Q: What's the deal with the new 2 digit score??

A: For a start i compiled a list of scores, as fast as i cud includin mine nd d reported 2 digit score after Oct.1, below r 3 digit scores, followed by their newer 2 digit scores,

264 - 90%

260 (mine) - 89% i got,

253 - 87%

238 - 84%

Now previously any score above 237 would have been a 99 percentile... i think now dey r doing away with the percentile, and rather focusing on the core percentage itself. Its plausible, as, we in step 1 have 336 questions, out of which 10% - 15% of the questions are not counted, (survey kinda questions, which apparently help in setting the future set of papers for students takin their step 1 exams, so dey quote), so now we are left wit app. 286 - 300 questions to answer, and of these the correct answers will be counted.

so mikemike if you want to score a 90% with the new scoring system, u need to answer 263 at least right out of the appr. 286 - 300 questions which you wil probably have of the 336 that are actually counted.

I think, the percentage now does not matter. All schools and universities have their own range and cutoff values, for eg a good internal med residency, they keep their cutoffs between 235 to 250, for your 3 digit score. So aim for a score 230 and above, and you will be fine.

How do i know all dis? I dont.. As an FMG myself, I m just speculating all dis based on experiences and by contactin my senior FMGs in the US... I live 8000 miles away from the US, hell i wud hve been there i wud hve had a much better idea...

Hope people dont yawn and doze off before reading the end of dis post...

hey mikemike nd tootsie,

k, here's hw my prep went...

ok, here's sumthin m not proud of,

i hve NOT given or attempted any of the stuff below,

UWSA 1 or 2, Kaplan Qbanks, NBME ny paper for that matter...

i stil regret y i dint, but its k...

now what i have actually done, prep time - 6months,

2 nd a half months - kaplan vids nd notes..

1 month - golljan path, nd dat only nuthin else, nd trust me, i regret so much now, as to wastin a whole precious month on goljan, coz after dis month, i was gud only in path, while d rest of all subjects i had done earlier, seemed lik a blur... goljan is sumthin to b started way earlier nd done little by little, day after day...

1/2 month - was kinda lik a break, lik religious stuff, cudnt study, 12 hours of hypoglycemia, wit 12 hours of hyperglycemia... but ya, wat m emphasin is, around 2 months before ur xam, give urselves a tiny break... u need to b healthy n relaxed too...

2 months, total nd utter dedication to UWorld... man i love uworld, it mkes u think n think n think.... lik on d openin page dese guys claim, plz dnt use it as a tool to measure scores, but use it as a learnin tool, dey r right... i went thru it 3 times, first time gettin 72%, second time, did only d wrong answers nd marked questions... and both the times, nd an additional 3rd time went thru the explanations... finished goin thru explanations around 5 days before the xam... n den realised, k, i shud hve taken nbme... nbme shud b taken at least a month before...

den, last 20 days, durin those 2 months, did FA alongwith uworld, hardly managed to finish it 5 days before the step 1 xam, nd 5 days for a revision... i wud hve liked another revision, but damn it, d prep never ever seems to b enuf, no matter hw much time u hve... but ya, 1 time thorough, nd at least 2 times peek thru, is advisable...

now durin d penultimate month before ur xam, the practice xams hopefully shud help u determine d key areas of ur weaknesses, conc. on them... nd, evry1 has their fav list of forgettables, keep them close to u, coz last 3 days of d xam, wen u cant study nythin new, u hve to go thru dis... but dats for later...

now as an img dis is hw we go thru usually 6 months of prep... coz i hve heard american local grads do it in jst 6 weeks, nd dats amazin... hopefully dis is of help to evry1... ciao, later...

Thanks a lot simplydumb for your post.

I think all you did (including the fast) served for the right purpose; you did really really good. Congrats.

That said, I don't think I can sit through such a huge test without NBME. But I guess it all worked out, eh?

Best of luck on your future endeavors and continue hanging out around here in the forum.
