Smile Exam is Over..yeah

Finally I am done with the exam
Such a relief..
Impressions about the exam: Was not as difficult as I had expected it to be. It was between NBME and Uworld's level of difficulty.
Breaking it questions wise.
About 40 - 50 % Questions were really straight forward.
About 25 to 30 % were of average difficulty.
I found only 5-10 % of the questions extremely difficult.
For more information about that check this USMLE Step 1 Exam Questions Difficulty Percentages as voted by members

Subject wise
Anatomy; Kaplan and FA are definitely not enough. Some weird questions which I had no clue about.
Biochem: all question were straight forward. FA is enough.
Genetics: Mostly family trees with questions asking to identify the type or disease with similar inheritance.
Physiology: Almost all questions were somewhat related to hormones, their actions and secondary messengers. Kaplan does a good job for physiology.
Pathology: FA is enough. I had read Goljan but I think most of the question which I had on the exams could be answered even if I had skipped Goljan.
Pharmacology: Very easy. Uworld pharmac questions are harder then the real stuff.
Microbiology: Kaplan does a good job. Most questions had a slide or a picture along with it.
Behavioral science and Bio-stats: This was the most difficult part. Best response type questions had options which were very close and difficult to choose from. Kaplan Qbank represented these questions quite well. I had 2 or 3 questions from Biostats which I had no idea about.
Lots of CT scans and Images..All were easy to identify..

In all the exam is easy. Will post my detailed experience after I get my results..

They tested heavily on pelvic and abdominal anatomy. Had one or two questions which required me to know where a particular muscle was and its action.
Upper and lower limb anatomy is very straight forward.
Neuroanatomy was also straight forward with lots of CT scans.
I had very few questions on embryo and I think i didnt get any questions on histology.
FA and kaplan is not enough cause they have no mention of location of muscles or their relationship.

Thank you.
Even I had used old kaplan lecture notes so I think that doesn't matter.
I liked the way kaplan presents the subject and the questions at the end of it.
I have not read BRS physiology so I cant comment on it but some do consider it better than kaplan.
In short read a book which suits you, both are equally good.
Best of luck for the future.

somewhat more difficult than NBME.
But I think Form 12 was more difficult than the real exam. Their Behavioral and biostats questions are similar to the ones in the exam. rest all is easier.

Thank you so much for posting your experience. Every single piece of advice you have mentioned is helpful to all of us

I just have a question. regarding Microbiology, what area did they heavily test on? was it bacteriology? or virology? did they mention stuffs as detailed as bacterial exotoxins? is kaplan micro a stand-alone book? or do you think FA is more than enough? how many micro questions did u get? was Immunology that hard in the exam? what area did they focus on?

wow, that's more than one question

thank you in advance for your reply. I wish you 99 on your exam. God bless

Thank you.
Regarding microbiology, bacteriology was more asked then virology or parasitology.
Yes they do ask bare facts about bacteria like exotoxin and mechanism of actions but also have questions to identify the gram stained slide or cysts in stool.
the questions usually began with a clinical description then ending with identify the organism which is shown in the exhibit or image.
I had read both kaplan and CMMRS. MRS describes in detail about the clinical presentations but the facts like type of culture used, capsule and virulence factors are not mentioned at all. After reading micro from MRS my micro was very weak scoring only about 60 % of questions right but after I finished Kaplan it jumped to about 90 to 95 %. FA also does a good job in describing those buggers but I still think Kaplan is the best for microbiology and immunology.
I found immuno easy on the exam. frankly I don't remember any immuno questions because they didn't trouble me. Some were really easy (eg cd marker for NK killer cell ).

Thanks a ton ... The Anat info you just gave should help a lot of people ..! Anat is my horror subject and i was under the impression it will not be tested much in the exam . I hope i can do something about it ,in the time i am left with .Roughly how many questions do you think were were anat based. And wish you all the luck for the results . I am sure you will do very good . You did mention receptors are pretty heavily tested . May i know where did you prepare about all the signalling mech and receptors from ? Thanks and be back to tell us your awesome score .

Thank you.
I had almost 3 to 4 questions of anatomy each block and at least one question from gross anatomy each block. I think even if I had done grays anatomy i would not have been able to answers those questions cause I always felt the topics which were asked as less relevant.

regarding the signalling mechanism kaplan is more than enough.

Yes I had done conrad Fischer but only the questions .It did help me a lot in fact I tried to answer every behavioral science question I came across. I even ran a search for behavioral science questions in this forum. But among all, the questions from Kaplan are very similar to those asked in the exam.
Don`t worry after solving a lot of questions you may get a hang of it.
Best of luck.!!

I had done neuroanatomy and histology slides from WEBPATH. really nice website.
Regarding abdominal CT scans I had used google to search for CT scans at different levels but CT scans from Uworld and Qbank should also suffice.

Embarrassed regarding anatomy

i am kinda skipping kaplan for anatomy and focusing on FA and UW....lol how risky could this be?

my exam is on late december and i know that i won't be able to remember anatomy from one read, in addition, i don't have time for full first read
that's why i would love to know ur input about anatomy thanks
