Arrow exam prep/experience... 236/99

Have been a silent observer in this forum and it has helped me tremendously, so I thought I would give my two cents.. I am an IMG currently in medical school.

Preparation
I started in early part of 2010 but my studying was a bit irregular. I had some personal issues to work through, but I got really serious towards the latter part of 2010 (my exam was in september of this year)... I did kaplan qbank in 2010 and started UW in early part of 2011

First aid I would have probably gone throught it maybe like 4 times (I studied it randomly)... but went through it properly twice

What I bought:
Kaplan home study program
First aid
First aid Q & A
BRS physiology
BRS behavioral science
PreTest series
UW
Kaplan Qbank
Goljan patholgoy rapid review + audio (audio was useful)

What I wished I had done differently:
I personally thought Kaplan study material was OVERPRICED and I felt I did not gain much out of it. I did use it, but honestly I wish I had bought books for each subject (atleast the subjects I was weak on) rather than something so comprehensive.. I did not use the live lecture series, so I don't know how good that is...

PreTest= DON'T BUY..... not reflective of the exam, and too many mistakes

Q Banks
I thought both kaplan and UW were EXCELLENT. Many people beat up on Kaplan Qbanks saying its too easy or just not worth, but I thought it was highly indicative of the type of questions asked on the exam... I bought the Qbank that has all the qbanks, (physiology, IV clinical vignettes...) and it was really useful to learn.

As for UW, I think it has been said enough that is the qbank you MUST use... If money is the issue, hands down go to UW... The only thing I must say is that I am very good with time so I did mine in TUTOR mode... It was nice b/c I got instantaenous feedback and I didn't have to waste time rereading the questions again for the second time... Def make notes when you go through UW.. Somebody posted their notes on this forum and I used that as my base and added my own notes (they keep updating the qbank)

My scores
I am an average student...
(All online)

These were in 2010 (doing kaplan qbank and studying)=>
Nbme 1 192
2201
3205
UWSA 1 225
UWSA 2 245

These were in 2011 (doing UW and studying)
4200
7205 (three months out)
11214 (two months out)
12 224 (one month out)

Kaplan qbank= 60%
UW first time= 60%
UW second time= 75%
free 150= 87% (2 days before)

As you can see it was a VERY FRUSTRATING prepration b/c my score remained just stuck... I have to thank God that I peaked towards the end of my preparation...I might have UW to thank for that.... The funny thing is UWSA kinda predicted correctly the range of my score even though NBME said otherwise...

NBME curve is tough, I mean you get 75% correct and its just a 205...

The last two months + exam
This I thought was CRUCIAL... I did FA over a span of month... And the last two weeks again I did FA.... This was supplemented by just questions, questions and questions!!!! I think this is what really boosted my score

The exam itself was EASY! Don't remember anything about the questions itself, but all the concepts I had seen have come in some form or another.. Some ppl say you should practice the 8 hrs before you take the exam, but I personally felt that you have enough adrenaline to go throught that test... Bring lots of food and fluids though

Score: 236/99 (Never thought I would get it)

Bottomline
For those ppl that feel stuck like I did, don't lose heart... just keep pushing yourself... That is what I did.
Kaplan homestudy did not benefit me
PreTest is a no no
UW tutor saves time
Do as many NBME as you can (some of those pix come on the exam.. not the exact same questions though) and online of course
QUESTIONS, QUESTIONS , QUESTIONS .. I learned a lot more than studying
FA + UW+ Kaplan Qbank (Everybody has said that, BUT SERIOUSLY FA has it ALL down in one book)
Qbank percentages donít mean anything.. that is for learning.. use NBME and UWSA as learning and predictive tools (some pix from these exams come on the actual exam, but not the same question)

Thank you so much for your post. Its very inspiring!

Congratulations on your great score! That was courageous of you to work harder after learning your previous nbme scores and finished the exam with flying colors!

For the past few weeks, i have heard so many people saying that KAPLAN is more indicative of the exam! I really should stop doubting and just buy it!

I will be seating for the exam on the 3rd week of December and I thought I should buy Kaplan and Uworld now as my Rx subscription is about to expire.

Could you please suggest on what Qbank should I start with? Is it better to Start with Uworld? or vice versa? or it doesn't matter?

Also, is BRS enough for Behavioral Science?

Thank you in advance and again, congratulations!!!!

I think you should take an NBME immediately b/c you need to assess where you are.. NBME's also tell you where your weakness and strengths lie (this may or may not be accurate)... Seeing that you have 2 months left, you can focus on your weaknessess.. I thought BRS behavioral was an excellent choice, but when it comes to ethics questions it is hard to prepare for.... I felt behavioral sciences atleast on my exam were all types of ethics questions... Seeing that you have already done golijan path once don't do it again.. I also did one run through... Go for the kill, and take an nbme

I honestly do not remember what subjects were considered high yield/ useful for kaplan qbank... I did it sometime back... but there is an option in qbank called hi yield where your questions will be HY material and nothing itself...Do this first and then proceed with the other questions... The thing is I was HORRIBLE at physio and pathophysio so I thought Kaplan did well with this... they also have a separate 500 q physio bank... But if your time is short(like few a weeks) I don't think it is a good idea to start another qbank...

Yeah I wrote my prep was kinda of irregular... I am in medical school, so I could not dedicate like the whole day to study.... What I used to do was, wake up like really early and do abt 50 q's before I go to college... When I came back did like an hour of studying.. BUT the last two months, it was like 100 q's a day (50 morning and 50 evening) and 3-4 hours of nonstop studying from FA

I would say try to finish kaplan in about a month's time.. the questions are generally easier and I think you can fly through the explanantions... Then do UW and I would do UW twice... the idea is just to keep doing questions .... Yeah I think BRS is more than enough for Behavioral if you have the time...Actually I feel FA in retrospect is more than enough. Keep in mind though ethics questions comprise a good bit of behavioral and I thought it would be easy, but my exams ethics questions were just plain weired....I think b/w both qbanks it should cover most of the ethics questions

Goodluck on your exam!

I donít think my nbme scores were typed properly (my bad)Ö

Nbme 1 192
Nbme 2 201
Nbme 3 205
Nbme 4 200
Nbme 7 205 (3 mo out)
Nbme 11 214 (2 mo out)
Nbme 12 224 (1 mo out)

The other thing I wanted to say was if you are starting your prep/early on in your prep and when you do FA the first time, PLEASE do not mark or highlight anything.... Because after sometime you revisit first aid for your next run through, you will be pleasantly surprised to know what you higlighted or wrote in, you already know from reading it somewhere or doing questions.... In your second run through maybe start marking/hilighting... Basically the idea of hilighting is that when you do your grand review of FA at the end, you want the higlighted stuff to just stand out that way you can go "oh, I have to know this..." Thats the mistake I made... My whole FA was a fluorescent mess of a book by the end
